Early Years (2348-2367)
Born in 2348 on Cait in the months following a treaty between the United Federation of Planets and the Cardassian Union that saw the Davon system be ceded to Cardassian influence, R’Turan grew up far away from the intrigues of Federation politics, living on a Federation research outpost where his parents both studied the wildlife native to their homeworld as Starfleet-employed xenobotanists. It can be said, thus, that Starfleet was in his blood, though young R’Turan did not initially seem destined for a life amongst the stars.

This all changed in 2353 when a Tholian incursion saw the outpost where R’Turan and his family lived burned down amongst widespread damage to Cait itself, leaving only R’Turan and his parents (his sister, S’Nira, and his grandparents died during the attack). They fled to Starbase 11 as part of a Caitian refugee colony. Coming into first true contact with Starfleet and the Federation, R’Turan gained immediate respect for the professional, organised manner in which Starfleet conducted its affairs.

Given simple quarters and access to scientific labs on Starbase 11, H’uaw and Csiri, his parents, were enlisted as Petty Officers into the Federation and Starfleet’s scientific efforts, and they raised their remaining son with the values of exploration and discovery, but also with caution and surety of purpose. From that point on, the young Caitian’s path was clear: he would join Starfleet Academy when he came of age and join the interstellar service. Preparing for this future was the young boy’s sole concern over the next few years until his application to Starfleet Academy was accepted in 2367, just five days before his nineteenth birthday.

Academy Years (2367-2371)
Accepted into Starfleet Academy on account of his high grades in the required subjects, R’Turan passed through the required Academy Entrance Competition Exams—scoring high marks, particularly in tactically-oriented tests and understanding of alien cultures, which was in part due to the regimented discipline of his own parents and exposure to the Federation’s multicultural heritage onboard Starbase 11.

Passing through the Starfleet Academy Preparatory Program, R’Turan participated in the Entrance Exam and passed it with flying colours, becoming Cadet R’Turan of Starfleet Academy. Saying goodbye to his parents, he departed to Earth where he was housed and taught at the San Francisco Campus. The next four years went by in a blur. Majoring in Command And Control and Klingon Politics (the latter encouraged by one of his few friends), R’Turan developed hobbies beyond the work his parents had always given him, found a particular fascination with historical strategy and tactics, and learned how to wield the Bat’leth, picking up its use even at the competitive level. Graduating in 2371, R’Turan was assigned to the USS Orion (NCC-63247), a Steamrunner-class starship, where he served as Security Officer.

The Dominion War (2371-2375)
Serving aboard the USS Orion, R’Turan settled into his new role and position over the next few years before he found himself first on the Federation-Klingon border as part of the Sixth Fleet on the eve of the Federation-Klingon War. The USS Orion took part in the Battle of Archanis IV to (unsuccessfully) slow the Klingon advance while the Federation rallied its defences; it was reassigned to the Seventh Fleet.

But the Federation-Klingon was would not be the focus of the USS Orion or of the Federation itself. No, a greater threat emerged in the Alpha Quadrant: the Cardassian Union and the Dominion, which broke the fragile peace secured by the Treaty of Davon in 2348 and attacked. Sweeping Federation defences, the USS Orion was redeployed, and R’Turan with it, to the Alpha Quadrant.

Taking part in the disastrous Battle of the Tyra System, R’Turan got his first taste of the Dominion War there, fleeing like all ships that remained with his tail between his legs, after which he was promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade due to ‘valiant actions’ during the battle. The USS Orion was reassigned to the Fifth Fleet following the near-destruction and dissolution of the Sixth Fleet. What followed was a series of counter-offensives: from Operation Return wherein they found an unconventional ally in the Klingons to regain control of Deep Space 9 and its Wormhole. The Chief of Security aboard the USS Orion was killed during the battle, and R’Turan was selected as his successor, earning a position as a full Lieutenant and a place on the bridge.

Continuing the Federation offensive, the USS Orion took part in both Battles of Chin’toka and the eventually decisive Battle of Cardassia, though it was struck by opposing fire and crippled until her warp core detonated, destroying the ship. R’Turan was one of the few survivors and the blast rendered one of his eyes inoperable: something he detests but has deliberately not healed. He claims it helps him remember who he lost.

The Semper Exploro Project (2375-2381)
Following the conclusion of the Dominion War, R’Turan was placed on inactive duty to recover from the Battle of Cardassia and get used to having only one eye: he spent most of four years recovering, and when he was returned to active service he was assigned to the USS Nova (NCC-73000), the first of the new Nova-class science ships. Promoted to Lieutenant Commander, he served as its Chief Tactical Officer for barely a year before he was drafted into the Semper Exploro Project and assigned to the USS Ares (NCC-79116) as First Officer to its Captain, Matthew Wilson.

Wilson unfortunately passed and R’Turan was skipped over for promotion, instead continuing to serve as First Officer to nascent Captain Dyrell Teriir before he was dispatched to the planet Dorvan V to serve as part of the Federation task force there. R’Turan could not handle the quiet, peaceful nature of life there, used to the thrills of exploration and combat as he was, and so retired from service for half a year until mid-2381.

Return to Starfleet (2381-Present)
Returned from retirement due to an urge to continue Starfleet’s Continuing Mission: to seek out new life forms and new civilisations, and to go where no one had gone before, R’Turan was reinstated as Lieutenant Commander, his prior promotion to Commander being discarded in view of how brief it had been, and assigned to the USS Fearless (NCC-14598) as a Tactical Officer and later as First Officer.
