Unless you've been living under a rock for the past five years, you will have heard about the growing popularity of browser-based games which have reached into a variety of genres. From titles such as Quake Live, Astro Empires and even the failed 2012 title, Star Trek: Infinite Space, browser-based games all have one thing in common and that's multiplayer.[PRBREAK][/PRBREAK]

The developers of Star Trek: Alien Domain, GameSamba, say that the game will be playable in every well-known browser and will be released sometime in 2015. Until now, they've elected to keep things quiet since Alien Domain entered closed beta at the same time as its announcement late last month.

Once the game is released, users will have the choice of playing either as the Federation or Klingon factions and will be told to build/maintain a base of operations with accompanying fleets in fluidic space. It doesn't take a genius therefore to work out that Species 8472 will be involved in some way, likely as the main antagonist. I suppose Janeway's diplomacy didn't work out after all...

The game is confirmed to have multiplayer functionality, but information so far suggests it might not be on an MMO scale. We suspect therefore, that the game will be playable with friends and perhaps a few strangers but is likely not going to include features such as global chats or groups.

Star Trek fans have had their fair share of bad games in recent years, what with last year's release of 'Star Trek' that then ultimately received criticism from J.J. Abrams himself. So while Star Trek: Alien Domain does bring something different to the franchise, it's not easy to determine how well the game will sit with fans. In reviewing what we do know and the screenshots available, there's an element of simply painting a Star Trek coating onto a browser base which in reality, is a little overrated. Browser games tend to have a limit on graphics and overall user experience, so perhaps GameSamba's strategy with Alien Domain is to target the more casual Star Trek fan, who cares less of how something looks and more about accessibility of play.

If you want to find out more, their website gives some details but admittedly information is still quite thin, presumably because the game is still in closed beta.

WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE IN THE GAME? DO YOU THINK STAR TREK FANS WANT A BROWSER-BASED GAME?
