I stopped playing regularly a very long time ago, mostly because of the repitition and constant grind. I'd play if there were a group of people here in the UFP who wanted to run an event, as really the event staff here in the UFP really do their very best to take the tired and depressing content the game offers and make something interesting for the gamers here in the community.
Then just taking this opportunity to plug the weekly TFO runs and the upcoming Mirror Universe themed event Smile Solace generally runs these and they are good fun with some good natured banter on TeamSpeak too. We had a hide and seek event before last UFPac and that was really entertaining too. (Just as added info: they are generally pretty small, with between 5 and 7 people, but the more the merrier)

Like others said, sometimes you just need to consider taking a break. Maybe that means playing something other than STO, or maybe just playing STO in a different way than your "usual" grind.

For me, there are days where I just pop on long enough to run the daily and that is it, other days I might run random TFOs, another day I might shoot for DPS parsing, or running old episodes on a new toon.

I also run several toons set up with different careers, ship types and build types that I switch between. Tackling the same content from a completely different build perspective can help keep things feeling a little fresher too.

If none of that helps, try taking a break from the game for a while and come back to it later. As for the pricetags, Cryptic, like any other game company out there, is always throwing new paid items to make money, but unlike many other games the game is playable at all levels without pay-to-win barriers which I greatly appreciate. Missing an event is really not going to be the end of the world either. Most event prizes are forgettable and the few that are "must have" really only matter if your ambition is to be the absolute top of the dps charts (which means talking your buddies into a nannied run to pull unrealistic numbers). There are MANY other ways to play the game besides parsing DPS.

Cryptic also seems to have struggled with COVID work arrangements and the "year of Klingon" focus this year has meant a good chunk of their content development bandwidth is being sunk into rebuilding old intro episodes rather than being purely focused on new, original storylines.

As I understand it, the game is coded like spaghetti and the current team of devs don't fully understand it as it contains a lot of legacy code from the original team. The only real way at this stage to fix all that would be to essentially scrap the existing client, move to a new engine and rebuild the entire game from scratch.
This is exactly what needs to happen. Yes, we would loose everything we've worked for in the current game, but we really could use a brand new STAR TREK game with a whole new concept. I think of all the latest sci-fi and space sim games that have been recently coming out or been in development. Take any of those or a mixture of several of them and apply a Star Trek IP to it, and we've got a game that may allow us to REALLY explore an ever changing universe as well as immerse ourselves into the Trek "world'.

Create your character and determine what career path you want (Federation, Klingon, Romulan, or maybe just a mercenary with no affiliation).
Start small, build a ship (similar to STO's ship designer), rank up, command/build a larger ship, and go into the stars.

Go where no man (or woman) has gone before.

Dont let Cryptic handle it though. Keep this game going and have Amazon build their own Star Trek game like what they're doing with Lord of the Rings. Both games can be around and Cryptic doesn't get to taint a new game.

No question the game is very repetitive, winter event, summer event, omega particle event, a few new story missions and STOs each year.

But speaking only for myself, I have a hard time calling this game a "money grab." In fact, I find it to be one of the most generous free to play games you can find. They give away multiple free t6 ships every year, free omega upgrades, all new story content is always free (no dlc or expansions to buy) and it is so easy to get and refine dilithuim which you can then easily sell for zen especially if you wait for best times of year to sell, like during phoenix box weeks. And recently they gave away 1000 free lobi allowing me to get some of the really good lobi consoles and ba'ul weapon set.

I have been completely f2p since launch, first on PC and now on xbox. I honestly don't think I have spent more than $5 real money on this game in ten years yet I still have t6 fleet Gagarin ship with all epic fully upgraded end-game gear plus nearly 500,000 refined DL, 6,000 Zen and 120,000,000 EC just sitting in my assets waiting for the next thing to "buy" without using any real money.

Yes, it is boring to do the same events every year and the same easy pve queues over and over and over for every new event but I feel like I really can't ask for too much from a game that I literally spend no money on but still have all best in slot end game gear. Whatever new story they put out each year is fun to play and if the rewards are good I will log in daily to do an event then go back to whatever other games I'm currently playing.

I think the real problem is the end game content is so easy to do with any PUG, it doesn't encourage fleets to work together on end game content like raids in other mmos. We have great people in this fleet but this is such a solo oriented game.

That's the old cycle of burnout in there, but Cryptic are making ever more obvious grabs for cash nowadays and more and more content is hiding behind a paywall, with the stuff that isn't taking months at a time to get there. I've not really classed the endless string of events as content for some time now and they've been going on for far too long now regardless. Long gone are the days when you had dozens of ships sitting in sector base, lined up and ready to join the new featured episode the moment it went live. Remember those days? We got 1 a week instead of 1 or 2 every 6 months or so.

I've got a lifetime sub from the day they first became available, but after an uninstall and another jump back in to look at the upgrade tokens, there's nothing there now encouraging me to go back in again. It's Trek yes, but even that shine has long since worn off for me. STO needs a big injection of something to get it revitalised, especially since most of the older existing content is all but ignored these days, but I feel that the majority of the player base goodwill has long been running dry and it's now powered through sheer force of will and luck. But even that will get tapped out at some point, then there's nothing left.

As I understand it, the game is coded like spaghetti and the current team of devs don't fully understand it as it contains a lot of legacy code from the original team. The only real way at this stage to fix all that would be to essentially scrap the existing client, move to a new engine and rebuild the entire game from scratch.
    Trouble is it's a catch 22

They need the whales for money to even consider STO 2...but making STO 2 will likely drive away the whales because everything they spent money on will likely be gone

So they're probably content with just doing what they're doing and milking the player base

    - - - Updated - - -

Just take long breaks. I've been doing that for 10 years and helps me still log into STO after all this time.
Problem is I end up missing stuff I want and it comes with a massive price tag in Mudd's Market now...like I took a break in AoY and here I am regretting I missed the Kelvin Admiral unform and now even on sale it costs almost half as much as a T6 ship

Like right now all I do is log on to do the synth event because I like the set...I guess all I can do is hope they don't launch any more really interesting things I'd want so I can take a break till december

I just finally got caught up on all of the last 3 years worth of content on the PC Side of things.

Now I find myself sad because I know that it's going to be a long slow dribble of content from here on out. I will say that the new Klingon Episodes were very well done. I can't wait to see where the story goes from here.

I've got some Rep Grinding to do and I'll probably pop in long enough to do the events. I did roll a Klingon Toon so I can finally go through their leveling experience. But I'm more than likely going to take a short break. WoW Shadowlands is coming out and I have a feeling it's going to take a lot of my attention.

WoW a 15 year old game that isn't as impressive visually as STO is still faring better. I think Cryptic needs to take some pages from Blizzards Playbook

There's some good stuff to be had out of each reputation. More fun if you do it with somebody or someone. I personally play every now and then but mostly login for the Division Operation side of things.

WoW a 15 year old game that isn't as impressive visually as STO is still faring better. I think Cryptic needs to take some pages from Blizzards Playbook
I see you're from US and Blizzard's regional account change can be a pain, but UFPlanets Community do play WoW regularly on EU-Magtheridon. Ofcourse in WoW our guild name doesn't go by UFP for obvious reasons xD

This sounds like a classic case of burnout of STO. I've recently gone through this, my view would be to take a break and pop during special events and play once a day.
Good tooltip, got to at least come back for the account unlocks, otherwise your toons missout...

This. It's what I do Smile
Me too, but you have to admit they did fix or resolve the rubberbanding issue. At least from my point of view I can now play on Nimbus, Dyson ground or Kobali ground flawlessly whereas before I was timelooping every 5 seconds... so that has garnered more of my attention to enjoy some ground action and capture point fun.
