I don't mean to start a flame war here or anything but your attitude is about the most infuriating thing about some Trek fans these days. People seem to get so hung up on Discovery simply because it is new and different that they are willing to spout all manner of statements in an effort to appear the most disgusted fan.
Face it, Discovery is made by the guys who own the rights to Star Trek, it is therefore canon because they say it is; whether people like it or not. You can dislike it all you want but to go about making spurious claims about canonical nature of shows etc is just ridiculous. In fact the current storm from some players regarding the upcoming content makes me embarrassed to be part of the same fandom! For a saga which celebrates exploring new idea and the whole IDIC business the reaction of some fans is truly mind boggling, no wonder Trekkies always get funny looks from the rest of society!

As to the content itself, i;m looking forward to it. Discovery is enjoyable to me and i really like the visual style of the show, the ships, uniforms, effects etc. It's not doing anything other Trek never did previously, pushing boundaries and following current political trends in a sci-fi flavour. Plus its nice to see something Trek get a chance at a big budget, well filmed and stylish show without being stuck up it's own arse and hard to accept for the wider public like some previous renditions were.
Also, something that i think is really important to the health of the game is that this will mean STO is being developed along side a currently airing Trek show for the first time, which means both more access to what CBS is creating for the show and potentially more new players if the show gets people interested. Massive potential for cross-media promotion here. More new players = fresh cash being spent and therefore more money to further develop the game.

The definition of what's canon in star trek is what's seen on TV or movies produced by CBS or Paramount. You can have your opinion, but that's all it is, an opinion. STDISCO is canon, you just have to deal with it.

You're more than welcome to do that, just don't expect a lot of us (I would fathom a vast majority of us, actually) to boycott it with you. You're free to your opinion, to voice your opinion, and even free to act on your opinion (so long as you don't harm yourself or others).

Just so long as you remember, that it's just that, An Opinion, not Fact. I already stated what is fact in this case: Discovery is Canon, whether you like it or not, because CBS/Paramount said it is canon. That is LITERALLY the definition of what is canon when it comes to Star Trek.

A lot of us are part of this community because of STO, it's why I joined actually, and some of us are heavy Min-Max Best-In-Slot MAX DEEPS players. Some of the best weapons in STO right now are the {WHAT EVER}-Linked weapons which come from the Discovery Lock Box, so... You get where I'm going with this. With the new expansion coming out, you can expect that the newest and greatest gear and content to be, at least tangentally, related to Discovery, and if you want to participate in the end game, that means running the new content. If you want to boycott, go right a head, you'll be missing out and quite frankly wasting your time, because it won't make a lick of difference.

I'm truly sorry you and others feel the way you do about the franchise holding true to it's greatest standard..."To boldly go where no one has gone before". But, that is what it's going to do. Some must be left behind to make room for others. I'm sure that fans of the original series felt the same way about TNG, then those about DS9, Voyager, and Enterprise.

There are simply some who cannot open their minds to change even though it is enviable, because without it, we as a society become staginate. Those that chose to boycott will be missed and as far as I'm concerned pitied because they will miss out on all of the great things to come, not just in the game but probably anything new in life itself. Maybe later on you might give it a chance, I hope that you do. If you don't that's fine too, your opinion will be respected. Just do remember to reciprocate the same.

I mean, you do you, but a boycott isn't going to do much, and STO isn't really canon anyway, they are mixing JJ Trek ships into its universe and everything, so it doesn't really make a difference to me.

To be fair, I don't really consider STO to be canon or very 'trekky'...I still play it once in a while though

At a push and with much pain am willing to try and accept it for Trek. That being said I can not and will never accept it as before TOS and then to TNG/DS9 & Voyager finishing up with the last movie back in 2002. Again that being said I see it as its own timeline an alternate reality because that is what it is at the end of the the day the 2009 Movie stated as much with the story.

Discovery is shall we say different and there are a few grey areas that am sure Roddenberry is turning in his grave for but am sure we can all appreciate creative licence and thats what they did make something different with a new twist.

But am in the same boat as much of the others not a fan of it dont like it. Its not my type of Trek that raised most of us through out the many years. Still find myself enjoying Orville due to it being as close to TNG as we are going to get.

It doesn't have the same feel to it that all of the other series have. They focusd on exploration and self discovery. Even DS9, which had a war going on during its later seasons, still had a focus on the characters and their growth. This one is waaay to focused on drama.

If you don't want to play STO now because they're releasing new content based on a series a lot of people disapprove of; fine. Me? I'm still playing STO because no matter how much I shake my head at its flaws, I'm still there because I love Star Trek. I've played ever since the game was free to play, getting a lifetime subscription later. There is plenty of content still in the game you can do without needing to touch the Discovery content.

By the way; If you were serious about quitting Star Trek because of Discovery, you would've quit when the Discovery Lockbox was announced 6 months ago.

This is where i don't agree with people at all. You can dislike it all you want but to make such vast judgement of whether ST.D has character development and all the various things we list from the past series when ST.D has HAD ONLY ONE SEASON OF 15 EPISODES is simply ridiculous.
Really ST.D has barely started telling it's story and we don't really know the characters much more than the basic introductions and rough outlines from season 1. The same for the in-universe background such as the way the Federation works around this period, and how other races act; we've simply seen too little to make any fair judgement as of yet i feel.
I think there's nothing wrong with disliking the show for the visual looks, or a variety of other reasons but i think it has to be given the chance to show it's true colours before we make claims of it not following the path other series' did. Remember every other Trek series had a pretty shaky start but often became exceptional TV in later seasons.
I think we should at least give the show a decent chance.
