While I don't agree with everything that is brought up as 'fact' in this video, and some of his assumptions are a little reaching, especially regarding crew quarters for Officers/Families while neglecting that Enlisted would have had smaller quarters/shared quarters in some cases, It is a good watch.

Here are the same Blueprints he used in the video if you want to have a looksee: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1uZ...GHpjQZZ46Jz_Wz

I think it was in the TNG Tech Manual, someone said that the ship designers laid an outline of the ENT-D over southern California and everybody was staggered at the size of the ship.
    • Found it. Page 23, footnote:

Fairly early on, Rick [Sternbach] did a drawing for our writers showing the Enterprise superimposed over a map of the Paramount Studios lot. This was fun because it gave us for the first time a concrete idea of how big the ship "really" is. A bit later, though, we started to think of some of the implications of this enormous size. We began to realize that it would be pretty difficult for a structure that size to maintain its rigidity and form, especially under the tremendous accelerations that impulse and warp drive would likely entail. (We envisioned the main impulse engines firing, squashing the ship like a partially deflated blimp. This might actually be a valid way for a space vehicle to operate, but it would probably look pretty silly on film.) Because of this, we came up with the "structural integrity field," which we envision as a powerful forcefield that helps to hold the ship together.

Also, the whole video could have been avoided if a copy of the TNG Tech Manual had been available.
    • On page 7:

"The living areas of the starship have been designed for maximum comfort and safety while the crew is conducting a mission. Long-term studies of humanoid cultures have confirmed that as each race embarked upon permanent occupation of space, large personal living spaces had to be established, especially on early sublight expeditions. The Enterprise allows for some 110 square meters of living space per person, in addition to community space and the areas allocated to purely working functions. While some engineers on the Galaxy Class Project questioned the relatively large size of the vessel, opting for a smaller, more efficient design, it was conceded that the large size provided a greater number of mission options, given the changing social, political, and economic conditions in the Milky Way."
"And when I saw the breadth of my domain, I wept, for there were no more worlds left to conquer."

I have the Galaxy Class blueprints round here somewhere and they are pretty much stuffed full of rooms on all decks. But there's a very modular feel to it all as well. I guess they could rearrange the inside as missions required it; colonists, troops, refugees, cargo.

And i think something we rarely saw on screen was that there's meant to be a lot of open plan social areas on board too; big open galleries, lounges etc. That wold account for a lot of space too.

That is true it was stated in a few episodes of TNG that the Enterprise could take on a wide range of missions from planetary evacuations to transporting of colonists, prisoners. In Yesterday's Enterprise Yar even said that the Enterprise was capable of transporting over 1000 troops.

It goes to show that the sheer size of the Galaxy class is insane especially when you look at the tech manuals and see all the amenities she had onboard.

Yeah the size of her is massive.

The longest ship in the world today is the Seawise Giant, technically now just a floating oil storage vessel but originally a tanker that sailed around. It's only about 450m long and 70m wide.

The biggest cruise liner in the world is the Symphony of the Seas, still only a mere 362m long and 66m wide, and it can carry over 6500 people.

The Galaxy class is 641m long and 473m wide; that is absolutely huge when you consider most of that is a solid circle shape of filled out hull capacity. It's not a long thin ship, its a massive disk the size of some small towns.
I reckon it could easily hold tens of thousands of people quite easily considering they have technology like replicators and free energy essentially.

Stuff like the Ent-J are even more ridiculous....and don't even get started on things like the Voth Citadel of Fortress Ship lol! Shocked

I'm sure the Galaxy class in "Yesterday's Enterprise" was different in its interior design to be more of a battleship and carry a larger quantity of personnel for the alternate time period also.

I saw this video awhile ago and also one highlighting the TOS Enterprise.

It may not have been 100% accurate, but it explained how it was possible for 400 people to live on just 2 decks of a Constitution class starship.

    From the technical manual:

The Galaxy class starship represents Starfleet’s most sophisticated achievement in multimission ship systems design. Pursuant to Starfleet Exploration Directive 902.3, the following objectives have been established for the Galaxy Class Starship Development Project: • Provide a mobile platform for a wide range of ongoing scientific and cultural research projects. • Replace aging Ambassador and Oberth class starships as primary instruments of Starfleet’s exploration programs. • Provide autonomous capability for full execution of Federation policy options in outlying areas. • Incorporate recent advancements in warp powerplant technology and improved science instrumentation.

It was big because it was many ships and segments of Starfleet merged into one vessel. And it was still mostly empty to allow for large evacuation or diplomatic missions. Interesting that defense was never mentioned as a primary role which you can see in its having civilians on board, bulkiness, and lack of hull armor. The Enterprise E ultimately showed the evolution of Starfleet from a somewhat naive organization to one scarred by conflicts with the Borg and Dominion.

Makes sense, in several episodes of TNG when the ship separated, Captain Picard or his designee would always order the non-essential crew to the saucer section. Probably because of all the extra space for evacuations. The battle drive section could be used to delay or deter enemy forces to allow the saucer to get away.

Very interesting. The Enterprise’s sheer size has always amazed me.

The one thing that has always made me wonder however is this. Just imagine the amount of metal that would go in to the xonstructuon if a ship like that. Not to mention the sher quantity of materials that would go in to the constructuon if earth spacedock.

Now i do understand that replicator tech exists and maybe all that material was just built from a sub atomic level up using replicators to order the elsectrons, protons and neutrons etc. But we are still bound to hit a level where we will start to find the raw building blicks of matter increasingly more scarce.

Sure that will be ways around that. Pure energy into matter perhaps. But still unless physics have totally changed we still live in an ultimately closed system with some limits on energy etc.

Anyway just a thought experiment i have always been rattling around everytime i see massive space fleets and other enormous constructions

Oh yes. And dobt get me started on the "how the hells" involved in constructing a dyson sphere
