Graphics card opinions

Well, my old 780TI is toast, to the point my rig won’t even start up now when it tries to load the desktop, so it’s time for some new hardware.

I’m looking at the 1070 and 1080 cards as when push comes to shove, there isn’t a huge difference in the prices between them currently. The current front runner is the Gigabyte GTX1080 Windforce 8GB so I’m looking for a few opinions. The cost of the 1080TI rules it out from the start.

I’m not set on the 1080, if there’s someone who has experience of the 1070 and it comes recommended, I’ll take a look at those too.

I run a 1060 6GB, and it runs everything on High as it is. Please note, I don't stream so just playing games - this card is great. I assume 1070 would be better in performance hence.

In the PC of my Grandmother I am running a 1060 6GB as well it is more than enough for STO.

While the 1070 TI Founders Edition cooling is not the best the price is still normal at €469,00.

I have a GTX1070 (Thats the exact card I have... curse those crypto-currency price hikes... I paid $450CDN for it) and it runs pretty much everything I throw at it on Very High or Ultra at 60+ FPS. I don't know what the max is for my card as I only have a 60hz monitor, but since it caps out at 60FPS for whatever game I throw at it, I'm sure its more than 60FPS. A 1070 is a good place for decent performance.

A 1060 a good place for performance but with a smaller budget, it'll run most games at High to Very High at respectable framerates.

My laptop has a desktop-grade 2gb 1050. It can play Destiny 2 on High @ 60FPS, and the 1050TI is known to be a good card for budget systems.

I don't know anything about the newer AMD cards as I switch to Team Green when I upgraded last year, and the last AMD card I owned was an R9 390.

1070 is probably a good choice, it'll keep you going for a while!

I'm currently running the GTX 1080 w/ 8 GB (Dual) graphics and at all max settings, STO runs extremely smooth even in the most dense or heavy SFX situations.

At times, it can be bad... in the sense you easily see the effort devs put into things. i.e. low poly things (like uniform textures) vs. high poly things. It's bad as it is just more apparent. Like "why don't they fix that texture?" etc.

The 1080 is definitely pricey... but for me graphics are kind of important. A 1070, for gaming and regular use, is more than enough for today and a time.

Remember a 750 does not require that much of a beefy power supply.

Anything above a 1060 will require a better power supply, and a power supply with PCI power connectors.

My pc (i5 7600K OC'd, 32g DDR4, z270 MoBo, 1070 Dual 8gb) only needs a 450w PSU, But a 550w would be recommended (I currently have an 850w, but I had dual R9 390s and needed the head room.)

Every card I've owned since 2009 that wasn't a budget card has needed some firm of power connection, and all PSU that are 80+ certified have some form of GPU connectors (4, 6, or 8 pin,)

AFAIK, The 780 needed an 8 and 6pin power connections.

The power supply is covered, I’ve got a 1000w unit that I kept from the old rig (though I have considered replacing it due to the age with something in the 750 range) which has the PCI connectors.

The 1070 is starting to look like a better option. I’ve found another card, the Gigabyte REV2.01070 G1 which will drive the costs down, it’s Just a lot of places seem to be out of stock currently.

You can thank gold mining for stock things, there's no graphics card available in Norway at the time being.

Heck, when I ordered my new Dell.. It was on hold for 2 months because Dell could not supply a GTX 1070.......

Eventually after enough complaining and threatning to buy an HP they sent me a model from the US which had a GTX 1070 ^^ It has a 480 Watt PSU or something like that.

The Dell's have a MSI Aero without the branding, a standard 1070 with reference cooling.

When I had a custom gaming rig, I had the Founders Edition.

I always liked the blower coolers, unlike other cards who just expell heat inside the case. But I assume you got good ventilation and stuff in the case?

Speaking as a gamer, I can't wait until the cryptocurrency bubble bursts and stabilizes. People taking all our dang GPUs.

I’ve kept my case since about 2009, the CoolerMaster Cosmos S. That beast has a ton of space in it and I’ve got 7 fans (3 intake, 4 exhaust) so it generally doesn’t have much issue with the airflow. The only real issue it has is that 2 of the built in USB ports are slightly bent as I caught my headphone wire on the chair a number of years ago.

STO doesn't require a lot. I can still play at all maxed out settings on my almost 10 year old backup rig, an old Dell Studio XPS 9000 with a 1st generation Intel Core I7, the I7 975 XE. I put an EVGA SSC GeForce GTX1060 6GB in it when my old AMD Radion 5780HD died. Even with the old computer, the 1060 6GB is more than enough for STO maxed out. If you want to save some money, you can go that route. Anything above that, you can count towards future proofing!

Cheers for the feedback everyone, I got something sorted out today after a bit more research.

I’ve ordered the Gigabyte GTX 1080 G1 8G - the Amazon vouchers I got for my B-day have got the cost down to just under £400, so I decided I may as well plump for the 1080 as there’s not a huge difference in the costs either way, at least for the 1070 models that are in stock. This should keep me going for a few more years hopefully!
