Here at the Federation News Service, we realize that you - the player - are a busy person. You may have kids, a job, a cat (or seven) or a busy school schedule. Every so often, there is a piece of STO news or a forum post that you may not catch that we feel is important. We at FNS would like to help you with that. Here are some pieces of news from the last few weeks we have found particularly interesting. These articles and posts could contain anything; gameplay mechanics, cosmetics changes, and everything in between.
Every few weeks we try to select a few items that we feel every player should know. There may be more or less depending on the information available. These items could come from the Star Trek Online official forums, a developer interview from another news outlet, or a player. In addition to a link to the source, we will provide our opinions on the topic as to why we think it matters to you.
So sit down with your crafting table, and lets muse on what's happening with STO in the coming weeks and months.
ARC News: Xindi Lockbox Overview / Season 9.5 is Live!
Why it Matters: Last time, we told you about the upcoming changes that you could look forward to with Season 9.5, and it certainly lived up to all expectations. FNS has been there to tell you about all these changes, with our Season 9.5 Debrief and our Xindi Lockbox exposé. We’ve seen the release of the new R&D system - which has impressed - and the new uniform variants. The Xindi Lockbox has also been well received, with the Narcine Carrier and the Reptilian Escort both proving to be absolute sensations with players. The new traits, DoFFs and weapons have also gone down extremely well.
Reddit: Priority One Podcast Notes
Why it Matters: Priority One had the fortune to engage in some Q&A with STO developer CaptainGeko. Whilst this wasn’t an interview, it did allow members of the community to pose questions to Cryptic on upcoming feature and details. Some of the questions posed were about changes to existing ships and buffs, such as the Aquarius class possibly getting a cloak and flanking bonus. The developer also confirmed that the Dauntless class is definitely going to be added to the game - but refused to pin down specifics. He also confirms that it’s planned for other ships to get some much needed ‘love’, as he put it.
Reddit: Priority One Podcast #183 Notes
Why it Matters: Cryptic’s UI Asset Creation Handler, TtC, gave a one-on-one interview with Priority One. TtC is credited with the creation of the Starfleet Academy, Odyssey and Bortasqu’ uniforms - amongst others. A great deal of the interview centers around this aspect of his role at Cryptic, but some questions were posed regarding UI and other changes. The full interview can be seen at the link above.
Youtube: Interesting News from Captain Geko
Why it Matters: Cryptic’s Geko seems to be everywhere these days, and gave an interview with STOked Radio, this time on very different topics. There was a lot of questions related to new content, and one of the few things that were definitely agreed on was that there will be a Fleet Guramba, as well as some other much needed updates to other ships in Expansion 2. Another pressing issue raised was the on-going problem of “Power Creep”, which is the gradual outdating of earlier content by new content, thereby invalidating the earlier content from the game. Geko did emphatically state that this was an issue that would be addressed.
