Still too shiny and futuristic. Maybe if this were set in the JJverse it would be okay, but there's no way a show that looks like this is set before TOS

The thing is, there is no way TOS should look the way it does 250 years from now. In 2019 we have more advanced looking computers and devices now than what TOS had in their show.

I do agree that Disco looks more futuristic than TOS but so does real life 2019. To me, Disco looks like what 2256 would look like if the starting point was present day and not 1966.

Yeah good point and that's how i see it too.

TOS was all wonderful back when the only thing to make sets and FX out of was sticky tape and random cardboard cutouts with fruit machine buttons glued on. And it got that 60's sci-fi feel just right without being too campy and naff looking which a lot of other shows fell into the trap of doing.

But there's no way that could stand up to the test of time and to stick with some rule about not moving beyond that asthetic would hamper the IP were it ever to try and visualize the historic aspects of the Federation. We have better looking screens and handheld computer capable machines than even VOY had shown on screen and we are hundreds of years in the past compared to them. So it's just not realistic anymore to have tech in sci-fi shows not look futuristic from the viewer point of view.
TOS was future for the 60's, TNG was the future for the 80's. DSC is the future today's viewers expect and could believe in.

I certainly hope that isn't what the future looks like. You'll have to wear sunglasses indoors or risk blinding yourself. The actual designs aren't bad. It's all the chrome and lights that are the problem. What's the point of massive lights on the walls, and on the floor, and on the pillars supporting the ceiling?

They need to tone it down and understand that making everything bright and shiny doesn't make it good. The Star Trek shows before the reboot were more balanced. They could make sets that were attractive, put in enough technology to make it futuristic, and not blow their whole budget on floor wax and chrome paint.

This, so much this. It's confounding how much the Die-hard Rabid fans of TOS use "It doesn't look like TOS too futuristic" like it's some battle cry, meanwhile they're using computers that are more advanced than anything seen on TOS.

In TOS the federation still has the death penalty. Most states in the US don't even have that anymore.
The federation still has the death penalty, General Order 7. Those pesky Talosians...

Hits the nail on the head. TNG, Voy and DS9, were all so much more modest in set design, there's not real need for lights, and overly polished walls, it just looks so fake and unrealistic. Enterprise also had a good stylistic choice, it was very industrial, which fit with the period it was supposed to be set, early space exploration.

Discovery has fallen into the trap of shiny things being futuristic, a number of sci-fi shows did it in the past, and they didn't age well because of it, because it ends up looking cheesy as technology improves. While TNG, as an example, the set design is very, modest, it's not in your face, and it ages a lot better because of it. I don't think TOS aged well for set design, because they made choices that looked futuristic for the time, rather than going for a more modest design.

Are the Discovery sets bad? Not really, the layouts are nice, but as Noram says, way too bright, and personally, I don't think it will age too well.

I'm not getting this bright and shiny that everyone is talking about. We are talking 250 years in the future here. I'm hoping by then we have created materials that just do not get dirty Big Grin

It's hard to miss the polished floors, and bright lights everywhere, unless you have sunglasses on Tongue Out

If we did ever create materials that were self cleaning, and floors that could polish themselves, I wonder if we would build ships with them, or limit the materials to areas where it would be needed, like a medical bay would make sense to have that kind of tech, but corridors and everywhere? Bit over the top, unless it's something in abundance that is easy to make.
