I've never bothered to buy any promo boxes personally, and only really have popped any gamble boxes at all just a few times to get some lobi on hand. If Cryptic had some sort of pity mechanism built into the algorithm it might be worth trying your hand at it every now and then because eventually you'd be assured of a payoff. Unfortunately based on all the testing various people have tried, it looks like a straight RNG table draw every time, so if you have a particularly bad luck streak you might pop hundreds, even thousands of boxes and not draw a T6 ship.

At the end of the day Cryptic is a business, and players that do play these gamble boxes are the ones that make it possible for F2P play for the masses. That said, if they reworked the RNG on these to add even a small pity modifier, that would likely improve supply and help with the massive EC inflation on the exchange market that we have today, which in turn would relieve some of the need for a dilithium sink since people wouldn't need to flip dilithium for lockbox keys as aggresively to sell to grind out a 1b+ EC purchase for the premium stuff.

Depending on the ship...maybe. There is that pesky 2 Bn EC cap per character that is keeping things on that side in check...for now....

While I own a few promo/lockbox ships, and leaving aside the recent event freebie, they all came from the exchange with one exception. The only ship I've ever got from a box itself was the Kelvin Connie. I'd been toying with getting off the exchange as per the norm and believe it was box 24 it dropped on. Only reason I was opening boxes at all was because I'd been after a bit of lobi.
