(COVID-19) otherwise known before as the Novel Coronavirus and the possible resulting (SARS-CoV-2), is an infectious disease that first appeared in the Capital of Wuhan within the Hubei province of China in late 2019. The disease is a mutation of the already existing SARS (SARS-CoV) and it is much less responsive to current methods of treatment than SARS-CoV was.

COVID-19 is primarily exchanged between people via respiratory droplets from coughs and sneezes. A secondary vector it spreads through is by contact. The virus can live on various surfaces including hands, clothing, plastic, wood, glass and metal for quite some time and is easily transferred into a new host by contact with an infected surface and then the potential victim moving their hand near their face.

Through these methods the virus has infected more and more people to the point that it has reached World Pandemic proportions.

But you have probably already heard this, and likely still, you could be tired of hearing it. This virus is no joke, it is deadly, and it is a very real clear and present danger. But this post is written by a Star Trek fan and for Star Trek fans, and as Trekkies or Trekkers or Discoverers or Picardians. We should seek to better ourselves and others through this pandemic.

I invite you to stay informed, do your own research just as any Starfleet Officer would and stay safe.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coronavirus_disease_2019

But more so, I write to you so that you may serve humanity, that you can bring Trek ideals to the real world.
As the virus spreads, more and more truly vulnerable people are being forced to isolate and cannot do for themselves in getting supplies. This problem is compounded as more and more online delivery services become overtaxed with orders. Here in New Zealand we are also in full Lockdown for a month, at minimum. During this time supermarkets are backlogged with delivery orders and in some cases people can’t get a food order for weeks, in most cases not at all as no available delivery slots are available.

In our lockdown there are only first line responders, hospitals, pharmacies, supermarkets and a handful of other “Essential Services” staff that are allowed to leave home. For the rest of us, it is only if we need an essential service that we can go out or on occasion a short walk. But among those allowed outside there are also volunteers, people who recognise that those at high risk, those that should definitely not go out. We do so in their stead, to run errands, get supplies such as food and medication. We practice the same social distancing rules as well as use gloves and masks to protect ourselves and those we are trying to help.

As one of those volunteers I write this message not to pass on information but to plead with all of you, as a Human being who so desperately wants humanity to show the best of itself to one another in these difficult times.

If you are able bodied and at low risk of complications, in the event that you contract the virus. if you have no one vulnerable at home who you can’t risk getting it. Volunteer! Please. So long as your local government permits it, of course.

And if you can’t go out for one reason or another, don’t feel discouraged. You can offer help in so many other ways such as calling to check on others, call and have a chat so they don’t feel alone. Organise online groups and events. Offer to do some administration for front line support services. Or if you’re in a country that hasn’t had to isolate, please also feel free to reach out to those who are.

You don’t have to go outside to help, but if you can. I encourage you to do so as that is not something everyone can do. Be innovative. I know some of you may think it childish to say this, but right now. “You are Starfleet, or you are the Empire.” Both embody courage, innovation and honour. Take those values to heart and think of how /YOU/ can help others. Don’t let hesitation or fear hold you back. If we want this world to change for the better, we must be that change. We have to show the best of us to one another.

I have always loved this quote from when I heard it, quite a few years ago on Star Trek Online. “Though you sail upon a ship in storm, YOU wear the uniform.” This to me is a motto to live by, that I represent the integrity and high morale calibre of the characters I watched as a kid. Jean-Luc Picard, Spock, Kathryn Janeway, Sisko. Though fictional, the values they imparted upon me, WERE NOT and I am willing to bet those values were imparted onto some of you as well, if not all of you.

So stand up, shake lose your concerns and offer you hand wherever you can. Show The Best of Us. Let’s do this together!

    Be safe and God Speed.

This is a rather encouraging way to look at our situation. Nice read.

Well said friendo! To our essential services I tip my hat and raise my glass!

That being said.... To the rest of you, even if you can't volunteer you are helping to save EVERYONE by staying at home. Who knew being an introvert meant that one day by turning to a star trek group I could be doing my part in saving the world, look mah - I'm a super hero from my home office! Big Grin
