EPISODE DISCUSSION:
New Eden

This thread is for pre and post episode discussion of the 2nd episode from season 2, New Eden. If you do not wish for spoilers, then you have missed all the warnings in the title and activity stream, shocking! So if you are reading this post, then you should turn away now.

The episode first airs on the 24th of January for American viewers and the 25th January for international viewers.

Goood stuff! It was so much like TOS - find a bizarre mystery, beam down and solve it, encounter peril, moral dilemmas, etc, make hard choices.

Would've been nice to know more other than the 'angel' who saved them and what the people knew. Maybe more investigation on Discovery's behalf.

This also effectively makes two future federation incursions at WW III, one was by Picard's Enterprise E and now the USS Discovery.

I suppose the lack of more information would have something to do with the plot.

So, this was a good episode.

Honestly I wonder if its perhaps an Iconian? There a few visual similarities to what we see in STO. Although I could be grasping at straws.

You know - this is what was going through my mind too. The way they showed the depiction of the 'Angel' in the church in form of glass-painting and the over-all visuals.

But I guess that's what the writers want us to believe for now as well.

Yes, that’s been my theory as well. Here’s my reasoning.

The vague sightings and the depiction on the church glass look very similar to how they were depicted in Star Trek Online. While STO is not canon they do work closely with CBS on everything they do and CBS is the one who approves of what they put in game. In S2E1 it was stated that the enterprise scanned the signal then everything started to go haywire. That is basically what happened in the TNG episode when scanning the Iconian probe, it uploaded the Iconian computer virus to the ship. My theory is that the Iconian gateways operate using the mycelium network and the Disco use of the network has alerted them somehow.

Now, the other theory is that the Red Angles are the Preservers, which would tie into a TOS episode.

But we also saw one of the preservers in the TNG episode "The Chase" as its stated they seeded life in our Galaxy, which falls into line with other depictions we see in STO and throughout the series.

They were never stated to be preservers in TNG. STO made them into preservers in game but it's not officially canon.

the preservers "intervene" to save races from extinction right? like that TOS episode with the red indian tribe and the obelisk? its entirely possible its them, as that precursor race from TNG was never stated to be the preservers just those who can before (until STO got its claws into them)

Also 10/10 I LOVED this episode just like the other one Frakes directed

I liked it, bit more trekky / less star warsy than previous episode. Also first thought "hang on, that looks like one of them Iconian muppets", but we shall see.

I liked the scene where Suru told Stamet how much time was left before impact, then looked at him and basically said "well, ♥♥♥♥ off already to the spore drive, will ya?!"

I'm enjoying the crew interaction more and more. Saru has grown on me since he found a bit of sass. Anson Mount is just perfect as Pike and I just loved when he turned around to Burnham and basically said, "Oh yeah? Prove it." Great moment as she realised that she couldn't.

Overall I really enjoyed the episode and completely missed that Frakes directed it. Imma go with Iconians as the red Angels.

decent ep I am a little bummed they had to use the rock they went through all the trouble to get . I really dont remember in any of the star treks of actually seeing Iconoans I remember the portal but not seeing them the only time I seen Iconians in in the Star trek on line game also I am not sure if Iconians would save Humans
