    USS Endurance
    Mission Log, 99478.19, Caldik System

    FAB spacer small

The USS Endurance has arrived at the edge of the Caldik system.

The systems 3rd Planet creatively named Caldik 3. The USS Brisbane found the planet had a breathable atmosphere thanks to the algae which dominated the many lakes and oceans on the planet producing oxygen as a byproduct of photosynthesis. The Brisbane noted that while the waters contained minor plant life, the land was almost completely barren apart from some shrubbery. The land also had many sprawling cave systems which were believed to be the remains of massive lava veins during the planets early life.

Caldik 3 had a single inhospitable moon named Caldik 3b. Here the Brisbane discovered a small temple or shrine located in the middle of a massive crater, the building itself had almost been completely destroyed by what appeared to be micrometeor strikes, sun exposure and what was theorised to be some kind of plasma burns on the remaining pillars. The buildings disrepair allowed for a direct view inside where optics and scans found an altar of some kind with something metallic set in stone.

At this point in the survey, the Brisbane was recalled to reinforce Taskforce 18 in preparation for war.

Now the USS Endurance and USS Verity seek to uncover these artifacts 8 years after the Brisbane's initial discovery. In that time the system has been largely left alone by Starfleet and its allies. Since then the Cardik 3b relic site has been buried deep under moon rock due to an almost cataclysmic impact.

The Verity, with its more advanced science labs, has been sent to a different system with a similar artifact while the Endurance, with its more powerful sensor suite, can hopefully scan through the layers of rock covering the artifact.

    Begin Captains Mission log:

The Endurance has arrived in the Caldik system.

I have spent much of the trip here reading up on the Brisbanes survey log and Conferring with Commander Rhodes on the mission details.

I have ordered Mr Yaw to put us in geosynchronous orbit of the artifact and upon suggesting by my science officer Mr Quell have launched probs to collect data on the system to see if anything has changed since the last time Starfleet was here.

    Captain's Log

Captain's Log, Stardate 58879.2. We have reached the Blue Horizon system.

After a skipped maintenance cycle and multiple days spent far above recommended cruise velocity, the Engineering staff will have to perform maintenance to the warp coils before we are able to go to warp speed again. I hope they are able to complete their maintenance before the science team completes their survey of the strange object we have come to survey in order to avoid delays. Unfortunately, I do not have full confidence in our Engineering officers.

We are proceeding with our investigation as planned.

Martin stepped onto the bridge. As he walked toward the center, Kara stood up from the captain's chair and called, "Captain on deck!" Martin faced toward the Vulcan science officer and asked in a demanding voice, "Mr. Noril, your report on the artifact and the situation." The Vulcan began speaking.

"Yes, Captain. In total, the Blue Horizon system includes 4 planets and 13 planetoids. All of the planets and planetoids in the system are incapable of housing higher life-forms, except-" The Captain shot a look at Noril. "Commander." Noril nodded apologetically and continued.

"The artifact is located on Blue Horizon III. The Brisbane's preliminary survey has classified it as a Class D uninhabitable planet, which is wholly unremarkable, except for one fascinating feature. Within a crater on the planet's surface, the Brisbane found strangely organised material patterns which usually refer to artificial construction. The Brisbane also noted a metallic object near the patterns, similar to one found in the Caldik system. However, they were unable to investigate the site further."

Commander Rhodes stroked his chin and looked at Tosian. "Can we get scans on the object and site that Mr. Noril mentioned from here, Commander?"

The Andorian tapped away at his console, which responded with a strained beep. He shook his head. "No, Captain. I can confirm the patterns still exist on the planet, but I am unable to get detailed readings."

The Captain sat down in his chair and said, "Tsk. Well then, Ensign. Take us into standard orbit over Blue Horizon III. Synchronous over the relic site. Full impulse."

Ensign Fletcher entered the course on the conn and responded, "Aye, sir. Course laid in."

Martin cocked his head slightly and said, "Engage."

    USS Verity

The main science console beeped and Lieutenant Commander Noril turned his attention to it. He took a few minutes to read the incoming messages.

While the Science Officer was occupied with messages from his staff, the Captain and his First Officer were discussing various options for their investigation of the artifact. After Martin gave his idea of simply transferring all non-essential power to the sensors to cut through the surrounding interference, Kara shook her head and said, "That wouldn't work. The Verity's sensor suite just isn't powerful enough to get any meaningful data from here." Martin leaned his head back for a moment as he sighed. "Any other options, Commander?"

Kara cocked her head aside in thought for a moment and offered, "A science team on the ground. We send a shuttle down and they get as much data as they can with their tricorders. Maybe even take some samples. Not perfect, but right now, I think it's the best-"

The Vulcan science officer suddenly turned around and said, "That would be inadvisable, sir. It is possible that the interference concealing the site from our scanners may be hiding radiation or other hazards. Following that, it would be illogical to endanger crewmen while other possibilities have not yet been exhausted." Kara's gaze turned colder as she opened her mouth to start speaking, but she was cut off by Martin, who shot a look at Kara and began speaking instead.

"Commander, what does the hourly report say?" The Vulcan read from his console. "All stations report no change in the interference, Captain. In the past day we've been here, the only new thing we have found is a large object not mentioned in the Brisbane's log. However, it is likely to simply be extra matter from something like an asteroid which has landed on the planet."

Noril looked up from the console. "However, I have spoken with the science team leads. Essentially, we keep catching glimpses of the data we could be receiving without the interference. This suggests our science labs, which are one of the more advanced in Starfleet, could easily find useful information from the artifact. That is, if our sensors could actually scan it."

Martin thanked Commander Noril and turned toward the Andorian. "Commander Tosian. Have you been able to boost our sensor output?" The Ops officer shook his head in response and the Captain could not help but to notice Tosian's antennae twitched slightly. "If Starfleet plans to send us on more scientific missions, they ought to implement the sensor upgrade we're overdue on. I've already done all I could to increase our sensor capability. Of course, if I had more and better-trained staff.." Tosian leaned his head to the side and smiled slightly. In response, Martin gave a dismissive wave and said, "Thank you, Commander."

He walked back to the center of the bridge and started considering other options when his thoughts were interrupted by Kara, whose expression had mellowed. "Well, what about trying to pull the artifact itself to the ship? We could use the tractor beam and put something like a modified medical forcefield around it to avoid any danger from possible hazards. Our science lab could pull all the information they like in that case. Oh, and the lab could determine the presence of any hazards from scans of the artifact. If they find nothing.."

Martin finished her thought, "We can send teams down there to investigate the site." Kara nodded happily, "Exactly." Commander Rhodes stroked his chin and then sat down with a grin. "Excellent idea, Number One." He pressed a button on the panel next to the captain's chair and a slightly exasperated male voice sounded over the intercom. "You've got Engineering." Martin leaned back in his chair and almost rolled his eyes before remembering he was the Captain. "God, this "setting a good example" thing really is annoying sometimes, isn't it?", he thought. "Mr. Dalton. Put the warp core maintenance on hold. I need power to the tractor beams. Preferably now." "But we're already halfway into the warp core! Where's this coming from? What's the rush? Look, just give us-"

Martin mustered his most authoritative voice and cut off the Chief Engineer. "Enough, Mr. Dalton. I requested your presence on the bridge today and you would know where this is coming from if you had done as I requested. Getting power to the tractor beams is mission critical. This is not another request." There was silence over the comms for a few seconds, followed by a slightly quiet "Aye, Commander."

Martin sighed, then looked at Kara and said, "Number One? Go to Main Engineering and make sure they've actually started work, please. Actually, you can supervise them. Oh, and go through Sick Bay on the way and ask Rutezo if the force field's achievable."

Kara stood up, smiled and said, "My pleasure, sir."

Our efforts to investigate the strange artifact on Blue Horizon III are continuing. The plan proposed by Commander Allen is in motion and our Engineering staff is preparing to provide power to the tractor beam. However, next to this progress, I have just received a piece of extremely worrying news.

In a short break through the interference, the Verity's sensors have confirmed the large piece of debris on the surface as the husk of a Cardassian starship, Galor-class. What's more, the sensors were unable to detect any massive damage to the Cardassian ship that would have forced them to land.

Considering this information.. I would be very hard-pressed to believe that the connection between the Cardassian wreck and the relic is mere coincidence. I have ordered the ship to stand at Yellow Alert.

We will have to be very cautious when prodding the relic which likely brought down a Cardassian warship with our tractor beam. Hmph. This way, the idea sounds almost foolish.

Martin gave a slight jolt and the PADD detailing the crashed Cardassian ship almost slipped out of his hand as a voice came through his communicator. "Rutezo to Rhodes. We're all set up down here. Advise we do this quickly, Commander. The modifications to the field are making it unstable and I don't know how long we can keep it. Martin tapped his combadge and responded quickly. "Got it, Doctor. We'll try to speed it up." He stood up from his chair and walked out of the Ready Room onto the Bridge.

Kara rose from the captain's chair and nodded at Martin as he walked in. "Nothing to report, Captain. No further change in readings." Martin nodded back to her and raised an eyebrow in surprise as his eyes turned to the Chief Engineer, standing at the Engineering console. "Mr. Dalton," he said amusedly. "Very nice of you to join us on this occasion." The Lieutenant Commander made a slight mocking bow and returned to the screen. Martin shook his head ever so slightly, but he couldn't help a small smile forming on his face.

Martin looked at the Bajoran manning the tactical station and began giving the orders for the most interesting mission of his career. At least so far. "Ms. Serur, stand by to raise shields immediately. Can't be too careful." Dejet, her usual laconic self, simply gave a nod. Martin spun around and looked at the viewscreen with his First Officer next to him. "Let's get this started, then. Commander, lock onto the relic down on the planet. Stand by to activate tractor beams."
Tosian tapped away on his console and it gave a few beeps in response. He said, "Aye, Captain. Target locked. Ready to activate tractor beam."
Martin took a deep breath and decisively said, "Engage beam."

Tosian pressed another time on his console. For a few moments, the telltale hum of the beam could be heard and Tosian's console showed it's status as ENGAGED, but just four seconds later the hum stopped and the Ops console gave a strained beep. The Andorian looked at it and said to his bemused Captain, "No effect, sir. Beam disengaged automatically."

This time, Kara was the one to step up. She turned herself toward the Chief Engineer and demanded, "No effect? Dalton! Increase power to the beam. Now!" The engineer turned around quickly and keyed in a new configuration. He turned back toward Kara and nodded. Martin watched with satisfaction as his Number One quickly and efficiently gave the orders to retry. The Andorian operations officer pressed the button on his console again and the beam's hum returned for a second attempt.

The anticipation on the Bridge of the Verity was palpable as the hum continued its cycle. Moments later, it was disrupted by a massive shake that knocked both Martin and Kara to the ground. Instantly, red lights, blaring sirens and the voice of the computer added to the chaos. *"Warning: structural integrity field collapsing. Total structural failure imminent."* Before even trying to stand up, Martin yelled, "Shields!"
Dejet, who had barely managed to hold on to the tactical console, just about heard him over the noise and slammed her hand on the console in an effort to raise the shields.

A few seconds later, the alarms fell silent and the shaking subsided into nothingness as the inertial dampeners took over again. Kara stood up and extended a hand to Martin, who took the help. He looked around the Bridge and, having confirmed no one had sustained any major injuries, he loudly demanded, "What the hell just happened?!" Kara stepped up once more. She asked, "Computer, cause of the disruption?"
*"Energy field similar to tractor beam."*
She frowned. "Is it still affecting us? And where's it coming from?"
*"The energy field is active. The field is being projected by the unknown object currently locked as target."*

Martin sighed. "Fantastic. Let's at least try and get out of here. Ensign, set course away from the planet at full impulse. Engage."
The ensign sitting at the conn tapped at the console and then shook his head. "Negative, sir. No movement."
Martin had just opened his mouth to give an order to try again when he was interrupted by the computer. *"Warning: shield drain detected. Shields will completely drain in 10 hours, 27 minutes."*

Martin paced around the bridge for a second and then looked at his senior staff's slightly dejected faces. "I want a full report in an hour. Anything that could possibly help. Or the Verity gets shook to death in 10 hours." He walked off towards the Ready Room and gestured for Kara to follow him.

Kara and Martin exchanged an exasperated look as they walked toward the loud arguing coming out of the briefing room. Kara shook her head and Martin just let out a quiet sigh as they stepped over the threshold.

Even as they sat down at the end of the table, the arguing between Engineer Dalton, Dr. Rutezo and the Andorian Operations Officer didn’t stop. Martin, with his nerves already frayed by his insanely eventful first mission, snapped and shouted, “Shut up already!” The senior staff instantly went quiet and turned to look at their captain. He continued with an edge in his voice. “While you’ve been here yelling, me and Kara came up with a few ideas.”

Martin stood up and stood behind his chair. “First of all, there’s no shooting our way out of this. The field forms a kind of shield, so phasers won’t work and torpedoes.. would be a bad idea.” He paced to the window and back and took a deep breath. “However, it appears the field can let through small, slowly moving objects. We’ve deployed a distress probe, but help from Starfleet would never get here in time. We did get the idea of deploying a team to the artifact via shuttle, where they could figure something out. Maybe even shoot it with hand phasers.”

Now calmer, Martin sat back down. “Any questions or better ideas?” The senior staff was quiet in contemplation for a few seconds. The silence was broken by Lieutenant Serur, who said, “I’ll get rifles from the armory. Might need firepower,” promptly stood up and exited the room. As if encouraged by Dejet, the engineer suddenly asked, “Who’s going down to the planet?” Kara looked at him with disdain and answered, “Don’t worry, Dalton. You get to stay here. Me, Noril and Serur are going.”

Noril nodded and said, “We should prepare for communications problems. The interference affecting our scan field will likely also affect our communicators.” Martin agreed and Kara and Noril started to leave for the shuttle bay when Dr. Rutezo stood up as well. Kara doubled back for a second and said, “I didn’t say for you to come with, Doctor.” Rutezo ignored her and walked through the door toward the shuttle bay. Kara shot Martin a look before following the doctor, which he answered with a shrug.

Martin leaned back in his chair. “Then we’re done. Dalton, you stay here. I want to have a word. Commander, you have the bridge.” The Andorian nodded and left the room.
