Donald Faison labels Star Trek as lame!

Did he just...? No really, did he just say that?

Did he just...? No really, did he just say that?[PRBREAK][/PRBREAK]

Mr. Donald Faison has recently been a guest on the late night show Conan, and has has some rather bold remarks to jab at the entire Star Trek fandom - especially those who are most interested in TOS.

Size: 58.7 KBFaison as Doctor Chris Turk in ScrubsThe two-time BET Comedy Award-winning actor has risen to fame through his acting in the medical comedy-drama Scrubs. Faison plays the role of Christopher Duncan Turk, the Chief of Surgery at the Sacred Heart Hospital, where the series takes place.

Faison mostly compared Star Trek to Star Wars. Star Wars had all of this action, and these fantasies... [Star Trek] is kinda lame, he said, before comparing the two series' action scenes. The Millenium Falcon did all of these spins and everything, and the starship Enterprise just went straight! He proceeded to label everything as 'slow,' before showing a clip from the iconic Kirk versus Gorn battle. Faison commented on the video; Of course Kirk is going to look like a badass, the [Gorn] is swingin' like this the whole time, making slow punching motions for emphasis.

It makes you wonder, has he seen any of the grandiose space battles that are some of the most recognized in the industry for their technical expertise in CGI and model coordination and design? And lets be real - who would rather watch an episode of Scrubs than the glorious battle between Kirk and Gorn?

Something makes me think Mr. Faison hasn't seen anything to do with the Dominion...

It's a good thing you detailed who this guy was, cause I had no idea...

...and there is so much wrong with his statements I don't even know where to begin...

Ooooh, Turk. I instantly recognized his face, but had no idea who "Donald Faison" was.

This is kind of like comparing Mythbusters to How It's Made and saying the latter is lame because it doesn't have enough explosions.

I don't have any words for this, his opinions are his own, but they are very silly, he is comparing apples and oranges here, the first Star Wars film had a much larger budget.

Memory alpha puts TOS at an average of $190,635 per episode for series 1, that's $5,719,050 for all 30 episodes compared to the budget for the first Star Wars film of $11,000,000.

Big difference, we are also talking 2 different decades.

Or this scene is one of my favorite, mostly because of my TNG favor.

With all due respect.

It's one thing having your own opinion, but it's a totally different animal to go and call someone else's fandom 'lame'. Hence the rather... biased article Tongue Out

Has there ever been a whale being transported from the past into the future - in a starship - in order so save earth in star wars? No. because in Star Wars, Earth is just the planet coffee comes from. That's why Star Trek is not lame. And that's why you can't compare them.

Curzon does kinda have a point, but this is a Trek community so we're normally expected to rush to it's defense.

... considering how many members of this community would love nothing better than to see many aspects of current trek-dom crash and burn (JJTrek, STO, etc), I find it kinda refreshing to see us charge in like the frickin virtual cavalry to protect our fandom.

... even if it s a bit childish in nature Big Grin

He didn't really even mention the fandom, though, as far as I could tell. fandom of something is not the same as that something, so holding a negative opinion isn't the same as an attack on the fandom.

Now if we want to talk about Shatner's Get a Life Sketch, that's different.

Has there ever been a whale being transported from the past into the future - in a starship - in order so save earth in star wars? No. because in Star Wars, Earth is just the planet coffee comes from. That's why Star Trek is not lame. And that's why you can't compare them.
Now that you mention it, as much as I enjoyed Star Trek IV, I find the concept behind the story to be extremely lame. Maybe it's in the crazy enough to work category.

On a side note *puts nerd hat on* there is no Earth in Star Wars as it takes place a long long time ago in a galaxy far away.

anchorman well that escalated quickly

I'm a huge fan of Scrubs and Star Trek. At the end of the day Donald Faison is entitled to voice his opinion. Doesn't diminish my opinion of him at all. I disagree with him, but his opinion doesn't make him a bad person.

"Christmas in the StarsEdit

Christmas in the Stars, a 1980 record album, has R2-D2, C-3PO, and Chewbacca, among others, singing Christmas songs and celebrating the Earth holiday. "

It's got to be real!

I think I am going to file that in the same box as the Christmas special and forget it exists.

I agree with Donald Faison.

*Grabs popcorn*

Seriously, I do agree with him about TOS, most of the episodes were pretty cheesy and lame but I suppose that's because it's 60's Television, everything was cheesy in those days Tongue Out Even TNG season one wasn't brilliant.

Star Trek is more widely known for it's morality subjects, bringing into question Humanity in it's current state, ethics etc. rather than pew-pew action. Though, It is nice when we do get action sequences.

I would like to quote Ian Mckellen on Star Trek when he said this 'Star Trek and Tolkien are not your run-of-the-mill entertainment. They invite the audience to think and be intriqued'

Of course, I still love both universes with the same amount of passion Smile

Cool story - I once tried to watch an episode of scrubs. Then I realised that its just an unfunny pseudo-comedy TV programme which follows a far more pathetic formula than most sitcoms these days.

Agreed.

And well said by the way.

I would agree that Mr. Faison's comment negatively reflects on Star Trek but his example is a miniscule sampling of the whole collection of Star Trek cannon. it also seems to me he hasn't seen much Trek since TOS if he feels that way. Still I personally do not see this as an attack on the Star Trek as much as just one guys opinion stated publicly. I think JJ's attempt to "reboot" the franchise more insulting than Mr. Faison's opinion "that Science and action is lame..." when referring to Star Trek. That aside, comparing Star Trek to Star Wars is very much comparing Apples and Oranges. I feel they offer some similarities but I very much appreciate their contrast even more. And as for Scrubs was probably one of the best nonsense no brainer sitcom comedies I've seen.

Thanks for the Article, loved it!

Most things, if you take them out of context makes the other look bad
