So i am hoping to get a new pc next month and i have narrowed it down to a Ryzen 9 and a 2080 gfx card, the issue is what exact combination to go for, the choices are:

    1) Ryzen 9 3950x 16 cores (3.5-4.7Ghz) and an 8Gb 2080 Super

    2) Ryzen 9 3900 12 cores (3.1-4.3Ghz) and a 11Gb 2080Ti

I am really not sure wherther to go for more cores on the CPU or a more powerful gfx card...opinions are welcome

I would personally go with the 11GB one as, especially for a video card, the more memory the better and 12 cores I'd imagine could handle anything out there currently Cool.

If you're primarily gaming, and normal other use....I'd go 3900X w/ 2080 TI. If you do a lot of processor intensive/ thread intensive work, like video compiling and editing, I'd probably go the other way. You're not going to lose with either decision, but for gaming, both processors are more than capable. You'll get more benefit out of the better graphics card, IMHO. Good luck, and congratulations! You're going to have a nice system either way.

    Cheers!!!

That is a nice problem to have, choosing which top end components to buy. I'd go with the 2080 Ti and 3900 if its a gaming PC. If you are going to be using it more for content creation, CAD, etc then the 3950X. Speed difference is negligible and can easily be matched with a slight overclock (as long as you have a good motherboard, which theres no reason not to when you are looking at an R9 and 2080).

That being said, the 3080 is due to be unveiled Soon™ and I'd be tempted to wait for that if the current hardware is still meeting your requirements.

Like others have mentioned above, for gaming purposes the 3900 with 2080Ti will serve the needs you are looking to build a PC for well.

Ricwin also says the truth and its very promising. I'd wait but everyone operate on their own timeline.

I'd go with option 2 but one thing to consider is not getting the highest now, investigate what mobo socket the next amd release is and be sure to get a motherboard that you could upgrade to when you're ready. The 2080TI is definitely your choice for gaming and rendering, there's much to be said about CPU power when doing renders and autocad but most use your GPU to do a lot of the heavy lifting now. And will likely be more important as GPUs are almost always faster at rendering.

My best advice, upgrade to what you need and sit on the rest of the funds and upgrade on needs basis. I have seen far too many upgrade to the latest and drop 3k-4k on a full machine and that's them for a lot longer than they thought it would be and now their gear has been left in the dust and they drool over RTX cards with tears.

Mack was talking about that but it looks like it will be out after Cyberpunk 2077 and that (and the current lockdown) is the main reason I want to upgrade...plus the '3080' will probably be real expensive at the start.

It seems most people advise on the 2080Ti and lesser CPU, and I am going to be gaming so unless anyone has a real good reason not to I will go for the 12 core CPU and better GFX card
