So apparently Masterchief isn't the only Spartan that was made at first... in this show. I can already notice them adapting the story for TV, but let's see.

I believe it's set to release in March.

In the Halo lore there was originally 75 Spartan-II candidates, 33 of which went into active service. Johnson belonged to the ORION project which was re-dubbed Spartan-I, so he and the others like him where the precursors to the Chief.

I've seen clips of it but it's... odd. I gather the series is considered non-canon and is set in its own universe, but they have done a good job with the Mjolnir armour. The guy playing John-117 (Pablo Schreiber) seems to be doing the best he can and understands what it is he's dealing with, though his voice doesn't really fit the perception of the Chief.

I sat and watched that episode yesterday and you're right, it's set in an alternate timeline which becomes clear as the first episode progresses. Visually, the show is stunning and they do some great justice to the games. But I'm not the largest fan of this alternate timeline stuff which is becoming common to avoid "canon".
