    **MODERATOR NOTICE**
Third party software discussion - consider using at own risk!

    ------

    Good morning all,

Its been a while since I last logged in to play STO, but I thought I'd install it again and get back into the swing of things again. I recently discovered Reshade, an advanced, fully generic post-processing injector for games and video software. Its truly stunning what effects you can re create using the injector from lens flare (If you want ott JJ flares, you can do it), to awesome lighting effects.

There was many rumors going around saying that Reshade could not be used with STO, and I must admit I had a few issues trying to install it in my primary STO file location using ARC. Last night I re installed STO using steam and managed to get Reshade to work using the Live Gamclient (You have to use the Gameclient.exe in the Live folder to install the Reshade effects) and it loads up which was awesome.

My only issue is that when I use the Gameclient to run STO, It wont let me connect to the server (Even without Reshade being installed).

My question to everyone here is, how can I use the Gameclient to launch STO? I know there are command lines you can use -also called arguments I think- to launch the game using the Live Game client?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Many thanks

    Ash

    You want the standalone launcher?

The launcher is HERE (Direct download link). You should be able to install it wherever you want.

NOTE: Will not work on Apple products. Winderz© only.

If you want to know where it is on your computer now… ?

    Try… C:\Program Files (x86)\Star Trek online_en\Star Trek Online\Live\x64\GameClient.exe
    Or… C:\Program Files (x86)\Star Trek online_en\Star Trek Online\Live\x86\GameClient.exe
    Depending on you operating system.
    Or… Search for 'GameClient.exe'

I just installed the standalone launcher and created a shortcut.

HERE are the known command line parameters for your shortcut.

Ok thank you Arimimochi, really appreciate that. So, do I need to uninstall my current steam download of the game and create a fresh instal using the standalone launcher? I've got the Gameclient (x64) to launch using the Reshade tool, but it does not seem to connect to the server. I get to the main STO login menu, but after that it does not connect?

I don't have any experience using it. What I'm relaying is coming from googling and reading. So, with that in mind…

I would install a fresh copy of the standalone launcher, run it, and let it do the massive update that is sure to follow. Then move the files you need to move.

First off, make sure you're putting your files in the Live folder with GameClient.exe, not the main folder with Star Trek Online.exe. Mine is working just fine with reshade using dxgi.dll. Can't get in game to check because of the downtime right now, but I also believe it needs to be in DX9 mode, not DX11.
Unfortunately, DX 11 is the only choice I have in game. My dxgi.dll is not in the live folder. When it asks me to pick a game, should I chose gameclient.exe , in the live folder and not Star Trek Online.exe?
Yes, that should do it. Smile Assuming you use Steam, it should be in this folder "steam\steamapps\common\Star Trek Online\Star Trek Online\Live". The same one as GameClient.exe.
You'll know it's working when you see text in the top left of the screen on the Cryptic logo. Word of advice though, don't alt+tab on that screen. It can cause the game to freeze. Just let it run through till character select and then you're good. Smile
Much of what I have read says that Reshade won't work with DX9E, only with DX9. There seems to be a difference. It also seems to be a hit-or-miss proposition. Some people can get it to work and others just can't. Maybe it's video drivers, maybe it some weird environment variable. But this is probably going to be as far as I can direct you. I would suggest an afternoon reading the Reshade forum.

    Greetings all,

So I thought I'd update this old thread I started way back in January 2018, and now that I've had quite a better understanding of Reshade.
I recently updated my computer and also purchased a ROG Swift 34 inch monitor, and as I was having a clear out of my PC, I decided to re install everything from scratch.

When everything was re installed properly (Windows, graphics drivers etc) I installed Steam on my D drive and after that STO.
As STO was installing I come across some info regarding the new Reshade app which is now 4.2.1 and noticed in the Reshade forums that someone was discussing one of the options for "magic bloom" and that it did not like STO.

The interesting thing was I didnt even get that far originally and couldn't even get reshade to recognise STO, mainly due to the x64 and x86 folder options, so I decided to have another try at trying to get it to work.

Once reshade was downloaded and opened for the first time, it asks what game executable you want to install too. I installed it on both x86 and x64 gameclients. To my surprise, when I booted up sto normally through steam, the options for the Reshade menu appeared, and from there I had a play around with what it had to offer.

Here are a couple of before and after shots of my current reshade settings. I've specifically gone for a Discovery visual aesthetic. The colours have been made more vibrant and I've added a filter called "filmic pass" which makes the image look more TV/Movie accurate. I've also added bloom and ambient light, along with some very subtle lens dirt, which looks very Discovery esque, especially in a space battle.

Im rather impressed with how STO looks now, and I cant seem to go back to default now as It just looks really awesome. Everyone is going to have a preference for sure, but Im really liking the look of the game and how Reshade can really make everything pop. I cant really recommend it enough and providing you have a decent PC, It's definitely worth it.

I've saved my Discovery SFX file, so if anyone who has Reshade installed and wants to try out my preset, please feel free to let me know.

Is there a major difference between Nvidia Ansel and Reshade?

I've tried to install Reshade in the past but it didn't work - so I'm not particularly interested to invest time in it again.

Yes, there is a considerable different in terms of the options that are available. You would definitely notice the difference. If you have a look at the 4th screenshot, you will see lens dirt on the lower left of the screen. It's also light dependant, and will show up when ever their is a decent light source which is pretty cool.

It never did work for me originally either, until I installed it the way I mentioned above. Works a treat now, and was so simple to set up. The only thing that I did differently when installing this time was installing STO on Steam on my D drive and not my C drive. I also tried to install Reshade last time when I had ARC to open STO, and could never get it to work, so maybe it is down to where STO is installed and what you use to run it.

The oversaturation of color looks really bad.

Also keep in mind when tampering with these settings... You might fick up your client's files until you'll be forced to clean reinstall and revert to base driver settings.

STO runs on a ten year old exclusive engine. Keep that in mind.

There could be some serious bugs that occur outside of the guaranteed scope due to any modding, so be reserved and aware when using any of these tweaks for a little more color saturation.
Truth is uncomfortable most of the times. That's why you gotta face it every time.

Each to their own I guess, but personally I don't think it's over saturated at all. When on ground on ESD, it looks pretty decent. I think it was just on Kobali that looks a bit ott. I've included an image with the same settings on ESD and as you can see, it's not over saturated, so I definitely think its the lighting on Kobali.

STO has had at least 3 patches since I've been using reshade and still no issues. Same goes for the Nvidea game filters.

Also keep in mind that we are part of the same fleet. Your entitled to your own opinion of course, but I do believe you come over a little harsh in your comment. I would also point out that you dont -in anyway- need to alter any ingame files that relate to STO. Infact all you do is install a path for the reshade folder using the gameclient.exe. It then reads the information it requires from that folder, that's it, and all the settings are done within reshade when STO launches.

Interpretation of voice tone in written text is a difficult one.

I think it is a fair warning, since most game tweaks tend to break certain things.

If this tweaking is arc/steam proof and does not alterate the basic state of gamefiles, that's great, but someone has to raise this flag since some pc configurations may suffer performance loss or other unpleasant experiences.

If the settings are done when STO launches, its a render/output thing, but messing settings up can lead to crashes (if you don't know what I mean, you haven't played STO for long enough yet Smile ).

Even now, this game has some random map-to-map crashes. No need to get defensive over a generic friendly warning.

In this particular case, I don’t think casualsto intended to come across as telling you off.

It’s a fair concern, since STO and Cryptic’s terms and regulations are infact against third party software. Games like WoW allow mods and multiboxing, but some game producers don't. Cryptics one of them and have banned accounts for multiboxing.

I think a 'use at your own risk' warning seems valid here. Trust me, you don't want to be accountable for anyone getting their hundreds of $$$ worth invested accounts banned because of this thread. On the same note, I was also trying reshade on my own risk - but I don't recommend it. I will be putting a moderator notice on the first page just as a fair warning.

I must admit though, amazing game and screens! I also look forward to more screens of particularly you in battle and compare them with my Nvidia Ansel filters.

Yes, true. And thanks for changing the topic to warn of 3rd party software. I didn't think of that. Apologies Casualsto, and yes. Writing tone is very difficult indeed, and sorry for snapping.

I shall try and upload a few to show it off for sure Mack. As far as I'm aware, Reshade works as a filter over the game similar to the Nvidea filters. The only difference is the amount of options it gives you. I shall investigate further into the application to get a better understanding of how it works for sure.

Again, thanks for the heads up to you both.

I think the nvidia built-in services and/or presets should be safe, at the sole risk of turning into a performance edge case for the game and resulting into a crash.

    The safe, the better.

On the other hand, STO has a crappy performance-aspect optimization ratio.

You need a strong CPU and a decent GPU to make the game look really good (based on its engine limitations ofc).

Tweaking just on the color presets ain't gonna do much for the overall visual experience since the real two factors here are lighting and edges (polygons and lack of jagged edges).

If you're truly looking to squeeze out most of STO visually, hit all the sliders right and run it on your full screen with the native resolution. It looks really impressive without causing any risks.

So, its been a while since I posted on this topic and I thought I'd share a little update on the Reshade in STO subject.
I asked a question on twitter to Al Rivera and Thomas Marronie about using reshade with Star Trek Online and if it was considered ban-able.

To be honest I wasn't expecting a reply, but I actually got a a fair few and even one from Al asking to see screenshots. Both Thomas and Al confirmed that using Reshade in STO is not "banable" and that it does not alter the gameclient.exe in any way, it just creates a profile/preset using the gameclient.

They were both impressed by my screeshots of some of the effects you can have using Reshade, so hopefully I can start posting more on here to show off how it can improve the visual fidelity of the game. Im currently testing out the new Ray Tracing feature on STO and its pretty amazing how much the lighting effects can be improved with real time ray tracing elements, especially on interiors.

Anyhow, just thought I'd let anyone who is interested in using this application with Star Trek Online, that you should be ok to use it and not worry about being banned. Smile
