Captain Teriir gave a small, humurous grin at Lieutenant Jr. Gd. Jenha Vars' flustering. Following the Dominion War, Starfleet Tactical created a new subdivision within itself for people who were to serve as Outfitters. These officers were initially perceived as officers who would ensure all non-weapon equipment would be prepared for combat teams beaming down to the surface of a planet or aboard a ship. This role quickly extended to assisting away teams as a whole, providing everything from tricorders to space suits. When not assisting away teams, they were often found running around the ship in a similar fashion to the Yeomen from the 23rd Century, serving as messengers and provision providers for the duty crew. As one of those Outfitters, Vars was panicking, believing she was late to hand out some tricorders and a triage kit she'd brought with her on a hover cart. He reached out to clutch her shoulder in a reassuring manner, "Easy, Ms. Vars. We got here early and not everyone on the away team is here yet."

"Oh, well, why didn't you say so?" She commented before pushing her cart aside so she was no longer blocking the door.

Although he wouldn't need one, he picked up one of the tricorders from her cart. As he put it into a holster he also took, she went over to where Lieutenant Storm had set his sword down and picked it up for safekeeping until its owner returned. He stepped back so Lieutenant Locke, who'd forgotten to get a tricorder earlier, could get one too. Since weapons were always potentially needed elsewhere, these were left in lockers spread around the ship or in the armory. Having previously served with Outfitters on the Icarus, where many Outfitters were on trial runs, Teriir found it was more efficient for away teams to have their equipment brought to them at the transporter room or shuttle bay. They just had to collect their things instead of waiting for one of away team members to run around and find everything they needed. He noticed Lieutenant Storm looking at him quizzically nearby.
Max got up and paced a bit back & forth. He wanted to ask a question of the captain, without sounding brash. He stopped, leaned against a wall and asked,
    - When granda-uh...Admiral Storm gave me my assignment, he never said anything about the broader mission of the Ares. If I may ask, what is our mission...beyond this check-in?
"I believe the best way I can describe our overall mission is to repeat the Captain's Oath I took a short while ago," Teriir replied thoughtfully, "'Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Ares. The beginning of her ongoing mission: to explore strange new worlds. To seek out new life and new civilizations. To boldly go where no one has gone before.' We'll be heading into unexplored territory soon and begin one of Starfleet's first exploration missions since the Dominion War."
    Max smiled and said,
    - Gramps knows how to pick 'em.
"I take it Admiral Storm is a relative of yours?" The Captain observed.
    - Mark Storm, Fleet coordination office. Been in Starfleet for.....God, almost 55 years, I'd guess. He was the one that sponsored my entry to the Academy. My father was completely against me going into the service, but Gramps told him on multiple occasions to back off. Part of the reason why mum divorced him. He can be extremely push at times. There were times when I was in the Academy that I was pulled into the Dean's office & I thought Dad's ship was destroyed, only to find out that there was phantom Reprimands on my school record. I know of two that I DEFINITELY DESERVED, but the others I figured that dad got into the ear of my instructors. Dad got found out just five months from my graduation. He was suspended, then shifted to a new command that put him in the service of outpost 225. Well far & away from earth. Thank God for that!
"Huh," Teriir huffed slightly, thinking fast on what to say, "You sound pleased that your father is no longer in your life."
    - I love him. I mean, he's my dad, but I'm glad he's well away from me now that I'm in full service. He always seems to try to sabotage my career at every step.
Nodding, Teriir looked away, keeping his thoughts on the subject to himself now. Every time he heard a story about someone disproving of someone joining Starfleet, he couldn't help but see a ghostly bottle of Aldeberan Whiskey; He had one hurled at him by his father when he declared he would be leaving home to enlist at Starfleet Academy.

Max started to fiddle with his bionic arm while the team were waiting for the remaining members. Clicking one of the switches to activate an actuator in the arm. It tensed up, then relaxed.

((TAG Terrir - asking about the functions of my arm))

    Max smiled, then said,
    - You remember that one android officer, Data, right?

    ((TAG Terrir))

    - Well, its sorta like that, but with more functionality. Has anyone here heard of an old earth cartoon, Inspector gadget? Its along those lines, but not as ridiculous. The first function is one I requested is a sharpening belt for honing the edges of any of my swords I have.

Max proceeds to unlatch a small panel on his palm that spans the entire length of the hand, then closed it.

    - The second function is the reason why I never carry a phaser anywhere.

He shows the away team the unusually coloured fingernail on the index finger.

    - Equivalent of a type IX phaser. I've only used it in target practice since I got the arm. The third function is that I can use the arm as a tricorder. Dead useful in some spots. Also there's the transponders, which you have one of them, sir. The last function is a shock grip. I can charge my hand with about two hundred volts of electricity & can drop most humanoid species with a simple touch.

Max thought for a moment, then said,
    - Starfleet R & D. They were looking to scratch an itch to try something cool from their minds. They approached me with this bionic arm idea & I accepted.

"My father, Lieutenant Commander Lee Hood, graduated from the Academy with Data in 2345," Hood began. "They had a probability mechanics class together. My mother was friends with Data's daughter's teacher, Lieutenant Ballard. Ballard talked to my mother about having Lal, Data's daughter, another Soong-type android, in class. I didn't find out what happened to Lal until I was older; I was only ten at the time. Data's death hit my father pretty hard."

A’Mand listened intently to the discussion from outside the transporter room. Not meaning to make the room more crowded than it was the cart pushed by Vars certainly made space a commodity. She was curious about the non-standard weaponry initially selected by certain officers and decided to research details another time.

It wasn’t until Max Storm commented on his bionic arm that A’Mand entered to see for herself. Curiosity about relatively exotic weapons was one thing, but a truly rare piece of equipment was something to see.

Max started to fiddle with his bionic arm while the team were waiting for the remaining members. Clicking one of the switches to activate an actuator in the arm. It tensed up, then relaxed.

A’Mand stood fixed to the “gadget” as it revealed some secrets. After the demonstration, A’Mand looked to Teriir. “Pardon my tardiness, Captain.”

She reached into the cart to retrieve a tricorder. Fixing it to her waist, she asked, “If you don’t mind Mr. Storm, how is it R&D selected you to receive the arm?”

Max rubbed his arm and said, plainly:

    - I honestly have no clue. Gramps-uh, I mean, Adm. Storm's been asking about for the better part of two years. My idea is they had something they were itching to do for some time, after seeing Data, of course, saw me after my arm was lopped off.

    He sighed and said,

Captain Teriir was brought out of his recollections by the sound of a series of servos tensing together. Looking around, he realized the noise was coming from Lieutenant Storm's arm when he grabbed a hold of it. He tilted his head in curiosity, "Is that a robotic arm?"
    Max smiled, then said,
    - You remember that one android officer, Data, right?
"Yes, I had a chance to meet him and the rest of the Enterprise's Senior Staff when the ship visited several key Federation worlds during the victory celebrations following the Dominion War. My ship had the pleasure of providing an honorary escort for them during their trip to Betazed," Teriir smiled at the memory of briefly serving directly alongside the Enterprise. A posting aboard that ship was considered to be the highest unofficial honor in the entire fleet. He glanced over at Lieutenant Hood, who spoke up as well.

Getting himself back on track after thinking about the Enterprise, he turned his full attention to the arm, pointing to it while speaking, "Is your arm similar to those Data had?"

The Captain had seen a lot of prototypes over the course of his relatively short but very active career. He had never seen anything quite like this though, "How were you able to get your arm?"
Max thought for a moment, then said,
    - Starfleet R & D. They were looking to scratch an itch to try something cool from their minds. They approached me with this bionic arm idea & I accepted.
Making sure to take note of the correct term to describe it, Teriir was about to ask how he'd been selected to receive the bionic arm when a woman's voice behind him made him jump. He'd been so drawn into the gadgets that he hadn't heard the ship's Councilor had joined them.
A’Mand stood fixed to the “gadget” as it revealed some secrets. After the demonstration, A’Mand looked to Teriir. “Pardon my tardiness, Captain.”
Turning around, and doing his best to hid his embarrassment, he replied, "That is quite alright, Councilor. We're still gathering everyone up for the away team."

Letting her pass so she could get to the cart with supplies, he faced an open wall console. He needed to start thinking about the upcoming meeting with Gul Enok. There was a lot the two of them were going to be talking about, both on the current mission and on the War. Unfortunately, he didn't know anything about the Cardassian beyond his military service, so anything not related to the Dominion War would be alien to him.

"Perhaps the Diplomacy Officer could shed some insight on that," he whispered to himself. He gave Lieutenant Locke a subtle nod to motion him closer. Once they were within a whispered earshot, he continued, "Could you inform our Diplomatic Officer, Urquhart, that we need some help on the background of the people we are meeting with? Although we know the situation going on down below, there isn't much on specifics with the people we're talking to. Perhaps he'll have more information on that."

"Want him to come with us?" Locke murmured back.

Teriir shook his head in response, "I think it would be better that he have time to gather information before reviewing it with us. Who knows, maybe he'll find something that will make everything . . . easier, on all of us."

The Security Officer flicked his eyes dismissively at the last comment, "Nothing's ever easy."

"The Lakota was at Tyra and the Keres destroyed Gul Enok's newly commissioned flagship at Regulak."

"Oh," Locke understood what the Captain was getting at now, "I'll let him know right away but I have a feeling he's been doing a lot of it already. This may be just an update to him."

Christopher walked into the transporter room with a substantial medical kit strapped across his back. He reached into the cart and selected a hand phaser, applying the holster to his uniform. Finally satisfied that he was equipped correctly, Christopher turned to the assembled officers who were clearly not expecting him. Facing Teriir, he finally spoke up, "Doctor Hems sends his compliments sir but regrets that he's busy with a patient and couldn't leave surgery. He asked me to cover the initial planetary medical duties until he's free to transport down to the planet's surface."

OOC: Pardon the intrusion into the away team but I thought that we could use Christopher as a doctor until KaiserKirk/Hems gets back, Chris is a trauma doctor so may come in handy. Silynn and I have a JP planned for later on in the mission so Christopher is at a loose end anyway.

"I saw schematics of something similar while with the Starfleet Scientific Corps, but, nothing like this," Hood said. The Corps took him everywhere, from his own backyard in Caloosahatchee, Florida to the Gaia System's uninhabited fourth planet, located in the Gamma Quadrant.

Though he took some courses in biomimetics at the Academy, Hood felt he barely scratched the surface; all the recent advancements, especially since the death of Data.

Due to his degree in Astrophysics, with focus on Temporal, Quantum, Relativistic Mechanics, and Warp Field Theory, he did not have much experience with biomimetics. He recalled lessons about the Automated Personnel Units, the Exo III androids, the Flint- and Sargon-types, and, of course, the infamous criminal Harcourt Fenton "Harry" Mudd's androids.

Hood brought out his tricorder, but, stopped himself before opening it. "Do you mind?"

Rosek stepped into the transporter room and looked around at the assembled officers.

“Ah Dyrell, I was hoping to catch you before you left the ship. I have had my staff preparing the replicatores for transport. We should be ready to beam them down once you have verified the transport coordinates.”

Noticing the Tactical officer Rosek continued.

“That reminds me, boss, as soon as you are back we can see about an escort for the prospecting and mining shuttles to acquire some raw materials form these asteroids. I’m hesitant to send out mining ships with the possibility of these raiders returning.”

    Max’s arm caught Rosek’s eye.

“That is a beautiful piece of engineering Lieutenant.”

    [AS LOCKE]

As the Security Officer headed over to the wall console to activate the intercom, he noticed two other officers enter and start speaking to Captain Teriir. The one in blue carried a backpack which Locke knew contained a field triage kit while he guessed the other officer was an engineer from his appearance. He couldn't help but shake his head as the engineer, he believed his name was Rosek, started to ogle at Lietenant Storm's bionic arm. Hood had a tricorder out and was preparing to take some scans.

"Ugh, Why do scientists and engineers start projects at bad times?" he grunted as he started pressing buttons on the intercom. He got an answer a moment later.
    - Sam here, what you got for me?
"This is Lieutenant Locke down in Transporter Room 1. The Captain says he'd like you to get started in digging up some information."
    - That's what I'm here for. What information am I searching up?
"Any information you have on Dorvan V following it's withdrawal from Federation control and also the Cardassian's involvement here would be greatly appreciated. Also, much is known about the Cardassian Advisor here due to his military history; Gul Enok. We need to know more about him beyond his military victories and involvement in both the Border Wars and the Dominion War."
    Sam's eyes widened and said
    - Shouldn't be too difficult to find, I hope. I'll get right on it.
"Thank you. Transporter Room 1 out," Locke signed off on the intercom and looked back at the other officers who'd joined them. The Chief Engineer had filled the Captain in on the industrial replicators and also the need for security for people who were to be gathering the raw materials for his projects. The medical officer, Christopher Cushings, was talking to the Captain.
Facing Teriir, he finally spoke up, "Doctor Hems sends his compliments sir but regrets that he's busy with a patient and couldn't leave surgery. He asked me to cover the initial planetary medical duties until he's free to transport down to the planet's surface."
The Captain looked at nothing, a habit Locke had gotten used to observing from Teriir. It was his way of sorting through new information with what he already knew. He commented just loudly enough for him to hear, "He must be treating that Joel Churchill for Singultus this time."

The transporter officer on duty suddenly chimed in, "Apologies, Captain, but the Bridge is saying they're receiving a subspace communique from Earth from a Admiral Storm."

"That's . . . strange," Teriir remarked and looked over to Lieutenant Storm, "Lieutenant?"
    - Its likely for me, I think. Not unlike him to check in once & a bit.

He turned to the chief and says,
    - Send to the Admiral that I can't talk right now & explain why. Include ships status in the message.
The chief nodded but froze when the Captain spoke up again, "Hold. Please inform the Admiral that the Senior Officers are unavailable at this time as we are currently in conference with the Cardassians on Dorvan V."

"S-Sir," the Transporter Chief hesitated in surprise, "You haven't even beamed down yet!"

"Have we?" the Captain inquired as he moved over to the transporter pad. Locke grinned in amusement. He knew Teriir well enough to know this was his way to both get people back on track with missions and also put off speaking with bureaucracy. He moved over and stood on a section adjacent to the Captain on the transporter pad, placing one hand on his phaser holster while doing so. Although he wouldn't use it unless necessary, it was part of the training to be ready for anything. He took a breath and waited for everyone else to join them.

    "Energize."

Max stepped up onto the pad, then adjusted a servo switch on the bionic arm. A voice came from the arm, saying,
    - Tricorder systems set for voice activation.
He nodded, then looked at the chief and said,
    - Watch my blade, please.
Max gave a sly wink at the chief as he felt the transporter systems dematerialize him & his crewmates down to Dorvan V.

Once they materialized, Max took a slow, pacing walk around the away team. Making visual notes of their surroundings. After he did this, Max stood at the side of the captain and said,
    - Area looks clear, sir. The people of this colony don't seem worse for wear.

Max nodded his head and said,
    - Aye, sir.

A’Mand quickly pulled out her tricorder and activated it. She turned to encompass the team and scanned each of them to quietly “read” their physiological condition, looking for higher-than-expected adrenaline levels. She made sure to include herself. Fear of the unknown is always a condition in almost every race within the Federation, yet elevated beyond a certain threshold suggests fight-or-flight symptoms which may be at the cusp of speech patterns and initial decisions. Having not worked with the Away Team before, it was prudent to own a objective consideration of the team.

The preliminary results did not pique A’Mand’s interest. Tactical members were naturally more inclined to be more alert than others, but the professionalism each officer already imbued was obvious. She closed the tricorder but kept it in her hand for quick access.

Hood brought out his tricorder, but, stopped himself before opening it. "Do you mind?"
Max held out his arm and said,
    - Go for it.
Hood raised and unfolded his TR-590 Mark XI, activating the tricorder. He had a hard time moving on to the new PADD-like tricorders Starfleet introduced a couple years prior; the large touchscreen interface just did not feel right to him.

Slowly scanning down Storm’s bionic arm, Hood initiated different scans, logging everything for future reference.
“Ugh, why do scientists and engineers start projects at bad times?” he grunted as he started pressing buttons on the intercom.
“Mr. Locke,” Hood began without looking up from his tricorder, with the slightest of edges to his voice, “you’re confusing a scientific observation with a project based on the scientific method. With a project, I’d have to perform some experiment, testing his arm in some way, and not rely on observations alone. In this quick scan, I’m simply making an observation and arriving at a conclusion based on the empirical evidence provided, without a need for independent/dependent variables or control/experimental groups, as a scientific project would entail.”

“Your arm appears to consist of tripolymer composites and molybdenum-cobalt alloys,” Hood interpreted from his readings. “The polyalloys, along with the cortenide and duranium casing, gives your arm the ability to withstand extreme stress. The interlink sequencers bridge your nerve endings to your arm, allowing an asynchronous mode of operation. There doesn’t appear to be much space between the positronic links and the sequencers. There’s virtually no delay between your brain’s instructions to your arm, or its accessories, as if it was flesh and bone.

“I’m detecting a circulatory system, producing biochemical lubricants and a micro-hydraulic power regulator. This must serve to maintain thermal control of the internal systems so they don’t overheat? Probably due to the biochemicals used, the casing seems to be resistant to disease and radiation.”
