Ships of the Fleet Sunday VOL 3. Norway Class

Third instalment of Ships of the Fleet Sunday, this week it's the Norway class.

By KaiserKirk Sun 22 Apr, 2018 5:47 PM
Welcome you to the third instalment of Ships of the Fleet Sunday! This week we look at the Steamrunner class, after breaking down the Steamrunner Class last week

This week will be focusing on the Norway class, a ship that I am not particularly fond of, but as requested it will keep in line with previous instalments as part of the anti-Borg taskforce breakdown.

Background

Origins: Designed by Alex Jaeger and constructed at ILM by Larry Tan and Paul Theren.

Design: The ship was designed, like most by ILM. The ship was supposed to be, along with its counterparts (Akira, Norway, Defiant and Sabre) to be unique and not follow the standard design of vessels that is the main source section connected by a neck to the main body, usually engineering and the deflector, and then the body being connected to by two nacelles. The Norway class is considered the most well rounded of the vessels that came out of the Anti-Borg initiative.

The ship had an extremely low profile when viewed from the front or sides and could sport a great number of shuttlecraft or fighters. The Norway features a very limited amount of external viewports, showing the amount of attention Starfleet put into the design to make it as structurally secure as possible.

Classifications

The Norway was built to be a very versatile combat cruiser. Its large hanger bays also made it useful as a small carrier or evacuation vessel. It was usually used as a versatile tactical cruiser during the Dominion War were it would deploy squadrons of Perigrin Fighters and use its spartan frame, mostly forward heavy weapon systems and strong hull to charge at the enemy and deal moderate damage.

Type: Versatile tactile cruiser.

Decks: ???

Crew: 190 with a 500 evacuation limit, one of the largest in the fleet.

Warp: Unlike the Sabre and Steamrunner this vessel could perform warp 9.7 for 12 hours, making it one of the slowest of the next generation warships.

Sublight: 2 large saucer mounted impulse engines.

My thoughts: I have never liked the Norway design, it looked far too odd, especially the saucer and pylons. Unlike all its other counterparts that actually had a special role, such as the Sabre being a fast tough as nails escort and the Steamrunner being a long-range torpedo ship, the Norway didn't have anything really going for it. It was just a filler ship that was designed to be seen in the background and nothing else. Thank God for Isaac with his Scenario idea because I was initially clueless on how to show off its abilities in an exciting manner... don't get your hopes up though.

Armaments

6 Type-X Phaser Arrays: Are the most advanced and heaviest type of phaser installed on starships from this era. Each ship would be equipped with a number of phaser arrays consisting of multiple emitters for each type. The Steamrunner had two phaser Name: Meshweaver Eaglemoss Star Trek The Official Starships Collection Norway class rendering.jpg

Size: 24.1 KBarrays on the top of the saucer section. And two in the same spot on the ventral side of the saucer section. The phasers are designed to have a large firing arc, allowing the class to fire in almost any direction.

9 Directional Phaser Emitters: From 2245 to 2270, ship-mounted phaser emitters were built into the hulls of Starfleet vessels and were operated from a control room by a small crew as a backup to bridge control. The only drawback was that if an antimatter imbalance occurred, the phasers would be automatically cut off. Ship-mounted emitters were typically arranged into phaser banks. The normal arrangement was one or two emitters to a bank. Phaser banks and their emitters were later replaced by phaser arrays in the 24th century on more modern starships. Smaller vessels such as shuttlecraft and Maquis fighters continued to use phaser emitters, however

2 Photon Torpedo Launchers: The photon torpedo used shaped charges of antimatter that, when they came in contact with conventional matter or hard energy barriers, released massive amounts of gamma-ray photons, hence the weapon's name. They were developed in part due to the requirement for a weapon, which unlike phasers, could be used at faster than light speeds which made the Photon torpedo very unique, useful and deadly. The Steamrunner class had both torpedo tubes at the front of the ship, leaving the aft somewhat defenceless to a surprise attack.

Defences

Deflector Shields: Most starships are fitted with deflector shields, often projected from a deflector dish, to protect them from particle impacts which, particularly at high velocities, could cause huge amounts of damage. While basic deflectors and deflector beams could provide minimal protection from weapons fire and basic mishaps, the majority of advanced starships were also fitted with more powerful shielding which could be activated in tactical situations. However, these shields were sufficiently powerful that they also blocked out transporter beams. Shields could be configured in two forms; ellipsoid form shielding, common in Federation starships in the 24th century, which projected a shield bubble around a starship; or contour-conforming shielding which was projected much closer to the ship's hull, providing more specifically localized protection. Some shielding systems also allowed shielding over specific areas of a ship to be activated or deactivated to provide protection for a specific area only and presumably reduce power consumption not protecting the entire hull.

Duranium-Tritanium hull plating.

Microfiber Reinforced Ablative Armour: Was a type of protective hull plating used on starships, which possessed a capability for rapidly dissipating the energy impacts from directed energy weapon fire.

Auxiliary craft: (Unknown amount) shuttlecraft: Are small craft that could be transported or launched from larger starships. The Federation made use of Shuttlecraft during the Dominion war as fighter craft or strikecraft. The Norway launched its extensive compliment out of two long hanger bay at the aft of the main saucer section, just above the two nacelles.

Bridge: No official images of the bridge for the Norway exist but we can assume that it would be either identical or somewhat similar to the Sovereign or Defiant as the bridge shape appears similar.

Known ships of the class

As with the Steamrunner, only one ship is completely canon and that is the USS Budapest (NCC-64923) which I believe is the only Norway class seen defending sector 001 in First Contact.

USS Albany, NCC-64930
Commanding officer: ???
Commision: 2375-???

USS Arian, NCC-???
Commanding officer:
Commision: 2370s-2377
Interesting facts: Succeeded the earlier Sabre class, USS Arian.

USS Bergen, NCC-???
Commanding officer: Ahmed al-Rashid
Commision: 2370s-2374
Interesting facts: In the year 2374 the Bergen was one of sixteen Federation ships assigned to defend the Setlik star system against Cardassian forces during the Dominion War.

USS Budapest, NCC-64923
Commanding officer: Captain Sh'Raazn
Commision: 2370s-2377
Interesting facts: Fought against the second Borg invasion at the Battle of Sector 001, the Budapest was one of five test-bed starships using the new TR-116 rifles. After the ship was boarded by the Borg the crew put the new rifles to good use. The Budapest took heavy casualties including its captain but the Borg were defeated.

USS Denmark, NCC-???
Commanding officer: ???
Commision: 2370s-2377
Interesting facts: The Denmark was assigned to deep frontier patrol.

USS Endeavor, NCC-???
Commanding officer: ???
Commision: 2373-2376 until succeeded by the Akira class USS Endeavor
Interesting facts: The Endeavor was engaged by the Borg in the year 2373 and lost many crewmen to assimilation.

USS Lillehammer, NCC-???
Commanding officer: ???
Commision: 2360's-2374
Interesting facts: The Lillehammer was destroyed in 2374 defending the Setlik system against Cardassian forces during the Dominion War.

USS Narvik, NCC-???
Commanding officer: ???
Commision: 2360's-2374
Interesting facts: Destroyed in 2374 defending the Setlik system against Cardassian forces during the Dominion War.

USS Polaris, NCC-???
Commanding officer: ???
Commision: 2360's-2376
Interesting facts: In 2376, the Polaris was operating out of Starbase 51, when Admiral Leonard James Akaar ordered it to assist the USS Gryphon, the USS T'Kumbra and the USS Sagittarius in stopping Hiziki Gard, believed to be a host to a parasite, from reaching Trill. The Polaris and the other ships later fired on, the Gryphon, as they were correct in believing a parasite was aboard the Gryphon and was using it to head to Trill. The Polaris and the others stood down when Kira Nerys had the Gryphon send a message to Captain Solok using the Gryphon's phasers.

USS Sagittarius, NCC-???
Commanding officer: ???
Commision: 2360's-2376
Interesting facts: In 2376, the Sagittarius was operating out of Starbase 51, when Admiral Leonard James Akaar ordered it to assist the USS Gryphon, the USS T'Kumbra and the USS Polaris in stopping Hiziki Gard, believed to be a host to a parasite, from reaching Trill. The Sagittarius and the other ships later fired on the Gryphon, as they were correct in believing a parasite was aboard the Gryphon and was using it to head to Trill. The Sagittarius and the others stood down when Kira Nerys had the Gryphon send a message to Captain Solok using the Gryphon's phasers. The Sagittarius later helped to retrieve the escape pods that had been launched from the Gryphon.

Scenario

Size: 19.4 KB

(Before we begin with this slightly light-hearted scenario, I believe Isacc found a really good scenario with this ship, I looked into it and decided to actually save it for when we do the Nebula class and all its subvariants as it would work really well, also I kind of want all the scenarios to be connected together so we can have a pretty amazing battle at the end of the series with all the Anti-Borg task force ships doing what they do best...fight the Borg!)

10hrs after the battle of the Hugora nebula, the USS Dallas and USS Welshaven have rendezvoused with the USS Isacc and the USS Sentry on their way to Starbase 211 for repairs.

An utterly miserable man sits alone at a white table positioned next to a window he has been staring though for several long minuets. Sighing as the blue figure with white hair sips from a square glass filled with Andorian Ale the main entrance to the lounge/bar hisses open. A young human strides through the doorway. His three golden pips reflect the bars light off of them and directly into the Andorians eyes, catching his attention. The blue man stories and sits upright as the red-shirted officer walks up to him. The Andorian looks him up and down, his shoulders look as though they are carrying the weight of a starship and his face shows only utter exhaustion.

"Excuse me, sir, was I interrupting something?" The commander asks genuinely.

"Oh...no I was just...thinking,"

"If I may ask sir, is everything okay?"

The Andorian had been sitting at the table for some time and every over eager Ensign jumped at the chance to ask if 'everything was alright' he shooed them away, getting more agitated every time. His first officer though was a different officer. Though he was young and had only been assigned to him for about two months he had grown on the captain. He wasn't always in a state of sorrow but the latest casualty reports hit him particularly hard,

"Have a seat lad, you see those battered and worn ships out there," The captain points behind him out of the window were a Steamrunner class with several pockmarks and scorches travels along side the Isacc, "Three ships went into that nebula and only two came out-"

"Yes, the USS Avenge, lost with all hands," The first officer stated as he motioned to a nearby waiter.

"Well one of those hands, the captain, was a close friend of mine... I'm just a little-shaken that's all,"

"How well did you know him?"

"We were best mates at the academy, we were posted on the same ship as Ensigns and well we never stopped being close friends, even when we became captains,"

The first officer was about to say something when a Bolian in civilian clothing holding an empty tray stood at the table.

"Oh yes, could I get a San Donnar Nerve tonic please?" The commander asked the waiter who nodded and strode back to the bar.

"Well sir, I have some bad news," He had a pained expression on his face and, reaching into his back pocket produced a PADD. Handing the device over to the captain so he could examine it.

He watched as the captain began to read and his inquisitive expression slowly changed into one of anger. Looking away he smashed the PADD onto the table and gritted his teeth.

"How dare they! Might as well be kicking us while we are down!" The captain fretted as he stormed off. The first officer looked shocked but relieved, he thought that went a lot better than it did in his head. After a few moments he reached for the PADD, luckily it wasn't damaged. On it was a direct message to all Starfleet personnel, it simply detailed in cruel coldness the surprise attack on earth. Starfleet, the Klingons and the Romulans are now at war with the Breen who have sided with the Dominion Alliance.

The captain, was known for being a little, short-tempered. As he fumed and stomped his way towards the Turbolift the ship was unexpectedly shaken violently from side to side. The captain and the few officers in the hallway fell over as the Red Alert klaxons started.

=^= Bridge report, what is going on! =^= The captain yelled as he collected himself.

=^= Sir, three Breen cruisers and two escorts have suddenly attacked the taskforce, I don't know how we didn't pick them up on sensors! =^= The ships tactical officer reported in a horse voice.

The captain ran towards the turbolift, out of the corner of his eye he could see the commander sprinting out of the lounge he was cratering a transparent object and as the captain entered the turbolift and turned to face the doorway he saw that it was, in fact, his drink.

"Nick... is that your drink?" The captain asked amused as the first officer entered the lift.

"Well I couldn't just leave it there could I?" Will protested.

"We are in the middle of a life or death situation an-and your first priority is... your drink?" The two officers looked at each other for a few seconds then simultaneously burst out laughing. In fact they continued laughing so hard that they didn't notice the turbolift reach its destination at the frantic and panicked bridge. The entire bridge stopped to turn and see what all the commotion was about. When the captain finally wiped away his tears of laughter and noticed they had arrived at their destination he cleared his through and tucked at his uniform.

"Uh..what's the status?"

"The USS Sentry has sustained massive damage and its shields are at 17%" The tactical officer answered.

"Right, we can't deploy fighter wings at warp can we?"

"No, sir,"

"Than pull the fleet out of warp,"

Sitting back in his chair he saw the starts slow down.

The Breen fleet overshot and pulled out of warp out of firing range, giving time for the Federation fleet to regroup.

The two Sabre class vessels lined up with the Norway and the Steamrunner behind it. As the Breen fleet closed in the captain noticed how close all the ships were. The two Sabres simultaneously increased throttle to full impulse and plot a course to intercept the two escorts. The Norway began to deploy its extensive war-time wing of six Peregrine fighters and four Runabouts equipped for bomber duty. The Steamrunner held position. The two fleets closed the distance. The Breen concentrated fire on the Norway, practically ignoring the Sabres as predicted. The Steamrunner hid behind the Norways narrow frame only moving out of cover to unleash a barrage of torpedo fire. The Sabres on the other hand arced in separate diagonal directions around the Breen fleet until they could zero in on the escorts and unleash a punishing amount of forward firepower, the Breen forces, as predicted didn't see the Sabres as a threat until it was too late and after having their escorts shields slowly withered away the Sabres destroyed one of the vessels and severely damaged the other. The Norway now moved to directly engage the enemy rather than torpedo fire as it had deployed its fighter wings. The fighters would distract the enemy and protect the bombers who would target critical systems such as weapons and engines. The Steamrunner stood its ground and continued to unleash an almost seamless barrage of torpedoes. The Breen were quickly destroyed and the taskforse continued its limp back to Starbase 211.

Thank you very much for reading, I am very sorry this weeks scenario was nothing compared to last weeks, I didn't have the time to write a proper story but don't fret, I promise to redeem myself for next week as we look into the Defiant and then the Akira. Don't forget the Akira's scenario will be a massive one were all our ships and characters join together to fight... the Borg.

I would like to know your thoughts on the ship and also anything you would like to have been done differently.

Also, big thanks to the editor, I know it must be really tough to edit all my mistakes, without you I don't this SFS would look even half as decent!

Until next time,
Live Long and Prosper!

Another great article!

Thanks!

Again I would like to apologise for the scenario being so anti-climatic. I promise I will redeem myself in the final issue of the Anti-Borg Ship set.

Appart from that, what are your thoughts on the Norway?
Tue 24 Apr, 2018 8:30 AM
I always thought the Norway was pretty small but yet its supposed to be some sort of carrier. I guess it must really be minimalist inside as a warship so there's lots of room for hanger bays for all those fighters/shuttles.

Cool article though!
Tue 24 Apr, 2018 9:20 AM
Thanks!

From what research has told me its supposed to be an all-purpose cruiser so the producers could slap the ship in the background of any scene.
Thu 26 Apr, 2018 1:00 AM
Well done, Kirk. With the Norway being what it is, must've been like pulling teeth just to get enough info for an article.

Hopefully now that we're down to the Akira and Defiant that shouldn't be much of a problem.

(Many thanks for the shout out, good to know my rambles are helping Big Grin)
Thu 26 Apr, 2018 6:45 AM
Thanks for the positive feedback!

No need to thank me, you had a magnificent idea and I simply couldn't disregard it or waist in on the Norway.

Appart from that do you think I should change anything?
Thu 26 Apr, 2018 10:58 PM
Na, nothing in need of changing.

Hopefully now that it is just the Akira and Defiant for this line, it should be easier to get an article going.
Fri 27 Apr, 2018 7:15 AM
Yeah!

I have been so busy this week to the point I haven't been able to do any research yet so...gonna be an interesting weekend.

Speaking of which what kind of name do you think this series should have apart from Ships of the Fleet Sunday?

I say this because for most people on UFP Sunday is a different day compared to myself and others.

Only thing i can come up with right now is something like Starship Breakdown or Fleet Breakdown or Tour of the Drydock.

No clue if any of these are good for a series name.
Fri 27 Apr, 2018 9:54 PM
tour of the Drydock sounds really interesting actually. Maybe we could turn this series into an in universe RP thing?

Thanks, j_huongvilay!

Anything you think I should do differently. (Do keep in mind that this weeks is the Defiant and will have tonnes more information and a far superior scenario compared to the Norway)
Sat 28 Apr, 2018 6:13 AM
If you're up for taking it in-universe you could certainly try.

Could have an Academy teacher escorting some cadets around a drydock, pulling up info on the docked ships and giving hypothetical scenarios.

Can’t believe I actually missed this! Great article again and more great work! Looking forward to this week!

Thanks, Avenger!

And that's a great idea, Isaac! I really just want to have fun with these articles so I might experiment with a little RP.
