And who is it controlling the Andorians and Orions I suspect given that it was a trading town that we may be looking at some form of evolved Ferengi? But why hide them behind drones might be to may make you think towards the obvious when its indeed someone else.

I find The Burn to be rather curious, whoever or whatever did it pretty much crippled the Galaxy, depleting a valuable resource and bringing interstellar travel to a near halt, kinda makes things easy for conquest? I'm curious about the other Galactic Powers as well, such as the Dominion, Borg etc.

Wasn't a bad first episode. But I just hope they don't take another 2 episodes to find out where Discovery is and begin covering ground on what exactly happend with Federation and status of current galactic powers.

Interested to see what's on next, not a bad first episode. I think I also prefer Michael Burnham's character high 24x7.

All things have to end and I suppose that includes the dominant presence that was the federation in the galaxy. Am I happy about it? Absolutely not, but I can see why the writers chose to write it the way they did. I suppose they didn't think there would be much of a story for Season 3 if we were into the 3100s(?) with the federation seemingly have made even more advances in technology and becoming almost omnipotent.

We'll see about Book, I'm not too sure on his character yet, I still would appreciate a new classic Trek show set in a federation starship but nonetheless I'll grumble and continue to watch Star Trek: Discovery to kill an hour of my week, every week.

I liked the cat, the cat was cool. That is essentially it.

Well there have been four sense I like a lot but got disapointed:

1.) When she crashed into Books ship but survived
2.) When she crashed on the planet but survived
3.) When she was eaten but survived
4.) When she was drugged and was the first time in three years enjoyable.

That all Dilithium blow up is an interesting story, it will be interesting what "story" they are going to come up that will explain what happened.

    My $0.02

Activating heat shields and then ordering a full system reboot is the stupidest thing I've heard in a long time.
Burnham on drugs was really funny and it looked like she was having so much fun with it.
Whoever decided that the make up on the Andorians was good enough needs to have a word with themselves.
There was a Morn in the hunting group!
Putting the fate of the federation on the shoulders of the first person that came walking through the door claiming to be a starfleet officer shows that the guy in the federation office is incredibly naive.

Overall, I liked the episode and I'm looking forward to seeing what Discovery's story is as well as the other couple of federation ships that were mentioned to be flying around the sectors. I did get a bit of an Andromeda vibe from the apparent plot so I hope that they steer clear of rehashing that.

Well I quite enjoyed that - this is probably what Discovery should have been from the start, away from the established canon and standing now on its own 2 feet. If anything, this seems to be something of a soft reboot for the series and in much the same way as TNG & DS9 didn't properly hit the mark until their 3rd seasons, has Discovery now landed their shot? It's a promising start on the back of that episode and a lot of set up to be explained.

    So, my initial thoughts:

At the moment it seems safe to assume that the alongside the Federation, the Dominion and the various other galactic powers are just as crippled - given that no-one seems to have come along and conquered everything, Book's brief mention of fuel issues, that alternatives to warp drive are limited by their own issues and the implication that the subspace network is severely reduced, everyone must be in the same boat.

The wrecked Starfleet vessels show that design has evolved but remained similar to the original aesthetics, though it's hard to get a scale of the ships. Speaking of them - are the 2 Federation ships picked up by the station remnants of Starfleet or surviving vessels subsequently commandeered by parties unknown? And why do none of them visit the station? Sahil says he's been there for 40 years and his father was in the fleet, so someone, somewhere must know he's there.

Are there pockets of the Federation that still survive out there and hold onto their ideals? It's implied that almost the entire fleet was lost and whatever vessels that have survived or been subsequently built, coupled with the fuel crisis, there simply isn't enough of them to make any difference and they can't be everywhere at once, so it's essential travel and missions only.

Booker mentions the nearest natural wormhole being about 100 light years away - is this another nod to Bajor or have additional ones been discovered since?

I wasn't sure what to expect for this seasons opener. It was alright, as others have stated, I hope it doesn't take several more episodes before Burnham reconnects with Discovery. I also had hoped Discovery or the next Trek series (before Discovery started) would have been set further into the future from the start rather then where Discovery started. But now they get to take off and hopefully create something great going forward.

The part at the end with the one last (that we know of) unofficial Starfleet guy was the best part of the episode for me.

I really liked it! The effects were great, and all that future tech is really cool. The scene where they hit Burnham with that gas had me cracking up! Also, the final scene with Sahil was really emotional as well, props to the actor as you could see the emotion on his face when he finally got that commission.

Overall I'm liking this season so far, I hope to see more of this new universe and learn more about The Burn and the collapse of the Federation. I'm also hoping we see the rest of the Discovery crew sooner rather than later.

A little addition - the new title sequence has been shown off by CBS and it's kinda cool. It shows the older style hand phaser transitioning into a new design and it also has the Starfleet delta morphing into the new badge giving probably the clearest look at it to date.

This is a "clean" version of the titles as it doesn't contain any cast or crew names. The theme appears unchanged and the new logo appears at the end.

EDIT: They pulled it already to non-US folks, try this link instead - https://youtu.be/edHfsHcSLMc or this one https://intl.startrek.com/videos/sta...ive=All&page=1

    Well I really enjoyed that!

    1) References to ENT (Temporal War), DS9 (Solar Sails) and VOY (Quantum Slipstream) all rolled into it nicely!

    2) Book is an interesting character; it's a nice change that after all the disasters to have befallen the galaxy he just wants to save wildlife that is endangered. Not sure what species he is though, and the cat is an unusual one....is it real, a hologram, an android, or a shapeshifter? Who knows.

    3) Nice to handle a limited number of characters in the opening episode and gave SMG a change to do some proper acting on her own. The shootout when she was drugged was funky.

    4) A "Morn" appeared in the bad guys chasing them! What is his species?

    5) Mention of the Orions destroying subspace for 2LY's? A hint that someone tried to use Omega Particles to get around the dilithium issue? Nice little world building bit there.

    6) The Burn is a nice new idea, be interesting to see where that leads.

    7) As Romulan ships only use a singularity core i'm guessing they are still able to move at warp? But after their star was destroyed they probably still aren't a major power anymore; we kinda know that from Picard already.

    Looking forward to next week.

Morn's species are the Lurians. And it was the Gorn that blew up subspace (or whatever else it was they did), not the Orions.

Given that no mention is made of them, it seems likely they've not seized on the issues or established themselves as any sort of threat or successor state since the burn occurred. The whole artificial black hole tech they have has never really been explained in great detail - does it require dilithium in some fashion to be created or somehow maintained? Is dilithium required to focus the energy for the warp engines in the same way as a warp core does? Then there's the big question - if it doesn't need it at all, why didn't the Federation or anyone else immediately switch to this tech after the burn?

But... dilithium isn't a fuel or a power source. Dilithium is a crystal that acts as a control rod and tunes plasma energy from the matter / anti-matter reaction. The actual fuel is duterium.

.... and they have fusion reactors. They're inefficient but work, they're already used for supplementary power in starships. They don't use them for warp generation because they'd have to be very large, but building starships large enough for them to work would be a lot easier in that generation.

.... and planets don't use antimatter reactors in general, they use fusion, they'd be perfectly fine as long as they can grow their own food.

.... space stations don't use antimatter reactors either, they also use fusion. Maybe one or two use antimatter but not in general.

I'm confused as to how this could destroy the Federation. Am I over-thinking this? Probably.

I'm watching this season even though I hate the show because I really do want it to improve and hope it does.

I've seen it suggested that with all the dilithium suddenly going pop any ship with an operational M-AM core would have suffered a pretty catastrophic loss of reaction control; I imagine that a great many active vessels simply got blown to pieces without warning.
Potentially all warp capable groups could have lost their entire fleets within minutes without warning.

Not only that, but ships going boom close to stations or while docked to them isn't going to help matters either. And if you've suddenly gone from having thousands of ships to a few dozen in the blink of an eye alongside the loss of millions of crew, civilians etc, it's certainly not going to be possible to just pick up the pieces and carry on as normal the next day. It's going to cause havoc with day to day life and operations no matter how good a shape the rest of the organisation is. They and the other major powers simply no longer have the necessary manpower and equipment to maintain it.

Shipyards especially and the larger/more remote stations are likely to keep supplies of dilithium on hand for ships as needed and what about planetary storage facilities, to say nothing of those that have dllithium naturally in mines? There could be entire planets wrecked as the result of the explosion and the population wiped out in mere minutes.

There's also a mention by Booker when he gives Burnham his comm device that it can access the remaining subspace channels, implying that the network has taken considerable damage as well.
