“Meeting an advanced civilisation could be like Native Americans encountering Columbus.”
    -Stephen Hawking

Though I agree with that on the surface, the implication is that the less advanced civilization would be wiped out. Does everyone agree with the possible implication?

    It's one possible outcome, yes.
It's also possible to judge them from our viewpoint, thus humanising them.
As such, I consider we'd be far more enlightened than we'd be today with technology a few hundred years more advanced, so keeping that in mind, they might also seek peace and prosperity with other species, especially if they're explorers and not out looking for materials to scavenge or pets to collect.

Well one would HOPE that any space travelling Alien's would have a lot of planets to harvest for raw materials in the universe; they wouldn't require invading a mostly peaceful populated world...

One would also HOPE they would also not introduce themselves too early; or before the other civilization at least reached a certain technological threshold. Perhaps similar to how the Fed's use Warp Travel as a threshold for first contact; otherwise the technological advances don't matter much.

I'll support the view regardless if they are hundreds or thousands of year's more advanced. One would HOPE any civilization that managed to survive without destroying themselves in the process; would at least be more peaceful and enlightened in the process.

On that note I'd like to think Hawkins is wrong - that any advanced civilization seeks a primary role as invader.

To aliens, whether or not they'll invade a "peaceful" and populated world all depends on their culture. They mind not think we're peaceful or look at us like a virus. They might just look at us and leave haha we see them and everything, but then they go away.

We automatically go to the Prime Directive, but would they? We didn't use the Prime Directive way of thinking with natives around the world until the recent tribes in South America were discovered, so, why would they? They might not see technology as the standard, but whether we are peaceful or warrior-like. Maybe they'll expect us to be more aggressive than we are already.

What if they survived due to brute strength and destruction, weeding out the "weak" by their perspective?

Invader vs peacemakers might not even by our choices. They might just look at us like they're visiting a zoo, maybe less than viruses haha we look at our these aliens will look at us as if we are worthy to be looked at by them.

We think in such human terms; we can't help but do so due to our shared nature. There may even me another perspective we never even considered, yet.
