from what ive read in various books, etc Intrepid class ships have a primary warp core and a reserve warp core...
the Prometheus class has 3 cores, obviously....
classes such as the Vesta and Luna, are supposed to have twin intermix chambers / warp cores in a side-by-side set up....
the Akira is supposed to twin cores also just located near each of the catamarans... (which makes sense considering there appear to be ejection hatches on the ventral hull and the fact that the Akira has a fly-through shuttlebay…)
the old Bradbury class had a core in each engineering hull.... it was a odd looking ship... like 2 Excelsior engineering hulls connected via a saucer...
Yeah sadly the books and most of the written lore isn't considered direct canon. Sadly the shows and the written soft canon and surrounding lore share a massive disconnect.

That 2nd warp core really addresses one issue I had with the Galaxy Class, the fact that civilian passengers were expected to escape via the saucer section , which did not house the warpcore while the stardrive, which did, stayed and fought, this fixes that issue for me Big Grin
Even if it had a Warp Core it had no Warp Engines so Fusion Reactors were good enought.

2 warp cores would be cool. I hope they have a chance to fix the Separation mechanic so the saucer pet doesn't fire off anti-matter spread the moment you separate and the enemy is out of range, that's if the conoles equipped of course. If not, then I hope they adjust it so that it repairs itself when it's hulls low, rather than just sitting there burning in space.

Canon wise, even though it's not stated, the Prometheus is likely the only ship that carried more than one warp core due to the multi-vector assault mode. It even had the mini pop out nacelles on the saucer section.

From my understanding, the lower half could continue generating a warp field around the saucer allowing it to carry on briefly.

probably so, we saw this being done when the Enterprise NX-01 (top) merged with Columbia NX-02 warp field
