Having troubles patching..

    Hey!

    Lately I've started to have troubles patching. But I never had any problem downloading the entire game from scratch.

    So whenever I open the patcher, it starts downloading but after just a few MB's it stops. Then my net activity is zero. I have to close the client and open it again, to get it going. I have to do this 4-5 times to get the patch done.

    Then when I play the next time, it says some files are broken.. So it does a force verify and starts patching, then almost immediately freezes. Then it does this thing that I open and close, and eventually it just seems to give up.. And there's nothing to patch.

    Then the next time I play, same thing..

    My internet connection is slow, but it's the same as it's ever been. I don't use Wi-Fi, only cables. And I use Windows 10 64 bit, Professional.

    I can't login or patch at all now, please help!

    I downloaded Saints Row IV from Steam earlier and that went at my full internet speed and all fine, but Star Trek Online is unable to patch. Or gives up because the connection timed out or is too slow.

    It just does a few KB and then it stops.. Then my net activity goes to 0... Then it just sits there.. The picture commerical thing like "T6 Tholian ships" keeps changing and stuff, everything is normal.. My internet is working normal, Steam can download games.

    Just the Star Trek Online patcher.. It just sits there, with no net traffic. It's still being allowed through the firewall.

    I tried to delete the entire game folder and re-download it through Steam, it downloads the client.. Then the client updates itself at full internet speed, but when the time comes to actually download the game.. It just does this...

    I've tried on-demand patching on and off.. And using a EU proxy since I'm in Europe. No help!

    At this point I'd check with your ISP to see if its something on their end. Try turning off the proxy, I've had problems downloading through that in the past.

    My first suggestion would be to check your firewall. Make sure all of the game files are in the exception/allowed list.

    In the bootloader, click Options > scroll down to > Command Line > type: -d3d9 > Save+
    Or, try starting in Safe Mode.

    Try pinging the update servers. Not just 3 times, let it burn in for a few minutes.
    • Start > Search Programs and Files > type: Command Prompt > Right click > Run as Administrator
    • type: ping -t 208.95.184.200
    ○ CTRL+Break to pause, CTRL+C to stop

    If there are no timeouts, try tracert in the same window.
    • type: tracert 208.95.184.200

    Look for exceptionally large times. Outliers. if everything is running 8 ms - 30 ms, and then there's one that times out or is 300 ms, there could be a problem on your path. Run tracert a few times after running the ping test.

    Try turning OFF your proxy. Point your DNS at 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 Those are google's open DNSes. Set them in your router. Or, if you're plugged directly into your modem, set them in Windows.

    Try turning off ALL anti-virus programs.

    Try reinstalling all of the Windows Visual C++ for Visual Studio.

    Of course, none of this may address the issue. The ping tests and the tracert tests are diagnostic only. They won't fix anything but they might point you in the proper direction. It's also handy information to have if you finally give in and try contacting Cryptic Support. If you have to do that, I will pray for you.

    When the patch fails the first time does it try to open up a Cryptic Error Handling program at all? It usually does it when the game crashes but might just do it it the patch fails too. I've often found that this error reporting tool they use locks up and crashes itself so i always use task manager to just close it right away.
    I don't know if that's your problems tbh, i'm not too knowledgeable about this side of things.

    Also navigate to the Drive the Game is installed on X: being the drive letter be it c:\ d:\ e:\ etc... then run the following on it:
    Chkdsk on Windows 10 Command Prompt, explained could be a bad sector on disk.

    Chkdsk Supplementary Log if error's identified above may require addition options.

    Let it run chkdsk X: /r ◄── Note: Process explained above.
    ╘ May require restart to if on System Partition, won't want to run on C: (System) while OS is in use or applications open.

    If errors are found & fixed it could be signs to replace in 3m-1.5y, if still under warranty file a RMA with manufacturer or consider repairing or replacing the drive. Chkdsk can find and fix (most) errors, but a sign the drive will need to be repaired or replaced, how long really depends on the drive but regular backups will prevent loss.

    On reboot load not from ARC but X:\...\Star Trek Online\Star Trek Online.exe ◄───

    Hey guys and thanks for all the input.

    I had to go out today and not for work (ugh, society.. lol.) Anyway, I decided to leave the patcher open just like in the screenshot above.. And when I came home many hours later it was done downloading the entire game.

    From my ethernet log it's done a few MB at a time.. Then stopped patching, and it's just been sitting there like in the screenshot with 0 net activity.. So instead of downloading the game in 1,5-2 hours.. It's taken around 6 hours...

    Highest download speed was 7 MBPS... My net line is 25 MBPS and STO usually does patch around that speed before. So I don't know what's up.

    And yeah, this time I tried patching without the proxy. It's easter so ISP has no people at work except a few tiny hours in the middle of the day.

    But yeah, everything seems to work great.. And it does seem that the Star Trek Online patcher does work, it doesn't close or anything. It's just VERY slow, and it keeps having pauses for 5-15 minutes while patching...

    Never experienced this before.

    Patches a few MB..
    Stops for 5-15 minutes.
    Continues patching a few MB..
    Stops again.

    Really weird.

    I did a couple of force verify's to ensure the game files were downloaded properly and everything seems to be in order, also my computer seems to be fine.

    that's kind of what the ping test was for. Set it up, let it run, see if there something going on between you and Cryptic. At least you'd have a log of the pattern.

    But if you got the patch and it seems to be running fine... RESULT! Cool

    The ping test is great as suggested by Cmdr Taku, and for sure testing patch server connectivity! Thumbs up

    I had to suggest something similar to one in game on UFPlanets Chat, as they were having LAG today mostly at ESD.

    /netgraph 1 (ping results) ─ less than 150 is great while more than 250-275 can show signs of lag.
    /netgraph 2 (visuals)
    /netgraph 0 (disables)

    I believe the Force Verify eventually fixed it however; so neither of us quite sure what caused the issue?

    I used to have a similar problems in the past. This is not your internet or ISP but rather something with some of their patch servers.

    So AT's test would've confirmed for you that problem was not on your end when it came to other things such as YouTube and specific to STO's patching.

    Yeah, everything else on my internet is fine. YouTube.. Netflix streaming.. When my Xbox One updates or I am downloading a game through Steam it downloads constantly at my full internet speed.. 25 MBPS.

    But Star Trek Online is only about 7 at the highest, and it constantly takes long pauses while patching.. And during the pause there is no internet activity.

    So I can patch.. It's just VERY VERY VERY VERY... VERY slow.. For some reason.

    On demand patching and proxy settings make no difference.
