Entertainment news website Deadline.com broke the story that the new director of Star Trek III will be Justin Lin. Lin is known for directing films from the multi-billion dollar grossing Fast & Furious franchise and the TV sitcom Community.

While other directors have been considered for helming Star Trek III, Deadline says that Lin was the only one who was approached. Paramount had to rush to find a new director, as they likely want a 2016 release to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Star Trek franchise.

Lin will be replacing Orci, who was a co-writer and producer for the previous two Star Trek films. Although he is no longer directing it, Orci will remain a producer of Star Trek III. The previous two Star Trek films were directed by JJ Abrams, who has since left to direct the continuation of the Star Wars series in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Deadline made note that Universal had been discussing having Lin return for the multi-part finale to the Fast & Furious franchise, but it’s uncertain if directing Star Trek III will leave him unable to do this, scheduling-wise.

Yeah, that was pretty much my thoughts on the matter. That said, I'm hoping to be surprised.

I fear that this will lead to yet another reboot saga that focuses on pure action and forgets about the story part of Star Trek that made the series so captivating. I'm also hoping to be proven wrong here, the anniversary movie is a BIG DEAL to the franchise if they are going to continue to bring new fans to the Star Trek universe.

So lens flare will be replaced with even more explosions, mainstream music, and the Enterprise being ramped off an eighteen engine freighter...

I'd like to be incredibly critical here and say we'll hit a stage where we would rather the lense flare, but really, we wont. This still seems like a bad idea.

The guy may be a closet Star Trek fan... 'course the last time that happened was Nemesis...

*Please don't be terrrible....*

It's obvious to me that Paramount does not care about Star Trek apart from making money off the name. That is why new STIII will be a action-oriented plot-barren mediocre movie.

Because they know it will make money, just like the first 2 movies.

So... should we expect the enterprise to finally have a set of racing stripes and a new assistant chief engineering - a cameo from Vin Diesel to make an appearance in this one as an alien with a limited speech... wait...

The Enterprise will now be pimped out with spinning rims and one of those neon lights that makes the undercarriage glow. Oh, Kirk and Spock will decide to pull one last heist to get enough latinum to go where no one has gone before and get the heat (Starfleet) off their backs so Spock and Uhura can finally have their love child. Cumberbatch will return in true Rock form to try to stop the team and ultimately join them as a matter of honor. Okay...that's enough comparisons to Fast and Furious for now...

In short, this is terrible news!!!

Star Trek 3 Plot: The Enterprise is going to be drag racing around Nebulae and drifting around Planets. Racing the Klingons and Romulans along the way. The Warp Core will be turbo-charged of course!

Ben, don't forget the NOS. It can't go into overdrive without the NOS kicked in. ;-)
