Well, one idea that kind of wooshed through my mind was spawned from the current almost finished one.

    Idea

We could have the lance be deactivated or destroyed 1 or 2 seconds after it activated, so a fraction of the power did hit the wormhole. Though the wormhole is still there, and stable(ish?) the Ares could be sent through to check the consequences the wormhole suffered, and what, if any, effects it all had on the other side of the wormhole. From there the sky (or space to be exact Big Grin) would kind of be the limit. We could check up on the Dominion, or we could check out the part of the Gamma quadrant that's not been explored yet nor claimed by the Dominion. Or we could
    Code:
    [fill in anything here]

    Idea

Whatever the mission turns out to be i'd like to pick up on part of my posts that preceded Schrit and Danre getting on board the USS Ares. It's the part where Schrit has a visit from Commodore Shirt B Red to personally inform him of his new posting on the Ares. One of the things he mentions is the intent (in fact its the Commodore's assignment) to have fightercraft more widely adopted within the fleet, develop SOP's and step up development of fightercraft, tactics and whatnot. He also mentions there is some opposition to the use of fightercraft and even the concept of Starfleet vessels carrying craft specifically designed for the purpose of combat, like fighter/attack craft.

    Maquis

I'd like to spin a (side) tale from that with the commodore contacting Schrit and assigning Schrit to assess the fighters on the Ares, the tactics and operational procedures on the Ares and the progress of the integration of the Squadron into standard operating procedures by the USS Ares and its (command)crew. Schrit can then, as a side mission, work up a report concluding that the Squadron isn't integrated at all, and at best considered another weapon system at the disposal of the CO, like quantum torpedoes or phasers. From there a large numer of directions to go in open up for the squadron as a whole, Schrit as a fighter pilot and for interesting interactions with the XO, CO, the Helm officers, and Chief Tactical officer.

As for the chapter three story ideas, the one i mentioned in the beginning of this post was one that had popped through my head at one point real fleetingly. I'll give it some thought and splash down an idea (or a couple) in this thread before monday morning!

    Stay safe and Stay happy!

(p.s.; the post i mentioned from before Schrit came to the Ares is this one

Ok, have to admit, the ideas did not flow as richly as i'd thought they would, but one idea did kind of stick and decided it wasn't going to leave me alone until i'd floated it here before going to sleep.

One of the crew, preferably one with a heritage that comes from a lesser known species or world, is called upon to return home for something that is threatening to the race/species/homeworld/culture or something. Having ties to the Federation, or for some reason anyway, The United Federation of Planets puts pressure from up high to insist on having the USS Ares take back this member of the crew to his home world/culture and have the Ambassador extend an offer of assistance from the Federation with whatever the problem (is perceived to be or is disguised as)being.

We could then get completely absorbed and involved in what's really happening (because during the time spent as member of our crew the crewmember has come to at least respect the Federation to some level and therefore shares what's really going on and asks us to help him/her/it/they/+/2215)

Long held beliefs could be found completely based on myth, fables and untruth.

Well, and so on and so forth, i think you get the picture i'm painting.

Personal i've allways been very curious about the Farasians and Caitians....

Without giving any big surprises out, can we hear what the general idea of the overall story and where it is headed?

After the last Dorvan mission, I don't really have a good idea of what the ARES overall mission is supposed to be.

I do have an end goal for this.

Main story is going to be Exploration. Seeing what is out there, making friends.

When ARES first headed off from DS9, it seemed we were doing a Post-War assessment and reconstruction of the local sector colonies.

While writing and reading (other posts), it felt like there was a lot of excitement and variety in that overarching mission. I believe it came from the, lack of a better term, human-level. The humanity of it and emotionally feeling and understanding of the situations we created.

Exploration is fine, but where are we exploring? Timeline-wise, the Dominion War is still fresh in many people's minds (along with any scars or trauma from it). Heading out to deep deep space feels a bit... off for me during the current setting we have been in.

This is only my perspective and opinion, but I think we have barely touched upon this aspect in our ARES project. Yet, I believe if we frame this well, we can inspire more members to write and continue on with their current characters.

I thought the whole mission was supposed to be Exploration, which is why my characte joined the Ares mission - to kind of get away from war and see the galaxy, which is what he signed up for many years ago.

But is there a way to blend both of those things? Exploration and post-war assessment, reconstruction?

I suppose we have to define what "deep, deep space is," which is hard to do post-Kirk. Is that beyond the far Cardassian border in the Alpha Quadrant? Or better yet, the unexplored regions of the Gamma Quadrant? The Dominion hindered any real exploration of the Gamma Quadrant, so I would suggest we get orders to head out that way. We could have orders to explore, while doing post war assessments on the state on Dominion territory.

I think the Gamma Quadrant opens up a rich storytelling environment, because you can invent new aliens and worlds but you're close enough to the Alpha Quadrant to zoom home and do Federation based stories.

Strictly off the top of my head, here is a mission idea:

DEEP SPACE 13 - Starfleet wants to install a new planet based Starbase in the Gamma Quadrant, in order to establish a permanent footprint in the Gamma Quadrant. A scout ship has found what it believes to be a suitable planet in an inhabited system. The aliens are former Dominion members previously unknown and non-warp capable.

    The Ares must:

    1) Further investigate the suitability of the planet, which has a thin atmosphere, cold, rocky background, and no life. Its a Mars type planet. Engineering would have to assess the feasability of building the starbase there. (SCIENCE & ENGINEERING)

    2) Negotiate a deal with the resident aliens for use of the other planet in their system (DIPLOMACY)

    3) Discover and fend off a plot to sabatage the whole thing by another Alpha Quadrant race (Romulans maybe?) who want to prevent the Federation from gaining an advantage in another Quadrant (SECURITY)

    4) Arrange for the treatment of a medical mystery on the planet. The treatment is a goodwill offering to help negotations, but it is also serving the purpose of possibly assessing whether or not this new race was engineered or tinkered with by the Dominion like the Jem Hadar or Vorta. (MEDICAL)

I think much of the side stories here could be incorporated no matter what. I do like the idea of the integration of fighters being a major issue. I could see where my character would be on the side of that, advocating real people with real intelligence at the trigger, rather than bombarding things from orbit.

Although, i think we should probably leave the wormhole alone for now, the idea of the lance showing up at a later time to threaten it would be great if we're on the other side of the wormhole!

(...)Timeline-wise, the Dominion War is still fresh in many people's minds (along with any scars or trauma from it). Heading out to deep deep space feels a bit... off for me during the current setting we have been in.
I've been giving this some thought and did some checking. As i understand it the USS Ares's mission, the first one, started 6 years after the Dominion war ended. I'm not really sure over what timespan the Ares's missions played out but i'm assuming it can't be more than one or two years. This gives us a current time of about seven to eight years after the end of the Dominion war and two to four years after Shinzon's coup and attempt at starting a war with the Federation.

So the concerns Silynn raises have merit given the Ares is souvereign class, the Federation's latest and greatest class of ships of which, i suppose, not very many were built yet during a post war era where much resources would have been allocated to rebuilding and relief efforts instead of massive top of the line long range exploration Starships. The Shinzon incident has shown that the Romulan Empire has regained the capability to direct resources to developing and building massive battleships and potentially has the ability to fight a war with the Federation. With the Federation undoubtedly going all out to help the Cardassians after the war and with very little information on the Klingon's state of the Empire, a resource like the Ares might be considered to valuable and kept within short distance of the Federation's core.

On the other hand the Nemesis incident, and the behaviour and mood of the Enterprise-E's crew before it, also seem to indicate that the Dominion war is a closed chapter, on a Federation wide galactic scale. Ofcourse there will be a lot of officers still dealing with their PTSD or other problems that are part of the war's fallout and surely there are planets or regions where the war's damage have not been fully repaired, but for the overal big picture the time would be right for the Federation to turn their attention outwards, and for Starfleet to be seen to go back to their core mission of exploration.

This is only my perspective and opinion, but I think we have barely touched upon this aspect in our ARES project. Yet, I believe if we frame this well, we can inspire more members to write and continue on with their current characters.
I get what you mean and i do agree up to a point, in that it is a topic which few if any rp's so far have covered in any significant way. I do think though that, again considering the Ares being a souvereign class, that by the time we're in (6 to 8 years after the war) most of the post war assesments have been completed and rebuilding efforts have been handed over to the less prominent ships and crews. A resource like the Ares would be more likely be used in patrolling the borders, kept close to the Federation's core in case they're needed, or in prestige projects showing the people things are getting back to normal.

Maybe with that in mind it could be a good idea to go a completely different direction than we've been thinking in and get away from anything and everything that's been dealt with in Star Trek canon, bringing along our scarred crewmembers and the issues that might come from them. I've been taking a look at the map and was, again as i've had this look at that map a few times over the years, struck by what i think is an oddity.

The Alpha quadrant, supposedly "our" home quadrant, is the least explored and known part of the map. There's no canon explaination for this that i know of and it seems like an opportunity for opening up an entire new era for the Federation, Starfleet and little old us.

Final part of the mission, along with a small JP post with Welsch is up now.

Gonna give this a few days to allow myself to come up with an idea as to how this battle will go.

    Little bit of an update:
We'll split the three up, with Thane taking Krass to the brig, Van heading to prep the fighters(this is so DeuZige can sink his teeth into the fighters. LOL) & Max, heading to the bridge, likely cursing his face off.

Sounds good to me! I've got the beginning of the start of the formation of an idea floating around in the vast open space that is my brain for Danre pitching an idea to either the Cap, or number one too.

Anyway, just to have it said in case someone doubted it: I'm still enjoyinh this and loving it!

Well, i was actually thinking that Danre, having nothing better to do and still angry for being ignored and forced to use elaborate measures to get a message to an officer, went on to fiddle with some software, of a certain type of fighter, using the detection methods he mentioned in his message to Cap, to create a missile guidance system that uses particle cloud attraction to guide the missile to its target.......

But i'm good with your idea too!

Update: Currently working on the battle scene. A few things might change since I got some personal news from Welsch(Which I'll not go into detail). Hopefully, not much. Once all the pieces drop into place, we SHOULD......SHOULD......be ready to move on.....I HOPE.
