You know, these videos are completely, utterly stupid.

No, I'm stupid for watching it. Never in life did I think that Star Trek fandom would break down to the point where I'm watching a poop emoji tell me how this scene looks like that scene.

It's science fiction. Like regular fiction, just about everything as been done before. Some things are most likely homages, like the 2001 Space Odyssey scene. Other things are just dumb. A space suit with a heads up display is a rip off of Iron Man? Okay.......

It's always been like this... Just like any video game where you can drive a car.. Then go out on foot are instantly labelled as a "Grand Theft Auto" clone..

What a load of utter drivel.

If people who clearly hate the show that much feel the need to devote so much energy to spewing their vitriol around in videos like this to try and stir up a riot then perhaps...I don't know....maybe they just shouldn't watch it at all?!

I don't think there are many people who claim that Discovery is an original work of fiction, not much is there days. As SnowWolf said, things get called GTA clones, even before that Doom clones, as if they can't use similar concepts and stand on their own merits.

I have my issues with Discovery, mostly the writing and character development, or lack of. I also said early in Season 2 that it was having an identity crisis, it didn't seem to know what kind of show it wanted to be, taking bits from others. I do think it eventually found it's footing in being a bit of a sci-fi space opera, which is fine if it has an audience.

Ultimately, I think both extremes in Discovery discussions cause a lot of friction, you have sites that will worship every episode, and call people racist/haters/sexists for not liking the show. Then you have the other extreme that picks apart everything, and looks for GOTTCHA moments. I have watched some of the YouTubers who are heavily against Discovery, some are more constructive with criticism than others.

Bottom line, there's not much original fiction out there, I doubt even Shakespear made much original fiction.

I realise that there's the ongoing plagiarism case with the tardigrade game but honestly, look at Star Wars, it's loosely based on a Japanese film called Hidden Fortress. It even has two comic relief characters that Lucas turned into Droids.

But here's where most things get confused. It's a huge difference between paying homage to classic Sci-fi and claiming that it's not original. Ever seen the UK series Spaced? The crew deliberately paid homage to their favourite films and songs by putting them up front in the show. The DVD's even had a homage-o-meter so that you could see just what they were showing their love for.

To my mind there's just a vocal minority who put click bait out there to get views from angry trek fans who don't like the direction the franchise has taken. There's the other guy (I forget his name) who posts doom videos on how the Discovery show is being cancelled because his 'insiders' have told him so. Discovery gets picked up for another season and he just carries on making the same videos without ever admitting that he got it wrong because it's an avoidance technique that even Trump uses, 'I wasn't wrong I just told you what I heard'. Unless there's an announcement from the network, I'll call BS on anyone who claims to have inside knowledge. Same with angry poop emoji, it's BS to go digging around in cinema and tv history for something that looks vaguely like a shot you saw on a new tv show.

There's a very vocal minority who are clearly only interested in keeping the hate and anger going to anger-farm, dropping endless piles of clickbait videos and articles. Many of them are probably getting advertising revenue from it all or other benefits so they are definitely not impartial.
But anyone who devotes that much effort to hating something needs to have a serious look at their life choices.

This argument? Really? Please. Star Trek is hardly the first one to do something like this. Watch Disney's The Lion King again and then look up Kimba the White Lion. There's a reason for the saying (widely attributed to Picasso, but that's up for debate) "Good artists borrow, Great artists steal". Everyone does it.

I love Discovery just as I love TNG, TOS, Voyager, DS9, and even Enterprise. I love Star Trek.

All works of fiction in any genre borrow from all other works of Fiction. I'm not sure how many people here watched Sons of Anarchy but it was basically Hamlet. Star Wars Episode 7 was a rehash of Episode 4 which was a rehash of multiple sci-fi/fantasy stories. TNG has remade several TOS episodes. The Orville has remade several 90's Trek episodes with it's more recent being almost a direct copy of TNG Second Chances.

There is nothing wrong with retelling stories or borrowing elements and putting their own twist on it. Can you imagine what TNG would have been like had Social Media existed during it's original run? Some of you may be too young to remember the utter hate some Star Trek fans gave TNG it's first few years.

YouTubers like Nerdorotic, Mecharandom, Anti-Trekker, Midnight's Edge, and Computing Forever are just clickbate. They make money by being fake angry and spreading propaganda and rumor as fact. They all have "insiders" and "sources" that never seem to pan out. Nerorotic spend the first 5 weeks of Discovery talking about how his "insider source" told him how bad Discovery was doing and it wasn't going to be renewed, then after episode 6 they announced the renewal and how well the service was doing, all of the sudden his story changed to it had to be renewed to save face. Please. Not to mention they all have to tie political agendas into Discovery, Marvel, and Star Wars constantly which is getting old. If I care about politics I'll read the WSJ or NYT.

Aside from Trek Yards and Egotasticfuntime I pretty much avoid YouTube reviews all together. They bring nothing to the table. The only opinion/review that matters to me is mine. I think I am smart enough to know what I like and what I don't like.

It's always been like this... Just like any video game where you can drive a car.. Then go out on foot are instantly labelled as a "Grand Theft Auto" clone..

Exactly. And I suppose I cant knock their hustle, though. These people aren't setting out to make sense or be reasonable, they're just capitalizing off of the hate surrounding the show, using it for clicks to keep their business going. And I guess I can understand that in a business sense.

Yeah, I'm glad that the internet wasn't around during TNG days, because Trek fans would have killed Star Trek right then and there. There'd be no DS9 or anything else if the internet existed then, I think.

I was nine when Star Trek premiered, and the only two outlets for Star Trek discussion I recall were Starlog magazine and those creepy looking guys in the local library's Star Trek club. *L* So I was pretty much left in a bubble of my own beliefs about the show.

I dont watch any YouTube reviews of anything, because I have no patience to sit up and listen to some normal guy talk to me about something. I only skipped around here and there on this, to see if they were basically doing what I thought they were - just comparing apples to oranges and saying the oranges are copied apples.
