We're all very much aware of CBS' previous announcement on the upcoming Star Trek TV series, due to be released in January 2017 on the corporation's internet streaming service. What we've learned today however, is how the internal workings of CBS are affecting how the series is being produced, part of a franchise that's traditionally been made for television broadcast.

At a briefing this morning as part of the Television Critics Association Press Tour, CBS Entertainment President Glenn Geller provided an assuring or worrying answer, depending on how you look at it in response.

"I don’t have anything to do with it -- it really is for [CBS All Access]. While the network will be broadcasting the pilot [on television], I actually can’t answer any creative questions about it. [The new series] was always designed for a streaming service, and I’m just thrilled we get to be part of the launch." Geller says, alluding to that there was likely little discussion on broadcasting the upcoming series on TV at all.

We do know however, that the pilot will get the singular chance to be placed onto the CBS Television networks in the US, for the strategic purpose of attracting likely fans onto the their streaming service.

According to KSITETV, another interesting snippet from the press briefing, was that Geller didn't seem to know how any new characters might be portrayed in the show. "I’m not sure about the future plans creatively about new characters,” Geller says.

From Twitter and thanks to TrekCore, when he was asked whether writers for the show had been found, he suggested that was a question best put to the CBS Television Production arm, who we can assume is responsible for physically producing the new show, rather than being outsourced to a third party studio company.

It's our aim here at UFPlanets.com to bring all the latest news regarding the upcoming Star Trek TV series as well as many other facets of the news, so stay tuned!

Not sure what to make of it. I can't watch CBS anyway, so my main sources are Netflix and discs for watching series. As long as it will be available on there, I guess for me it's mostly a question of how will this impact budgets and creative licensing, could be for better or worse.

Star Trek has historically been produced on tight budgets. I remember Lavar Burton telling how the special effects crew used disposable razors to create a shuttlecraft for TNG early on. SCI-FI is not cheap to produce but I believe Star Trek has proven it can be done. As long as whoever is in charge of the wallet knows where to put the money, it should be OK.

To re-quote my earlier response in another thread:

The article on startrek.com seems to indicate that the show will run exclusively on CBS' paid streaming service. It's a dumb move on their part if that is true because it limits the audience to a small portion of viewers who actually use their service. I either watch tv shows on the nights they are aired on tv or I watch whatever episodes are available for free on the show's official page.
