I'm actually over a year late starting this between one thing or another, but I made a start on the work today.

While my main hardware is between 2 and 4 years old at this point with a couple of exceptions, my case, fans and PSU are now about 11 years old so it's time to send them to the great big scrapheap in the sky with a bit of a refurb to improve cooling and basically update the foundation of the system. I was asked to take pictures when I originally queried something with Bridger and while there's not much to see yet, here we are!

This is the case, a Cooler Master MC500P. It's the mid-range entry of the series, has cable management space behind the motherboard tray, SSD compartments and a separator panel between the case and the PSU. It can be taken apart quite extensively and you'll see later I've removed all the drive cages except the one at the bottom. It comes with a mesh front panel by default but also comes with a solid one too. You can't really see it here, but I've kept the mesh one. The missing side panel is smoked glass. This time around, I'm going to try and keep the cables tidy and only use the minimum needed, as my old rig is a mess on that front. There's a good whack of space there, so careful positioning and some cable ties (Velcro ones, not plastic in case I ever need to remove something) should do the trick.

First things first, the PSU. It's a Corsair HX1000i. Though it appears to be upside down, it's normal view on the other side. The fan is pointing away rather than into the case as it has a vent built into the base with a dust cover. I may have to remove it again when it's time to do the wiring, I just mounted it to keep things together.

The rectangle on the back of the mobo tray is a Corsair Commander Pro (the previously mentioned query with Bridger, who recommended the part) and that'll be used to control the fans. I have made a small mistake in mounting it there as there may not be quite enough give for the cables leading from the plugs to clear and sit with the cable cover to the left, though it unscrews off and there's a gap between it and the frame, so I may still get away with it. If not, I've got just enough room to turn it sideways and mount it on the raised lip to the right if needs be without interfering with the side panel.

And here's the fans. They're all Corsair ML 140 LED (Blue) 4 pin models and there's 6 total. 3 front intakes, 2 top exhausts and 1 rear exhaust. Having looked at the cables, all of them will reach the controller without needing extensions if I can keep it behind the motherboard. Otherwise the rear one at least will need help. I'm not confident enough to try water cooling, but each fan by itself at full RPM (2000) is quite loud, hence the need for a controller to throttle that back. I'd say around 1200-1400 (60-70%) should be sufficient to keep things cool and the noise acceptable.

That's it for now, I need to get a couple of parts including a new hard drive before I get on to swapping the motherboard over so this is as far as I can get for the moment.

Nice! Investment in case and PSU is fundamental, because they are the parts that are not changed easily.
