Will star-fleet become a reality? President Donald J. Trump told press on Tuesday that a US-run 'Space Force' would be in the works. He specifically stated that "Space is a war-fighting domain, just like the land, air and sea; We have the air force. We will have a space force…We will call it the 'space force.'".

What are your thoughts? How do you think it'd be structured? Would the USAF have control over it? Would NASA? or would it be a joint command? Maybe it's OWN command?

    He's an idiot.

He's looking up at space with the same idiotic, arrogant attitude his kind have done so for too long. Space is not there to be weaponized and exploited, it should be getting explored for the betterment of ALL humanity.
His ridiculous attitude of having a "US-only" space club or whatever he's raving about will only do harm.

It's the people like SpaceX, Jeff Bezos, Virgin Galactic etc who we should be looking to lead us into space, not ancient dinosaurs like Trump and his cronies in the "old guard". We don't want another cold war but in space, we want the attitude to be one of discovery and excitement as we expand our horizons.

Come to think of it, why hasn't SpaceX gotten involved with this conversation. Or am I too modest to think Trump's advisers haven't already called them up and asked "Is this possible on your end?" Remember Space X is primarily run in the US, especially now that it shares joint custodial management authority over DoD projects in more than 60 percent of the USAF Space Command's budget.

SpaceX, or more specifically Elon Musk has one clear objective - Mars.

I strongly suspect all this DoD work they do is just a means to an end, it pays really well and it is high demand work so they can push their limits and have plenty of opportunity to test/improve designs. Their end goal is a working an cost effective interplanetary rocket system, something that will help humanity in the long run.

That is rich, considering Trump's cut NASA's budget to the lowest in decades and stated intentions to basically hand off development to private corporations. Actions speak louder than words, and he'd bring us closer to a private space mercenary company than a US space force.

Obama actually seemed to care and/or be interested, which is why he's noted as having "offered more specifics about his plans for NASA than any U.S. presidential candidate in history".

The problem with Trump is that unlike every previous president who may or may not have bothered with NASA, he's actively selling out to corporate interests. Which is unsurprising and in line with most of what he's done. I'm under the impression he's put more lobbyists in charge of the very agencies that are supposed to regulate the industries the lobbyists are from, than any previous administration. Actually I don't think any previous administration has ever done that because nobody else has ever gotten as much of a pass for this sort of misbehavior before.

Trump's actions with regards to all this actually threatens the private companies currently doing it, most of them rely on government contracts on funding. They're private sector, but part of the government budget - the portion Trump is cutting.

I think it's a terrible idea, while weaponising space will cause an arms race between nations and possibly speed up space travel, the people who will lose out are the common folk who will be caught up in war. As much as I think space exploration should be funded by the state, it shouldn't become a battleground, we have enough of those.

Proposed by a hard right representative that also wanted to make mocking the TSA illegal and for the US to withdraw from the UN...And opposed by Trump's own Secretary of Defense

Bringing it up is pretty clearly a Trump stunt to try and distract from his historically low approval ratings, legislative failures, and chaotic White House in the face of midterm elections that look more and more grim for his party every week.

Eh.. Isn't this in violation of the Outer Space Treaty created by the United Nations?

"Outer Space Treaty: The foundation of international space law, it forbids weapons of mass destruction in space and reserves the moon and other bodies for peaceful purposes. It opened for signature in January 1967 and entered into force on Oct. 10, 1967."

I think personally the UN should be the only ones who do space fleets like Halo? UNSC, United Nations Space Command! Least that way it represents the good of all people and not small minded interests.

I think personally the UN should be the only ones who do space fleets like Halo? UNSC, United Nations Space Command! Least that way it represents the good of all people and not small minded interests.
Avenger, you're probably right. Granted the USAF already operates a "Space Command" of it's own in conjunction with NASA, it's still better to see a unified and nonpartisan front for this type of endeavor.

It definitely is, but a country can always break a treaty. I don't think Trump's current statement actually makes it official. But, if it is true, he wouldn't be allowed to put nukes or anything up there without someone in his OWN administration calling him out. We'd know for sure.
