So I want to ask this.....

What do you think needs fixing in Ares?

Also been dealing with back issues. I'll try to respond to any concerns you have the best I can.

OK, I caught this on one of my good days so I can throw in my $0.02.

I've been trying to piece together what I've done wrong with Ares.
You're operating on an incorrect assumption Josh. You haven't done anything wrong.

I know we've been declining & I don't know how to fix it.
Ares has been declining since the pandemic began and most of the crew disappeared. There's only so much you can do with a limited playerbase. Three or four people shouldn't be expected to write for all departments, you included. The CO is there to guide the story and nudge it along when things get slow, not to write the whole story.

What do you think needs fixing in Ares?
Tough question but I'll be as honest as I can be. With the advent of Ares being included in Task Force Pheonix, is the idea still to do the outward bound mission? Because it seems unnecessary to have a whole squadron of ships start the outward bound mission when it was due to be Ares alone. If not and it's still going to be part of TFP, then Ares needs to have a new mission concept that can interact with the other ships without being dependent on them.

Ares is still the hero ship of the forum but if you feel the need to rattle the cage to make change, blow up the ship. Gauge interest in a new crew and mission. If the interest isn't there, that's ok, shut it down and use the Ares forum to offer support aspiring writers for a while. If the interest is there, have a change of ship class, keep the registry and add an A after it. There's hundreds of scenarios for science, engineering and diplomatic missions that can give different crew writers their time to shine rather than be support functions to patch things up when it goes wrong.

Feel free to reach out. I may not be around as much as I used to be but I do check the forums occasionally.

    ***SHIFTY EYES***
I plead the 5th on this, good sir. LOL

This is the general plan i have laid out.

First actual mission is a first(RE: SECOND) contact mission with a hint of things to come with various random missions, Like finding a super dense Nebula, a derelict ship found with a load of valuable cargo....but the ship is crewless, save for one lone Klingon.

All this will lead to a ***REDACTED TO PRESERVE SUSPENSE***.

Thing is, I get SUPER PUT OFF TRACK by things outside the sim & I have to try to get back into a grove of posting.

While there are and have been been issues, we need to step away from assigning blame or fault, rather we need to look at what's up and how to fix it. No-one should, or be expected to be doing everything themselves. Use your XO, get the staff onboard to help complete the tasks ahead.

Touching on what Welsh said, the pandemic did a number on things both at Ares and the community as a whole - people got burnt out, drifted away, shifted focused elsewhere etc. - and it's going to take some time for the UFP (and other communities) to fully recover from that as the world outside slowly returns to normal, or at least as normal as it can get under the current circumstances.

I believe the key is in setting out a clear focus and vision of where Ares is going to go next and that should be the priority going forward, because if you've got that, then you've got something people can see and experience, which will be a crucial piece towards recruiting new players to get the RP back up to speed. I know you've got something in mind, so use it as the foundation, build it up from there.

I've def seen things fall right off a cliff during the THING.

I need to put up a post of what I plan on doing with the story, map out each beat that i have. My brain right now is.....A BAG OF FERRAL CATS.....LOL.

I'll try to talk to the XO this weekend, provided I REMEMBER!! LOL
I was just about to pm you requesting we have a talk. Last time things didn't go as we expected, but we should be able to work out a moment where we can talk, bounce things off one another. This weekend is pretty much empty agenda wise so send me your best time and place, and I'll make sure I'm there.

And /ontopic I'd say that there are a couple of things that are important in the future with Ares.

1: Uniformity of the posts. We should decide on posting formatting and stick with it. I suggest sticking with the most used formatting as described in the Ares posting guidelines. Using =^= for comm communication and so on. Start a post with the main location (ie. ship, planet, or starbase), then the precise location (ie. ready-room, or hanger bay or the officer's mess toilets or whatever), then the stardate (I keep insisting that this helps a lot both for the reader and for the other players), and then the post itself. In the end, the participants in the post if it is a joint post.

2: Decide if the number of players and the level of participation for TFP is... what we all hoped it would be. Let me be blunt, we need to decide if we can continue TFP. It had a good start, but I have a feeling that in practice it hasn't brought what many thought it would. I don't know what that was, but I know something isn't working. Having lots of non-simm issues doesn't mesh well with making the simm more complicated and "diluted" (don't know a better word for it). But that's just my view of it. We need to decide one way or another though.

3: RP-Ing, with the Play By Forum Role Playing Game (what we do) being a big chunk of it, has at one point been so popular and active that a triple-A publisher/developer at one point gave permission to use a version of their game and mod it to such an extent it could be used on the UFP to RPG in it. These days, not that special anymore, with the mod community has become what it is, but back in those days that was, as far as I know, unprecedented. Especially when taking the publisher into consideration: Activision. They were not exactly known for their leniency regarding modding and using their assets and stuff. The PBFRPG (the USS August) got so popular the number of players was too many and it had to be split up. First into a colony and the August, then there was the Starbase Legacy and the August.

That was a long way round to come to the question:

Isn't there anything we can learn from back then? How, and what, made the USS August such a success it ended up with more players than it could handle? I'm not saying we should copy that one on one, but maybe there are some things we could pick up from that. I know there are achieved database stored records of the forum from back then, at least the mission posts were recoverable (for which I am still eternally grateful to Jordan!). So maybe there's something we can learn from in the communications surrounding those mission posts?

4: Somehow I think this is the most important thing for the moment: Don't stop. Keep going with the few players we've got. I know it is a lot less difficult to revitalize something slumbering than it is to spawn something from nothing. As long as we have a SIMM going (ie. the USS Ares) no matter how slow the pace and small the active crew, we have something to promote, recruit for, and refer to when trying to wrestle up interest and potential crew somewhere. When it stops, I am afraid that the RPG-ing here will go the way of the Dodo.

5: Ever since I've come back to the Ares project I've heard from several people they'd like to have some sort of meeting of all participants, either in discord, Teamspeak or whatever means that enables a meeting with all of us together. I still think that's a good idea. It's a chance to get to know each other on another level, and can have a teambuilding effect. Everyone can react to each other right away, without the chance of real life and time getting between what someone said and what someone wanted to respond to it. It's also more natural for humans to converse in real time and therefore more comfortable.

Sorry about the length of my reply. Let me just assure you that this is the abbreviated version. It's just because I have strong feelings about the UFP Simm, perhaps stronger than I should. But it's one of the things that I originally came to the UFP for, over a decade ago. I know that the ufp community overall has shrunk over the years with there being little to no "fresh" trek being released but since the movies and then Discovery kicked off a wave of new Star Trek coming out (Discovery, Picard, Lower Decks, Progidy, Kelvin timeline) there should be a way to get at least some upswing in both UFP and SIMM participation, right?

Anyway, as always I am here and ready to do what it takes.

    Regards,
    Christ

Sadly, some how this post I never saw up until now. I really like some of the ideas you guys all presented. Very well thought out and delineated. So please allow me to chime in on some things. I mean I couldn't call myself a Simulation Officer and be silent... right?

I believe that the Phoenix Taskforce should have been done much differently. In most settings if you do want to go multi-ship then the key is to establish the future Captains from the Ares starship itself. Meaning you promote out of Ares once players have cut the mustard so to speak from the ARES muti-group setting. This allows Ares to be more of an incubator and also provides incentive for players to RP and level up so to speak. This also allows what the players do during missions to carry much more directly earned depth as to what their character's dossier of events or accomplished missions look like.

These missions would be actually completed from the player character and instead of just giving them a ship and saying "You're the Captain now."

Ares multiship should also not be apart from the Joint Taskforce Phoenix group. They both should work in tandem and that can be done by actually giving a bonus or lets say full staffing reward for players who do decide to have two or more players on one ship as opposed to just single player starships. So in short sure you can play as a Captain and crew and just be one player, but your ship will be short staffed compared with a multiplayer ship like the Ares.

In this dynamic you aren't forcing players to have other players on their single player ship, you are just providing incentive for them to work with someone just like ARES has done. Sure they won't share the same thread but the Taskforce and Ares should exist in the same universe and assist each other. This will allow the two to be symbiotic to enhance both gaming environments.

The Ares also needs to be the Flagship of the Phoenix Taskforce with Josh being the Captain.

I would go on but I'll save all that for the meeting.

    Cheers!

I'm not a participant of Ares but I have been looking at it on and off over the years as I do have a history of text based roleplaying in a variety of genres.

That said, Ares to me felt to be a very advanced one RP in terms of requirements when it comes to posting, at least to an outsider.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I personally felt a bit intimidated by that which is why I've never been able to bring myself over that line to sign up.

Nah, dont feel intimidated. Especially if you have experience in text based roleplaying. Just keep the story moving, I'd say, that's the most important thing. There are many different types of roleplayers with different styles and talents. Be yourself. Pick up tips along the way that make your work better, not tips to make you sound like others. I remember playing with people that made walking through a door sound like poetry. I said, "Nahhh, cant do that! - I can do this though: "Joe walked through the door." And then hey, I can work up to this - "Joe walked through the door, irritated." *L* See, growth!

I do like this idea. It allows you to have two characters, a captain character of your own and an Ares character, which leaves the Ares fully stocked. Like if Biiqs were promoted to Captain, then I"d just create Ensign Jones or Lt. Bropp to fill a need or spot on Ares.

I've been trying to piece together what I've done wrong with Ares. I know we've been declining & I don't know how to fix it. Been trying to figure out how to fix this....
So I want to ask this.....

What do you think needs fixing in Ares?

Also been dealing with back issues. I'll try to respond to any concerns you have the best I can.

This got lost when I tried to send it yesterday, but you didnt do anything wrong. Since COVID, everyone has had different work schedules, different home and life responsibilities, different uses of free time, etc. It's hard to get everyone up and pumping out stories. The fact that the story keeps rolling along, however slowly, is an accomplishment in my book.

How to get it rolling faster?

Uhm, I dont know, but it just occurred to me that maybe we could suggest shorter posts? We all probably love a good post of substance. But sometimes, we dont have much to give on their side, at that time. So they try to stretch it out and make it an appreciable size so that they feel like they're pulling their weight. Am I wrong? Doesn't this happen to others? Where you get tagged in this great post, and really, the only thing of substance your character has to say is, "Yes, I'll get on that right away." But you cant just send that, so you have to have your character sigh and rub their head and lean forward in their chair and tap up the right information on their screen to make sure they have everything correct, and then have a whole memory about how this related to their service in the Dominion War before you can type, "Yes, I'll get on that right away!" But all that thinking of what to write takes time! So we can maybe be mindful of how much we're typing when things get hot. But of course, right now, we're still docked and there isnt much reason to not have longer posts.
