A Look at the Alliance Rex Pilot Escort

A brief overview of the Alliance Rex Pilot Escort, its pros and cons, as well as a review.

As Star Trek Online's 14th anniversary event on PC nears its end, I will be looking at the new ship rewarded for completion of the event, the T6 Alliance Rex Pilot Escort. For context, I will compare this ship to two similar escort ships I have flown, the T5-U Defiant and the T6 Terran Adamant Heavy Raider. I'll be looking at the ships from a more casual perspective, rather than a competitive one. This isn't to determine which ship is the "best," or discuss any optimal builds, but to discuss my impressions of them.

The Alliance Rex Pilot Escort is a hybrid of the Federation Defiant Class and a Jem'Hadar Fighter. The result is quite a unique-looking ship with an array of features from both classes that influenced its design. It comes equipped with four antiproton dual cannons, a quantum torpedo launcher, and two antiproton turrets, all standard issue. Unlike either the Defiant or Adamant, the Rex features a Lieutenant Tactical/Miracle Worker seat and a Lieutenant Commander Engineering/Pilot seat, allowing the use of those specialization Bridge Officer abilities. Like other escorts, it is a smaller, more nimble ship. As a pilot ship, it has access to pilot maneuvers, which give a nice boost to speed and mobility in and out of combat. This ship also features a built-in cloak, so it does not need to use the T5 Defiant's universal console for cloaking. Unlike the Terran Adamant, however, this is not a battle cloak and cannot be activated in combat.

The most obvious Jem'Hadar influence can be seen in this ship's access to wingmates and its experimental weapon, the Inertial Polaron Shunt. The two wingmates appear as matching Rex ships and can be controlled using wingmate commands. The Inertial Polaron Shunt weapon uses energy from the ship's impulse engines to deal polaron damage and can trigger more often with higher speeds. Reflecting the fact that it is a Khitomer Alliance ship, the Rex also comes equipped with an Elite Alliance Squadron Beacon universal console, which summons Alliance escort ships to fight alongside you on a two-minute cooldown. The ships summoned by this console will even follow your wingmate commands. The console additionally provides 8% Critical Severity and 10% Flight Speed. Finally, completing this ship's mastery track unlocks the Inertial Supremacy starship trait. This trait causes your AoE weapon attacks, such as Beams: Fire at Will, to apply a damage resistance debuff to your target that increases based on your maximum potential speed.

For me, flying the Rex has been a blast. It feels noticeably more durable than either the T5 Defiant or the T6 Terran Adamant and can certainly take a hit. It is perhaps slightly less maneuverable than the Adamant, but the pilot maneuvers make up for that, and are also just plain fun to use. While I like the Adamant's Intelligence abilities, I found them a bit cumbersome to use and much prefer using the Rex's Pilot abilities. The wingmates are fun to play with and give a sort of light carrier feel to it. Activating the Beacon console essentially gives you a small army at your command. Cloaking is always useful, both for sneaking around and for getting a damage boost at the start of combat. While the Adamant's battle cloak is useful, I don't feel that the Rex lacking it is a drawback, and not having it has had no real impact on my gameplay. The Polaron Shunt experimental weapon seems to hit reasonably hard and triggers consistently. I've also enjoyed having access to some Miracle Worker and Pilot Bridge Officer abilities to play with. I have not had much opportunity to experiment with the Inertial Supremacy trait, so I honestly cannot say anything positive or negative about that. All these things together result in a powerful feeling ship that can dish out damage and still have some survivability.

In conclusion, the Rex is an excellent little ship that is a lot of fun to fly. It has proven to be a worthy addition to my roster of ships, and I'll be using it. Although it may not be the best, or most optimal, ship for competitive play, it is great for everything I have wanted to do with it.

It sounds like you enjoy it, which is always good to hear. Let me ask you, have you used any of the "OG" Pilot Escorts, and if so, how does it compare to them? Obviously losing CMDR spec capability will sting some, but sometimes it can be worth it if the ship otherwise scratches some particular itch.

I haven't had the chance to fly any of the other pilot escorts yet personally. I'm actually relatively recently getting back into the game after a long time out, even though I've played since launch, so I never got around to trying the specialized ships like this until now. The abilities I have had a chance to mess around with are Intelligence and Temporal Agent, and now Miracle Worker and Pilot. The pilot bridge officer abilities seem a bit niche, but I've been using Pilot Team and enjoying that well enough so far. Miracle Worker seems to have room for a few useful options, even though the seat is only a Lieutenant seat. I'm not sure how that compares to having a Command seat, but I do like it!

I've always preferred flying escorts in general the entire time I've played. Way back years ago though, I did also play around with a carrier and found that pretty fun too. I haven't gotten a chance to try a strike wing escort yet, but the Rex's wingmates are great and kind of carrier-like. So for me, it fills a nice spot of giving a nimble, speedy escort that also has some pets and more survivability.

Nice read! I'm glad you like the ship. Ever since they introduced the Jem'Hadar to the game, I've always been fond of the ships. My Jem'Hadar toon flies the Vanguard Warships, and it's a very fun and powerful ship to pilot.

If I were you, I would focus on Command and Miracle Worker and leave Pilot until last. It's indeed a fun ship, but apart from mastering it, I haven't used it much myself yet.

So far I feel there are two things Pilot ships do well. 1) Trigger the Cold-Hearted trait without using A2B build (this might not apply to you if youu don't have access to that Trait). 2) If you want to try a single-target build, Reroute Reserves to Weapons can feel like a real buzzsaw, if you make sure your Engine power stays high enough to use it. I'm trying that one these days on a Legendary Bugship, and it's pretty fun.

If you want to try more Miracle Worker, in an Escort package, may I recommend the DaVinci (T6 Saber)? Fun in a beautiful design (I like the classic Saber, and the refit Gladius looks myself).

Jestersmith, excellent taste in ships! I do love the JHV Warship. It's the ride of choice for my main Jem'Hadar character.

Thank you for the input and recommendations! I'm hoping to complete the event campaign that's going on to get my hands on the prizes and try out some other ships too. It'll be a while yet before that can be completed, but I'll definitely keep these in mind!

My main, ZenMasterChip likes his Miracle Worker Escort picked up early in the game because he returned to STO wanting to buzz around in a little escort and explore how tough it could be if someone loved it enough to deck it out with anything that glitters. This ship falls into the same category as an Escort, and by your description, it appears to be the kind of ship Master Zen would like! Since he (ok, enough of that...) I like flying my little buzz bomb, and, being reasonably early in gameplay, shoved all my best into it as I got it. aka a mishmash of stuff, but a beam boat. Loads of fun and zippy. Because of this article, I am looking forward to throwing all my junk into this ship, or at least as much as will fit and also let me use what came with it; I will do that as soon as the current event is over so I can try it out on a few patrols. I expect I will enjoy the Rex very much! I love being the wingman!
So far, my game plan is to fly any ship that let's me become little fly that posters and irritates the big ships and makes them want to swat me. I love to irritate the heck out of the enemy! :-) So far, so Good. I don't know if my ship build is any good; but, I only died once in the last week! Woo Hoo :-) I see advanced gameplay around the corner!
