Stargate is my second most favourite sci-fi series, and you're not seeing things, there are quite a few who have played characters on both series, with obvious ones being John DeLancie, Robert Picardo, and Connor Trinneer having the bigger roles.

They even reference Star Trek quite a few times, and outright parody it in the 200th episode of SG1.

He makes the show. Basically stopped watching once Richard Dean Anderson wasn't the lead anymore.

Only watched the first half dozen episodes of SGU, but it was soap opera garbage with insufficient O'Neill.

yeah, I think that SGU tried to go too dark and gritty and didn't have enough levity. Hell, barely any of the service personnel used gallows humour, something that was prevalent when I served. It was as if the writers had read too many Warhammer 40k novels and said, "What SGU needs is more grim dark!"

Indeed the humor made both SG-1 and Atlantis great and fun to watch, I wish Atlantis would have gotten two more Seasons or at least the TV-Movie.

Not ashamed to admit that a couple of the Atlantis episodes have left me misty eyed.

The one where Doc Beckett gets blown up was especially touching as it was so sudden and unexpected. Couple this with the death in SG1 of doctor Frasier's (again, so unexpected) makes me think that the SG writing team have something against doctors.

Now this episode actually made me cry. The one where after using a piece of alien technology, Rodney starts to lose his intelligence. It was beautifully acted by David Hewlett and the scenes with his real life sister were heart breaking. To see a man who defined himself by his intelligence, slowly devolve in front of your eyes was genuinely upsetting and yet handled with a deft touch that a lot of other series haven't ever managed. McKay wasn't pitied but rather he was cared for by each of the other cast in such a tender way that you never doubted for an instant that they were cut up inside but being strong for him.

Like I say, IMHO it's one of the most human episodes of Sci-fi and brought me to tears by the writing and acting.
