The Borg were originally meant to be insectoids, like a sort of ant hive or similar. But the budget meant they had to dial back the idea a bit.

It's a pity as they would have been quite cool i think; a totally alien mentality that was only concerned with expansion and consuming resources for this end. Something like WH40K's Tyranids, only maybe less gruesome.

The Borg are similar though. They are a hive, they have a queen, their objective is alien and relentless.

True but the process of assimilation would be radically different. Possibly not even implemented at all if they did go that direction. The way it is now has given the Borg an insidious nature, you could be manipulated by them into doing anything. That drives home more as a point when those already fallen look like you rather than if it was a totally alien form.

Beyond that, they've told some good stories about dealing with trauma, and even brought a bit about what it means to be a person into the mix.
I don't know how they could have done that without the borg as cybernetic body stealers.

Imagine if they had gone with their original concept of insectoids. Like Sul already pointed out, 40K's Tyranids but instead of recycling your organic matter into whatever they need, they organically assimilated you. So you looked human but were possessed by the hive mind and augmented with organic enhancements. Bio-plasma weapons, chitin armour etc etc. Now put them into a starfleet vessel that has had the same done to it (bio-neural gel packs assimilated into the collective) send a distress signal and by the time another starfleet vessel turns up to assist, you're ready to rinse-repeat. It'd almost be too easy to assimilate Earth covertly.

Hmm... I wonder if the whole brain parasite bugs infecting the top of starfleet story line in TNG was perhaps meant as a precursor to the insectoid Borg theme? Or maybe that's where the idea of insectoid Borg came from later? I always felt that that story line ended rather abruptly and unsatisfactory...

    That's exactly what it was

According to Michael and Denise Okuda in their Star Trek Chronology (rev. 1996, p. 290), there had been plans to connect the parasitic beings from "Conspiracy" to the Borg, but these were ultimately abandoned: "At the time the episode was written, this was apparently intended to lead to the introduction of the Borg in Star Trek: The Next Generation's second season. The Borg connection was dropped before 'Q Who?' (TNG) was written, and the truth about the parasites remains a mystery."

    Noram
"There's a point where we needed to stop and we have clearly passed it. But let's keep going and see what happens..."

Wow, neat! Thanks for that bit of trivia, that makes me feel strangely better about the whole parasite thing Smile
