When we look at the video games that have truly stood the test of time, MMORPGs (short for massively multiplayer online role playing game) are always near the top of that list. The genre has been around for decades, and many of its earliest titles like Everquest are still around to this day.

So, what's the secret sauce that makes MMOs so popular and long-lasting? Broadly speaking, they offer players a sense of freedom, giving them massive open worlds to explore, dozens of side activities to pursue, spooky dungeons to conquer, and epic quests to complete -- all in the company of thousands, or even millions, of other players.

These players might cooperate with you, work against you, or do both at different parts of your in-game journey. Best of all, these players can live just about anywhere in the world. With few exceptions, the player bases of most popular modern MMOs span multiple countries. You can hop into a World of Warcraft Dungeon queue with players from Germany, Russia, Canada, and France without even realizing it!

However, impressive as many MMOs are, like most other genres, it's always been survival of the fittest. Lesser games have come and gone over the years, long since faded into obscurity. In contrast, others have maintained massive player bases due to their excellent gameplay, unique features, or frequent updates.

I have played half of the games in that list:

- Lord of the Rings
- EVE
- Word of Warcraft
- Guild Wars
- Star Wars the Old Republic

I've played EVE and LOTR.

EVE i could not get into tbh. I enjoy a game for the casual fun side and though EVE does look awesome and has a lot of potential it's just too much "spreadsheets online" for me to enjoy for fun after a hard day at work.

LOTR i found pretty fun and not too tricky to get into. It felt pretty nice and relaxed and the players seemed a decent bunch too. Not been on for a while, though i may install it again as I know a few guys n' gals here play it.

I've played Lotr for quite a while - because I was interested in experiencing Middle Earth. I thought it was pretty cool - quite faithful to the books (until you hit the new endgame, as that is beyond where the books ended) and kinda neat to walk around all the areas from the books.
Their version of Winter Wonderland is pretty fun too, probably better than Q's

To call STO an MMO is an insult, they gave up everything that makes an MMO an MMO it is nothing more than a glorified Singe Player game that forces players to play and work together if there is no other choice to get certain items.

Here's the quick overview of EVE:

1. Load up Microsoft Excel.
2. Complete your taxes.

That about sums it up for me!

Never played Black Desert Online, I'm not a fan of the Asian style MMO's/RPG's and given my dislike for all things Final Fantasy, both are games I'm unlikely to ever dabble in.

That said, I have gone back to SWTOR the other night for a look at it these days and the nostalgia came flooding back.

SWTOR was and, had my computer not decided that its time had come, I still love it. The storylines are amazing, fighting animations are amazing and generally it is an amazing game for me, I love all the unique force powers and abilities your characters get.

I have played every game on that list. I have only dabbled in Runescape, I would have played LOTR more if only they could fix the UI, for a 4k monitor the ui doesn't scale and all of the text and things are hard to see. EvE is a graphically beautiful excel spreadsheet

I am a founder in SWTOR and still continue to play it off an on to get my star wars fix. I also play FF XIV off and on too. I have been in WoW since Burning Crusade and it is still my go to game. I play GW2 occasionally since its free to play once you have bought it.

I have played two of those titles.... WoW and SWTOR. I lost interest in SWTOR and quit playing WoW when they introduced pandas as characters. The "munchkins" were bad enough... and the pandas put it over the top for me.

I played Runescape back in the day. I loved it.

But 2007? I could swear I played it earlier than that, probably around 2005.

Runescape was a browser-based mmo that was released back in 2001.
