for an age of discovery toon, aside from the new intro and such, what are the long term differences compared to other toons we've created?
I absolutely love the new sound effects for the first ship you get, but am I correct in assuming their aren't really any other ships that are going to be designed in that style or with those sound effects? I see there is a starter pack, but I don't think that ship would be viable to use all the way to the end. There's the Crossfield, but I can't go through that mess to get one again. A shame you can't unlock ships across your legacy, so to speak, like SWTOR.

If you can't buy ships, aside from a lobi walker class and immensely expensive Crossfield, is it worth it to spend the time on a discovery toon? How many new styles, sounds, etc... exist for a discovery toon once you wind up in the you know where?

In the long term differences, currently there's nothing there beyond the aesthetic differences, such as the nice transporter effect and the scanning animation they use on their ships, which is very nice when compared to the other factions. It remains to be seen what will be there going forward - for example, we have no means to access DSC boffs or purchase skill manuals in the way the AoY toons can at K-13. Maybe they'll do a fleet holding down the line to account for this, or they may do nothing at all, we don't really know right now.

One advantage they do have is that it's possible for them to get their hands on a full auto version of the DSC phaser rifle which is account bound and can be fed to other characters with a bit of time and effort if you're after multiple copies. Say what you will about Discovery, but the rifles/hand phaser models are screen accurate and that's not a boast a lot of the ground weapons can make.

There will be other ships down the line that use the Discovery look - apart from the 3 you've already mentioned, the only other one live as a playable ship now is the Nimitz, the Europa class being the 25thC version of it. The starter Walker scales, but will fall behind a bit as it only goes to level 30 or 40 I think then caps out.

The warp sound effects carry through, no matter the engine or ship. It's a little weird hearing that thwwwwup when an EXCELSIOR! class warps in or out.

Other than the effects, there doesn't seem to be any real difference between my Disco toon and the first toon I made that wasn't a Delta Recruit or a Gamma Recruit. Regular toons will have access to the Disco content as well.

I think I'll be moving my stuff up to Disco through my account bank.

They did say they will be adding in all of the ships that were seen at the battle of the binary star, just that since AoD isn't a expansion you wont be getting it all at once. I imagine like the Europa, they will periodically released T6 versions of the other ships which will include their Discovery versions we well.

It just wont be together in one big package, I imagine it will be over time for the next few months till the event season starts in December and we have the Winter Wonderland and the anniversary stuff in January.

But getting back to on-topic: the worth-it question really depends from person to person.

Everyone has a different time spent to satisfaction ratio. I personally HATE new characters. Even in end-game I don't invest as much into them as I have mains with all spec trees, gears, upgrades and what not. So when it comes to discovery, I won't be spending much on it.

But I am enjoying how the warp effects and animations seem to fit regular ships. I wish I could just transfer all these animations to my mains - but really, that's the only reason I'm playing my DSC.

Other than that, I'm not going to spend time grinding spec points on this toon.

I'm with you to a degree, I spend very little time on new toons other than recruitment events. This DSC character is a little different though. I have a Crossfield on my main with a build that I love. I am working to do the same build for my new DSC toon but keep everything a little more canon. No odd weapons or visuals.

Hey, I've got a Disco-character-related question. At what point are you irrevocably whisked off to 2410? Is it at the end of the tutorial? The mission that's been released (or are there two, I only recall the one "Secrets")? I wanted to figure if it's worth it to start a guy and what I have to avoid doing to keep him in the 23rd.

While trying t save Starbase 1, a BIG Klingon battleship activates a weapon. The scene goes white, then fades to black, then it's over, and you are back in the 25th Century.

I'm a big fan of the disco visual/audio theme. I'd actually probably pay for it to put it on other toons. Love the theme, hate the grind.
