I got a calendar featuring CGI artwork of Star Trek Ships for Christmas this year. I want to share the images with everyone so I took pictures of the pictures (hopefully no copyright issues with doing that). I won't share the monthly ones until 2018 but there are a few I can share now: the cover image and a technical overview of a starship included within. I'll do my best to keep up with a monthly post of these Ships of the Line.

Originally envisioned to produce a modest 24th century successor to the venerable Excelsior class starship as the cost effective and dependable backbone of starfleet, the Phalanx Class Development Project underwent a dramatic shift after the disastrous Battle of Wolf 359. It became clear that this new design would need to make bold leaps in defensive and propulsion technology for any chance of survival against projected threat forces such as the Dominion and the Borg. A prototype vessel, NX-74998, was rushed into production without delay as a joint venture between Starfleet Tactical, the Starfleet Corps of Engineers,
and the privately operated Magnus Heavy Industries.

The Phalanx class heavy cruiser is a mid-sized armored starship; its primary purpose is to defend Federation diplomatic, stratigic and territorial interests within friendly and known-space operations. Due to its dual worp core design, it is capable of exceptionally high power generation for its size. Unfortunatley this ahs resulted in high fueld consumption rates, thus significantly limiting its operating endurance. Trading range for power and speed, it excels in diplomatic, peacekeeping and humanitarian missions within 1000 light years of Federation space but is somewhat ill suited towards deep space exploratory missions.

The first of three vessels entered service amidst renewed conflict with the Klingon Empire, a second Borg incursion, and ultimately the Dominion War. The starships U.SS. Phalanx, Veracruz, and Repulse served with distinction throughout the period for their rugged durability and fighting prowess despite sustaining critical damage on multiple occasions. Several additional vessels were laid down during the war but construction was slowed by limited wartime resources.

A significant post-war refit of this class greatly improved engine fuel efficiency, extending operating ranges far beyond the frontiers of Federation space.

While the Miranda is a nice little ship, unfortunately, the times that the Federation currently sees itself in is practically forcing the Miranda into retirement.

Point of information: Wasn't the Nebula Class designed to be the Miranda Class replacement? Am I wrong here?

Actually, the Nebula was originally designed to be a recovery vessel for the saucer sections of destroyed Galaxy class ships. However, the design worked so well that Starfleet commissioned the Nebula as it's own class and primary role as a science vessel, though it does have a vast variety of roles too.
