The potential power of this technology has been used to create some real fun things but can also be used for some real nasty things what do you think.

The imagery is good on many but the voices are pretty terrible I find quite often. That Robocop one in particular has got terrible dialogue for Murphy/Arnie; it's like he's a teenager doing the voiceover!

TBH as questionable as this tech is for making fake vids for propaganda etc I reckon soon enough tech will also be good enough to spot fakes as well. They look good from a distance but once something comes along to properly analyse and take this vids apart it'll loose the appeal.

The deep fake technology, like all technology, has the potential to be used for harm. While yes it could be used to damage people's reputations once it gets to a stage where it is advanced enough, I prefer to think about the positives that such technology can bring. For example, we would have the opportunity to see deceased actors make small appearances in movies or just putting actors into movies where they obviously don't belong, which is what we see a lot of today. (I rather enjoy the back to the future ones!)

I do think it is likely that deep fake technology will only improve, however, I also believe advancements will be made to make it easier to detect the technology to prevent any nefarious uses. (i.e. politics)

Personally I wouldn't mind seeing some deceased actors make short little appearances in movies, but I know everyone doesn't feel that way. (With the appropriate permission from the family of course!)

A technology to fake voices won't take long and in a world we can share information in seconds before someone can figure out that it is fake the damage is already done.

These aren't bad deepfakes, but usually there are certain "tells" that give these away, like odd lighting or subtle distortions where the overlaid image doesn't quite fit the underlying image perfectly. That said, many people are easily convinced by far weaker evidence, and even proving something is a fake is not enough to convince people of something they don't want to believe. As with any tech, there is always the potential to misuse it, and this is just the latest tool that could be abused by con artists.

The biggest possibility this can cause harm in my mind is - that it gives the already large crowd of 'all the media/people/politicians always lie!' - ammo to ignore any visual evidence at all, because it might be a deep fake. "That politician never said that - thats a deepfake!", "That cop never shot the protestor, thats clearly a deepfake - prove that it is not fake!". Or anyone can claim "That was not me, four years ago with those three prostitutes, someone deep faked it." Fill in whatever scenario you like. Yeah, it will be possible to detect deepfakes, but you can't ever prove a negative. You won't ever be able to 'prove' to doubter that something is NOT fake. Heck, that is already a problem, just think of the moon landings were faked, crowd.

The was a good show on the BBC last year where a shady group of UK/USA spies were creating fake CCTV etc to get people found guilty when on trial. They weren't actually making things up but "creating" a video to show evidence of what they knew actually had occurred. Like if they knew a criminal met a person but there was no CCTV, they created fake CCTV to use as evidence.
Interesting idea as they were not trying to frame and innocent person, but their motives and tactics were still questionable.

Deepfakes could end up the same potentially.

While any advancement in technology can be used for "evil" although given Human nature its likely inevitable. Its also been shown to create some funny and quirky videos like the Teal'c and Master Bra'tac doing Video killed the Radio Star duet (hilarious btw!). As we progress as a society there will always be those who seek to subvert and use our own advancements against their fellow man for a variety of reasons.

Look at how warfare has changed over the last 100 years. In 1917 it took nearly half a million men to secure 5 miles of mud (Battle of Passchendaele) and then in the 1940's we learned to split the atom and the death toll from such weapons was obscene. Modern Warfare is mostly conducted through cyber attacks, rooms full of tech wizards fighting their counterparts all around the world. While traditional warfare is still very much prevelant (boots on the ground style combat) and will always have a presence.

Its likely that DeepFake tech will be co-opted into military strategy and likely already has, it has the potential to create fake videos of world leaders doing something to change a political narrative. That is a very dangerous game to play, but we're likely to nearly destroy our race before we learn to better ourselves.
