Clearly my attempts at arguing for alternate perspectives on this topic are backfiring spectacularly and are being interpreted wildly differently than how I intended. Please know I mean no disrespect for anyone, and I'm shutting up now.

I think it's pretty safe to say that everyone has a very different view on how STO should be managed and the gaming industry as a whole - which is the amazingly large rabbit-hole this conversation has fallen down.

I tend to agree with the viewpoint expressed by Three that it is phenomenally bizzare in the extreme for a crew of hardened Klingon warriors serving in the Klingon Defence Force to be flying around in a luxurious Galaxy Glass from the Federation. The entire concept of STO requires a bit of suspension of your disbelief factor - again as Three expressed.

We have a universe filled with Fleet Admirals, Dahar Masters, and whatever the Dominion equivelent is (I've not bothered to level a Dom toon so I dont' care) running around in single ships - not commanding fleets as we were promised TEN YEARS AGO - being given orders by Commanders, Captains, Sub-Commanders and whoever else happens to pass by. STO is not a realistic interpretation of a real life organisation, neither is it an accurate interpretation of the Star Trek universe either. It's a game, designed to have the player be the 'hero' all the time and therefore have to do everything, without the hassle of the reality that a Fleet Admiral would be sat in an office all day.

I also understand, because I dwell in the real world, that corporations need to make money. If a product line is not producing enough money to justify its expenses, it is quickly axed to save on losses. This applies from cars to handbags to socks. Its capitalism at its finest - survival of the fittest. Thusly, STO is a corporate product, whether we like it or not. Cryptic have a financial investment in maintaining the very expensive servers, staff and paying the likely absorbetant IP fee to CBS. Therefore, they need to see a return on that investment beyond merely pleasing some fan-bois. If that means churning out a "quick win" for raising money for enabling cross-faction play on some of their investments, then so be it. Maybe there are players out there who want to play as a KDF who stole a Defiant class?

As for comparing WoW to STO... it's like comparing apples to oranges. Both are very different games, managed by very different companies, with very different outlooks. On the whole, WoW has done very well maintaining its original P2P concept that it started out with oh so long ago, whereas SWTOR and STO went F2P to suck in the players. Neither is wrong.

I think my view on this whole thing is it comes down to individual circumstances.

Do I think that the KDF side was very unloved by Cryptic for quite some time? Yes. Has the FED side had more time-investment? Yes. Do I therefore believe that Klingons are, to quote Admiral Cartwright; "the alien trash of the galaxy"? No. You just have to play them differently, that's all. Smile

If STO were to go back to a sub model they'd have to offer more, they'd have to be bigger. Right now there are only really two MMORPGs that are prospering with a sub system still, World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy XIV. Both are big games and developed by big companies

If you took everything in the last year or more, that content could equal the size of one major patch for a game like WoW or XIV. There is just no way current day STO could come close to surviving on a sub system...and I doubt it would help them much if they went the SWTOR (EA) route of F2P with a sub option, where the F2P option can be quite restrictive.

TBH if returning to a Sub-Based system got us more content. I'd gladly re-sub. I'm sure a lot of us would. I don't think it has ever been a lack of desire for the player base to financially support the game. It's the fact they expect us to do it via lockboxes and expensive bundles.
