    Since it's on TV right now I just wanted to share my thoughts on this episode...

    Skin of Evil is one of the best episodes of Star Trek TNG season 1. I was not a fan of the Tasha Yar character, Denise Crosby was great but it was like they didn't know what to do with her. One minute she was a tough no nonsense type woman, the next she was the frail, emotional type you see in damsel in distress type rolls. It also opened the door for her to return as her alternate reality version and eventually as her own daughter. Definitely liked Sela better, and I like how they built on the character in STO.

    We've started watching Star Trek with our 10-year-old son. Even though the "Star Trek of my Youth" was TOS, I decided that we should start him with TNG, as I think it'll be more accessible to him (I mean, one of my earliest Trek memories is "City on the Edge of Forever", but I know my kid). We've watched the first 3 episodes (or do we count "Encounter at Farpoint" as 2 episodes?). My wife and I were talking about how Yar's characterization between "The Naked Now" and "Code of Honor" is so all over the place. Also, Worf was very flat in the beginning. So, ultimately, I think her leaving was good.

    I agree about Sela. I just hated her in TNG, but I have to say, the way they fleshed her out in STO was really satisfying. I think my favorite episode so far (I'm only up to Future Proof) is "Midnight" at the conclusion of The Iconian War. Not only did it have a very "Trek" resolution, but it had a great evolution of Sela's character, with a nice payoff in "Survivor".

    But, yeah, I'm on the side of "Skin of Evil" being a good episode.

    I usually skip this episode on TNG as I actually like Yar and can't stand how they kill her off with this random hate monster. Yar is a very talented professional so she's excellent at keeping her professional and personal life separate and gets to let loose when she's off duty. That's something you'd expect from any military officer.

    May I just say you are doing a bang up job of raising your kid? Smile Just be sure to skip Shades of Grey, or you might get a visit from child services...

    I started mine off with TNG as well, and now we are almost through DS9.

    I think Yar as a character had great potential. The problem was that the characterization for her was all over the place. And while you could chalk that up to different writers, I don't think there was a clear foundation for them to start with. From episode one, other characters had clear hooks for them outside their uniforms: the prior relationship between Riker and Troi, Crusher's husband died on Picard's watch, Picard is stiff and awkward outside of his command (and rubbish with children to boot).

    But what did we have for Yar? Driven, career-oriented Starfleet tactical officer. And in episodes 2 & 3 they call out her being attracted to two very different people. She was wasted potential.

    Incidentally, Worf didn't have a great start, either: Klingon officer in Starfleet. Not much else.

    In my opinion, season 1 is weak and Skin of Evil is by far the weakest episode.
    Yes, they hadn't had much money, so the writing was not only all over the place but also differing in quality and you can see that especially when looking at the "spandex" uniforms in the first half (probably the origin of the "Picard Maneuver" - to say it in the immortal words of Cerial Killer: "Spandex: It's a privilege, not a right.")...

    ...but yeah I get it. First Season and such...

    That Tasha was a wasted oportunity, I agree but this was mostly the "fault" of Cosby herself by walking away on her own:

    ~~~
    Season 1, even back as a kid, only got good in the last 5-ish minutes:
    And yes, I'am heavily biased...Smile
    I'm also glad Robert Blackman got rid of that god awful spandex uniform
    Not as glad as the cast I bet, heard those things packed an odor.
