Chief Tactical Officer Log, After-Action Report, Stardate 58813.4

This log entry is to officially record the events of the proceeding day. On Stardate 58812, while the Ares was in orbit around Dorvan V, fifteen Nausicaan fighters left the surface of the planet on an attack course to intercept the Ares. Initial tactical analysis indicated that the fighters were modified with Dominion technology, specifically Polaris beam weapons. This was confirmed during the engagement. There was initially a delay in the Nausicaans attack, which we believed was due to infighting among the Nausicaan war party leaders. Analysis of communications traffic patterns appeared to confirm the same. Captain Teriir ordered the ship's complement of fighters launched and an initial volley of torpedoes with proximity fuses to disrupt the Nausicaan fighters' formations. He also ordered rescue operations for the Dorvanite hostages to begin on the planet. As the orbital action commenced, the Nausicaan fighters demonstrated uncharacteristic tactics, such as a double column formation, indicating that they had accessed Dominion battle logs and utilized their tactics. All enemy fighters were destroyed, with the last fighter being eliminated after indicating a surrender under false pretenses and initiating a weapons lock.

Almost immediately after, a Nausicsan Destroyer and ten additional fighters, all modified with Dominion Polaron beams, approached the Ares on an attack vector from the rear. Communications were intercepted indicating a schism between Nausicaan leadership, with several war chiefs arguing. Apparently, the de facto Nausicaan leader of planetary operations had not authorized the initial fighter attack, and was intent on destroying the Ares himself. The intercepted communications also indicated a weakness in enemy forces on the ground. Battle commenced and the Ares and fighter crews performed admirably. The USS Lakota arrived shortly thereafter to render assistance. The enemy jammed communications, but Lt. Maxwell Storm was able to reestablish communications between the Ares and the Lakota. All enemy combatants were soon destroyed or subdued, with the Captain ordering Borg tactic Lambda Pi, sometimes informally referred to in Starfleet as "The Can Opener," to be used against the Destroyer to render it inoperable. Forty-three Nausicaan survivors were taken into custody aboard the Lakota. A damage report, and list of casualties will be attached to this log injury. The Captain sustained non life threatening injuries from bridge debris during the fight.

Captain Teriir ordered ground action against the Nausicaan forces holding the Dorvanites captive, taking advantage of their depletion of ground forces as noted earlier. With the assistance of the local population, we were able to locate a vent in the cave system that served as a sort of back entry way to the chamber where the hostages were held. A small sensor recon team led by Ensign Brag Malin of the Outfitting Division was dispatched to oversee the deployment of sensor drones modified to look like local wildlife. The team consisted of Petty Officer 2nd Class Bintou Keita, a technician with the Outfitting Division, local Dorvanite guide Wakaro, and Senior Chief Tran Huong Lien, a decorated security officer with Dominion war experience. A primary assault party consisting of 8 Phoenix Team operatives led by Ensign Damian Wolfe were en route to begin an attack on the Nausicaan forces and liberate the hostages, but they were not in place at the time of the Captains orders. Based on initial recon intelligence, odds were significant that the recon team could effect rescue of the hostages with a surprise attack, aided by a diversionary air assault by the Ares fighter squadrons. Also a forward assault was feinted by the runabout Thames landing in front of the cave. In order to draw the Nausicaan troops out of the cave and barracks, the fighters feigned being unable to establish target locks due to the natural interference of Kelbonite ore in the area. They also staged a crash of the Thames caused by friendly fire. This diverted enemy forces from the caves and barracks to the false crash site. The recon team was able to subdue the limited Nausicaan troops guarding the hostages. The hostages escaped toward the vent in the rear of the cave, with the reon team sealing off their retreat by causing a collapse of part of the cave. Special commendations are to be given to Ensign Malin and Petty Officer Keita, who had limited combat experience prior to the operation. His detailed report is attached to this log.

Phase two of the ground assault began with the feigned crash site. Outfitter Ren Kiku had initially assessed the crash area as being far enough away from Kelbonite deposits to make safe use of the transporters possible. After pilot Lt. Kodin Watson effected the "crash," the entire complement of the Thames beamed 100 meters away behind a ridge, leaving the runabout booby-trapped to emit anesthezine gas once breached by the Nausicaans. The operation was successful, with Ensign Wolfe's force defeating the remaining Nausicaans in the barracks and near the "crash" site. Ensign Wolfe detailed report is attached to this log.

The final action of the day was internal. Security Division Ensign Wallace Barron, over a period of time, gained access to several ship's systems by unknown means, acting as part of what may be a larger conspiracy of Starfleet Officers with anti-Cardassian agendas. Barron coordinated with several Bajoran insurgents who were brought aboard the Ares as relief workers, to orchestrate the deaths of Dorvan colonists with Cardassian weapons, in order to provoke Federation action against the Cardassian government. As the investigation is still ongoing, I will limit this log to my own actions during the incident.

The incident began with Ensign Barron taking the Captain hostage, as well as several ambassadors and crew members, behind force fields on Deck 10. Barron also murdered a diplomatic aide as a show of force, and revealed that he had kept a cache of Cardassian weapons and more importantly, a set of explosives in the Cargo Bay he was assigned to as part of his normal duties. He threatened to use a detonator if anyone attempted to breach his force field to effect a rescue of the captain and the hostages. As preservation of the lives of the Dorvanites seemed the highest priority, followed by the safety of the ship, I beamed into the shuttle bay adjacent to Cargo Bay 2 with members of Phoenix Team. I also ordered Lt. Victoria Kenney to take measures to secure and evacuate Deck 10 of non essential personnel. Lt. Maxwell Storm offered to assist with the analysis and disarmament of the bombs, accompanying me to the shuttle bay. His performance was particularly commendable, entering a shuttle under enemy fire to perform the analysis, and later effecting the quickl, efficientl, and most importantly, safe disarmament of the bombs.

Less than two minutes after our arrival, the Bajoran extremists entered the shuttle bay. As we were outnumbered 2 to 1, and the cargo bay offered equal cover to both sides, we quickly found ourselves at an impasse. I attempted to negotiate with the Bajoran leader, but she would not engage. Lt. Kurt's of Phoenix Force is to be commended for his quick thinking, utilizing MACO tactic Edison Epsilon Nine, first utilized by Major Balthazar Edison during the Earth Romulan War during the boarding of the USS Cochrane. The tactic was effective, and we were able to neutralize the Bajorans and place them under arrest. By that time, Lt. Storm had already established a dampening field to prevent Barron from remotely detonating the explosive devices, and we proceeded to the Cargo bay to identify and disarm them. We encountered 12 explosive devices of Cardassian origin, with anti-proton/tricobalt warheads and Bajoran type, Occupation-era fuses. The payload of each of the explosives was estimated somewhere in the range of at 214 isotons, which was more than sufficient to completely destroy the ship. Lt. Storm was able to ascertain that the wiring of the devices was isolinear based and had a progressive voltage setup, and devise a method to deactivate the detonation matrices. Upon securing the explosives, I ordered a forensic analysis of the devices, and reported back to the hostage area to find Barron already in custody by security forces. I then assisted them in escorting Barron to the brig. This concludes this log entry. Please find attached all relevant reports and logs.

    Personal Log, Stardate 58813.4

The good thing about fighting is that it doesn't provide the opportunity to think. Tactically, yes. But philosophically....

Yesterday was an interesting day. After two decades of fighting against Cardassians, I found myself fighting for them. I didn't realize it at the time, because as I said, there wasn't much time to think. But I find myself at an odd place here.

In many ways, the Cardassians have been the bogeymen of my life, to use the Terran term. Just like my father and grandfather's generations had to contend with the Moropa, the Cardassians became my own personal enemies during my Starfleet service.

Did I hate them? Not like my fore parents hated the Moropa. The Cardassians were base, brutal...concealing it all between a lie and a smile. They convinced themselves that oppression of others was the only solution to starvation. They are hardly the first species to do so. But no, I don't think I ever hated them at all. I think I just accepted as fact that as a Starfleet officer, I'd always be fighting, or waiting to fight Cardassians, because they would never rid themselves of their own lies.

So what does that say about me as a Starfleet Officer?

Hopefully....hopefully, when we leave here, I'll embrace a spark of optimism more suited to the principles I represent. I'll leave old prejudices behind. I have seen in Wallace Barron what comes of such thoughts. It is easy to chide a young fool, but I must make sure that I do not become an old one.
