Just a table showing the ranks ilvl and the valour upgrade costs for reference. The amount needed for each rank remains at a fixed level and is earned either from completing callings (35 for a standard, 50 for an epic) or running a mythic dungeon which awards a fixed 135 valour regardless of what level it is. You also need to complete each of the 8 dungeons at level 5, 10 and 15 to completely unlock the path to rank 12. The added caveat to this is that simply finishing it doesn't count, it also has to be within the time limit.
While it may cost more in the long term, running the M0 instances, myself being a non-raider, tends to get you what you're after or need item-wise with less of a headache. I'm currently halfway there at level 5, though I've been deliberately avoiding De Other Side.

The Valor system is really an awesome they've launched. But like you said, it's amazing for non-raiders, though I think I do want to take some time to achieve it due to the fact you unlock the capability to upgrade gear /account-wide/. That's what makes it huge.
However on characters which I'm raiding on currently, getting to 207 is easier and the main upgrade criteria of 213 above is the main challenge I feel, Mythic key 15 on all Shadowlands Dungeons. This can get quite tricky!
