Leonard is survived by his wife, Susan Bay Nimoy, son Adam and daughter Julie, a stepson Aaron Bay Schuck, six grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and an older brother, Melvin.
Mrs Nimoy announced his death, stating that it was due to end-stage Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.
This follows an announcement last year by Nimoy that he was suffering from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, which was caused by years of smoking, and for which he was hospitalized earlier this week.
Mr Nimoy was known for many things; music, poetry, photography and most notably, acting. It was through acting that he became a household name and beloved the world over, portraying Mr Spock, the half-Human/half-Vulcan first officer of the U.S.S. Enterprise on Star Trek in the 1960s. This character would live on through 3 seasons on Star Trek, through Star Trek: The Animated Series, guest appearances on Star Trek: The Next Generation and 8 feature films, most recently in Star Trek: Into Darkness and spanning over nearly half a century.
Although Spock is the character that Nimoy was most easily associated with, he had conflicting emotions toward the character, which he expanded on in his 2 autobiographies I Am Not Spock in 1977 and later I Am Spock in 1995.
Nimoy also went on to portray Spock in the popular Massively-Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game, Star Trek Online, not only during the mission Past Imperfect but also as the narrator for the Federation faction. He also recently voiced a vintage toy of Spock in the popular show The Big Bang Theory.
This loss will forever resonate within Star Trek fandom, and all the thoughts and prayers of the UFPlanets.com community go to the Nimoy family on this tragic occaision.
Leonard Simon Nimoy will always Live Long And Prosper in the hearts and minds of all those he has touched, not only through Star Trek, but through all of his works.
Leonard Nimoy was one of the main reasons, if not THE reason, I fell in love with Star Trek. My earliest memories are of watching Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, which was honestly my first real introduction to the Trek universe. The way in which he played Mr. Spock, not only in that movie, but, over the years has resonated with me since those days and was the main inspiration behind my chosen character in STO. I have often looked up to the ideals that Mr. Nimoy brought to the character of Spock, what he stood for, and how he approached life on and off screen. In the truest sense, Leonard Nimoy was one of my role models for many points of my life and continues to be so today. He will be greatly missed.
Leonard Nimoy also voiced Galvatron in the transformers 1986 movie and Sentinal Prime in Transformers dark of the moon. All in all rest in peace Leonard for you have went into the final frontier
We have lost one of the greatest ambassadors of the franchise, a man who gave life to one of our most beloved characters, and a good man. I am truly at a loss for words. He will live long and prosper in the hearts and minds of all Star Trek fans and the lives he touched throughout the world. Thank You Leonard Nimoy. May you rest in peace and may your spirit fly free among the stars.
A true giant, and one of Star Trek's biggest idols. He boldly goes to a better place, in such distinguished company as Gene & Majel Roddenberry, Deforest Kelly & James Doohan.
I was watching DS9 "Far Beyond the Stars" when I learned about this sad news.
Mr Nimoy, Spock, you lived long and prospered. I hope you're dreaming well now. RIP
I can only echo everyones sentiment thus far. But I suppose I'll just add that Mr. Spock is synonymous with Star Trek and in a great part because of Mr. Nimoy's role in the series and the life of the franchise at large afterwards. I mean he even lives on in the JJ'verse.
His presence in this world will sorely be missed. I liked seeing him in other roles too other than Star Trek such as in the TV series Fringe as William Bell or even in something as silly as Bruno Mars' The Lazy Song (the Alternate version).
My heart broke today when I heard the news about Mr. Nimoy's passing. Spock was my all-time favorite character in all of science fiction, not just Star Trek. He inspired me throughout my childhood and fueled my Trek fandom and will continue to do so. Leonard brought his exceptional talent to the role and created a legend. Rest in Peace, Mr. Nimoy. LLAP
Rest in peace, Mr. Nimoy. You were such an important role model in my life and for countless others. I hope you know how important and loved you were. You will be missed.
The character he played for whom he is most famous appealed to so many of us because of how well it portrayed a fundamental irony of the human condition -- that we all feel ourselves outsiders, who have to learn how to be human. Nimoy continued to develop the character over the years, and our last sight of Spock was of a person who has attained wisdom and inner peace.
By all accounts, Leonard Nimoy lived his life well, and he gave us all a gift, for which we are grateful.
