I remember seeing the news and being disappointed that Genevieve Bujold had left the production, but I can’t imagine anyone other than Kate Mulgrew as the Captain of Voyager now.

A true case of miscasting. I'm not saying she's a bad actress, given her past work, but I think Kate Mulgrew was a better choice to play Janeway. The latter was way more energetic in her voice and acting when you compare those scenes. I wouldn't have liked to have 7 seasons of the first version...

Putting it together I tried to think of the word that nailed down what Mulgrew brought to the part. Presence, hutzpah, authority? In the end I went with 'gravitas', but ended up cutting the paragraph.

However, I still think that's the best way to describe her energy in the role.

A great article there Silek, I've knew about the casting change but not more else besides she'd quit the job after a few days. It is a shame when that sort of thing happens, but watching that clip again today, you could see she wasn't the right fit. Her acting felt flat, or her voice, it's hard to explain.

I'm not sure that scene made a good first impression, her lines were very flat feeling with no real character behind them; it hardly felt like the captain of a ship that was at risk of being blown to pieces in a few seconds.

One interesting point of note, was Tom Paris the 1st officer in that scene? He sits in the chair next to the captain and seems to have no interest in the con station.

He sits on a "side" seat (like the ones on the Enterprise-D bridge), the 1st officer sits to the left of the Captain

But Voyager only has two seats on the bridge?

And seeing as Paris is on board solely as a pilot in the actual full series if this is the case in this scene why is he not at the controls? Surely you use your best pilot who you brought on specifically to navigate the Badlands...for escaping a weird energy wave in the Badlands?

He was only intended to be a guide, they had their own pilot for the ship who would've been more familiar with the controls.

I think everything worked out for the best, can't get a more powerful female lead then Kate Mulgrew IMO.

The thing is, Mulgrew could go full on Sarah Conner when she needed to, or give you varying levels of bad*** in between. I'm not sure Bujold had that intensity in her.

A lot of people make light of moments like Kirk's speech at Spock's funeral, or you might find me yelling 'Four lights!' at my wife across the room, but the truth is, these moments hit hard and make an impact because the actors went all in.

I'm not sure Bujold had that in her.

But then again she's a world renowned beloved actor...and I am not.

Oh the cringe..... I couldn't watch that clip to the end. Nope, clearly she wasn't the right person for the job. I can't even imagine Genevieve drinking coffee, let alone go to red alert over it

Kate Mulgrew was a better choice on my opinion, I'm not saying Bujold is a bad actress but Kate managed to perform Janeway with more realism in general.
