Over the past several years, Anniversary patches have been growing in pomp and splendor. With each successive year, more features, ships and changes are made. The first anniversary event brought our current Earth Spacedock Exterior, as well as the first of many festive ‘Party Poppers’ we’ve all grown to love. Year two brought us the Odyssey and Bortas class starships, along with a brief shakedown cruise mission. Year Three is when Anniversary events truly became something spectacular. Along with the Ambassador and Kamarang class starships, Cryptic Studios brought in the mission Temporal Ambassador, Featuring Voice-Over work by Denise Crosby, who retained her role as Natasha Yar. Last Year’s Anniversary event and featured episode A Step Between Stars marked the introduction the Solanae Class, the Nov Class and the Aves class starships, and featured Voice Over work by Tim Russ as Tuvok.
This Anniversary is slated to bring a new featured episode, starring Garrett Wang, and rewards players with a Kobali Cruiser, an overhaul of the Romulan Mystery story arc, a completely redesigned Bridge Officer Training System, Secondary Deflectors, the Command Specialization, and the Vaaduar Lockbox. For details about each of the aforementioned points, please navigate to the associated page by using the button to the bottom right hand corner of the article.

ANNIVERSARY MISSION AND REWARDS
Starting on January 29th, Federation, Romulan and Klingon players who have reached level 10 will be able to run the anniversary mission “ Dust to Dust ”. This mission will take place after the events of “ Takedown ”, where players and an alliance of Delta Quadrant species won a resounding victory over Gaul and the Vaadwaur. Players have been recalled to Kobali Prime by Captain Kim to assist him in an investigation. While the mission will be a permanent addition, the rewards will be reduced in splendor come February 26 - more on that in the following paragraph.
The Featured Episode grants a number of rewards. For completing the mission you will be given the option of either a Kobali Uniform or a Polaron Beam Array (right now the Kobali Uniform is only attainable the 1st time you complete the mission, replaying the mission will not give you an option to pick the uniform up as a reward.), with the Kobali Space Set becoming available over the course of the next month, stats and dates on the set pieces are as followed.
Available February 5th | Available February 12th | Available February 19th |
In addition to the rewards at the end of the mission there is the addition of a unique 'Kobali Engineering/Command Bridge Officer' that you can attain during the mission once you reach a certain point.
Along with “ Dust to Dust ”, Q will be making a return to all three faction’s homeworlds with a new mini-game designed to reward players with “ Q-mendations ” and Omega traces. Omega traces can be used to create new Omega upgrades via R&D System, while Q-mendations are used to purchase the Kobali Cruiser. Players need 1000 Q-mendations before February 26 in order to unlock this starship. Four-hundred are given at the end of the featured episode.
Kobali starships are known for their exceptional ability to provide support to their allies in large scale starship combat. The Samsar Cruiser is a durable Kobali Tier 6 cruiser that was outfitted to fill the role of a mobile command center.

CONTENT CHANGES AND ADDITIONS
With today’s patch, there are two major changes coming to available in-game content, these are the addition of the Foundry Top Three system and the Romulan Mystery Episode overhaul. Along with these two changes there have been several minor tweaks to the queued content, including the removal of the infamous No-Win Scenario due to a pending overhaul of that mission to bring it into line with newer content, several adjustments to Cure Space Advanced, to make it slightly more difficult, and Crystalline Entity. Details on these minor changes can be found in the linked patch notes.
ROMULAN MYSTERY EPISODE OVERHAUL
Star Trek Online launched five years ago with three independent campaigns: A War against the Klingons, Skirmishes with the Romulans, and a fight against the True Way, a Cardassian splinter faction. Since launch, several Featured Episode arcs have been added which have significantly raised the bar as to the quality of missions players can expect. Over time, Cryptic has gone back and refurbished past episodes to bring them into line with newer content.
With this patch, eleven of the more clunky, outdated and now-retconned episodes have been removed in favor of 3 refurbished missions, which has taken elements of the eleven removed and one brand-new episode. Cryptic’s Descriptions for these episodes are as follows:
“ EMPRESS SELA ”
“ DESPERATE MEASURES ”
“ SHADOW PLAY ”
“ TARIS ”
FOUNDRY TOP THREE
For those who don’t know, the Foundry is Star Trek Online’s User-Generated content system for player vs. entity missions. Players have many great options to customize their missions to tell the story they want to present to their fellow players from dialogue, enemies, and costumes, to maps, and locations.
However, since the Foundry’s release in March 2011, the system has been starved for player attention. Promotion for content has largely fallen to community efforts like Podcast UGC (http://www.podcastugc.com/) and the foundry forums on Star Trek Online’s official boards. With the addition of the Foundry Top Three system, players will have the opportunity to access the three top-rated missions directly from any planet in any sector block. This system will only allow missions that have passed review status and are ready for mass-player consumption. Missions that are race, faction or level restricted will not be viewable unless a player meets the requirements.
As an added bonus, players who complete foundry missions are entitled to the rewards of the repeatable mission “ Investigate Officer Reports ” , which rewards 960 dilithium.
[PAGE]BRIDGE OFFICER TRAINING REVAMP[/PAGE]
BRIDGE OFFICER TRAINING REVAMP
Probably the most substantive change with this update is the Bridge Officer overhaul. With this update, bridge officers will have a substantial improvement in functionality, where they will be able to learn, and retain the training in any eligible bridge officer ability. For example, if you have a tactical bridge officer and an inclination to do so, you have the ability to ‘train’ the bridge officer in every tactical ability in-game, at every level, and swap powers at the click of a button. This change is a monumental quality of life improvement, making it possible to run every combination of build with only 5 bridge officers, whereas before, you would have needed dozens to do the same thing.
Along with the ability to swap abilities, Starship Captains have the ability to train existing Bridge Officers in the existing Intelligence Specialization, and the new Command Specialization, thus allowing players the option to keep up with new and exciting builds, without having to purchase more Bridge Officer Slots to accommodate new builds.
Lastly, the majority of Captain and Bridge Officer Ability Icons recently got a face-lift by Thomas Marrone, one of the UI Artists at Cryptic to make them more intuitive and recognizable as to what the ability actually does, going off the icon alone. Translations of Old to New can be found below.

[PAGE]SECONDARY DEFLECTORS[/PAGE]
SECONDARY DEFLECTORS
For nearly two years, Secondary Deflectors have been teased as an addition to bring Science Starships in-line with their Tanky cruisers and the nimble and firepower heavy Escort craft. With last year’s featured episode, players were teased at things to come, as the Dyson Science destroyers all featured Secondary Deflector slots. Since then, players have been chomping at the bit for this addition.
Earlier this month, we found out details on what types of secondary deflectors would be offered and what kind of mods they contain. A basic overview can be found at the bottom of this page.
On top of the deflector’s primary stat, there are five modifiers which are generated randomly on each deflector. The mods are as follows:
Sensor Analysis (-Defense)
Sensor Analysis (+Heal)
Sensor Analysis (+Damage)

[PAGE]COMMAND SPECIALIZATION[/PAGE]
COMMAND SPECIALIZATION
For the second time in the past three months, Cryptic has added a Specialization to STO. These specializations in laymen’s terms are STO’s answer to talent trees that other MMOs feature. Each time a player completes a level beyond 50, they are rewarded with a point. With the addition of the command tree, there are 90 potential slots to allocate points in the following trees: Command, Intelligence, Commando, and Pilot. The Intelligence and Command trees each require 30 points to complete and have an assortment of kit modules, bridge officer abilities and starships.
The Command Tree with its associated Bridge Officer abilities, kit modules and Specialization Tree are Star Trek Online’s first earnest attempt at a non-science class dedicated to team support and buffing. Most Bridge Officer and kit abilities are directly related to increasing your team’s overall damage output or damage resistance rating, with a few abilities designed to do massive damage. For a complete breakdown of the specialization tree’s abilities, Bridge Officer Powers, and Kit modules, see the chart below.

Boff/Kit | Coordinate Bombing Strike | Ground | Create a series of spatial charges in a straight line between you and your foe. After a short delay, they will detonate sequentially, dealing moderate kinetic damage to any foes in the blast zone. |
Boff/Kit | Delegated Devastation | Ground | You grant your entire team a Damage Bonus with energy weapons, at the cost of setting your own weapons Offline for several seconds. |
Boff/Kit | Hammer and Anvil | Ground | Issue a team-wide offensive command to crush the enemy from both sides. Allies that strike any enemy from behind will gain a substantial bonus to their Flanking Damage, while those that strike an enemy’s front will receive increased Damage Resistance. |
Boff/Kit | Overwhelm Shields | Ground | Mark a targeted foe, to coordinate your allies’ weapon fire. All energy weapon attacks made against the marked foe will drain additional shields, and restore a small amount of shields to the ally that fired upon them. |
Boff/Kit | Return Fire | Ground | Instantly remove a portion of any remaining cooldowns on all teammates, while also granting a small Damage Boost. The severity of both of these effects is higher, the more dire the situation is for each teammate – the lower their current Health, the higher the benefit they gain. |
Boff/Kit | Sanctuary | Ground | Create a perfect respite on the battlefield, for a short amount of time. While within the Sanctuary Field, you gain perfect Stealth and a Heal-Over-Time effect. However, all abilities are Disabled and your Run Speed is decreased. The field is large enough for allies to gain these same benefits if they are very close to your position. |
Boff/Kit | Shock and Awe | Ground | Mark a targeted foe, to coordinate your allies’ weapon fire. While marked, the Damage Resistance of the foe is reduced. If sufficient damage is dealt while the mark is active, the target will become Disabled and incapable of acting. |
Boff/Kit | Strategic Analysis | Ground | Requires Combat. Grants a team-wide Damage Bonus and Damage Resistance increase that continues to increase the longer the Command Officer remains in combat. Higher ranks of this ability do not scale faster, but have longer maximum durations, and therefore higher maximum boosts. The effect ends immediately if combat ends. |
Boff/Kit | Take Cover | Ground | Issue a team-wide command to Crouch. Any teammate that follows your orders will gain a large Damage Resistance boost as well as Immunity to all Control Effects and a Heal-Over-Time. Those that do not Crouch will only receive Damage Resistance. |
Boff/Kit | Timely Intervention | Ground | Instantly rescue a nearby teammate from imminent defeat. Activate this ability to initiate a site-to-site transport to the nearest ally that is below 50% health, and render them untargetable for a short period of time. This ability may only be activated if a nearby ally will be saved by it. (Note: Ally becomes invalid target for this ability for a period of time after being saved by it, preventing chain-immunity.) |
Boff | Ambush Marker | Space | Cannot be used while in Combat. Place an Ambush Marker at your current location, which will grant a high Stealth value to all nearby allies. If any Foe is drawn to the location, the Ambush triggers, granting all nearby allies a large Damage Bonus and summoning additional Attack Craft to pummel the unsuspecting enemy. |
Boff | Call Emergency Artillery | Space | Even the most battle-hardened commander can occasionally use the support of heavy-hitting bombers. Use this ability to summon a set of three Attack Craft that are equipped with heavy-hitting kinetic mortar barrages. These ships will warp in at your current location and follow a trajectory toward your targeted foe, dealing periodic kinetic damage to any foes along that path before warping out again. |
Boff | Concentrate Firepower | Space | Mark a targeted foe, to coordinate your allies’ weapon fire. All torpedo attacks made against the marked foe deal additional Kinetic damage that bypasses shields. Striking the marked target also has a chance of granting a free High Yield Torpedo I mode to the attacking ally. |
Boff | Needs of the Many | Space | Your current Shield Capacity is instantly set to zero. All teammates will, in return, gain an amount of Secondary Shielding that scales proportionately to the percentage of shields that were sacrificed. |
Boff | Overwhelm Emitters | Space | Mark a targeted foe, to coordinate your allies’ weapon fire. All energy weapon attacks made against the marked foe will drain additional shields, and restore a small amount of shields to the ally that fired upon them. |
Boff | Phalanx Formation | Space | By following a series of markers that will be created relative to your current location, you, and all allies that follow, will gain increasingly impressive offensive bonuses to aid you in combat. Each of the three markers successfully navigated grants larger boosts, and all of them stack with one another. |
Boff | Rally Point | Space | Place a holographic marker near the targeted foe’s location. Any allies (or self) that enter the designated Rally Point will instantly have a large portion of their Hull and Shields restored. Each ally may only benefit from a single Rally Point once. |
Boff | Reroute Power from Life Support | Space | While active, all four ship subsystems will gradually gain additional current power, and you will be immune to all effects that would knock subsystems offline. However, your Crew will also gradually become disabled, and the Cooldown of all abilities will suffer greater and greater penalties the longer this ability remains active. It can be turned off at will. Only for use in the most dire of circumstances. |
Boff | Subspace Interception | Space | Instantly rescue a nearby allied starship from imminent defeat. Activate this ability to initiate a quick warp jump to the nearest ally that is below 50% hull, and render them untargetable for a short period of time. This ability may only be activated if a nearby ally will be saved by it. (Note: Ally becomes invalid target for this ability for a period of time after being saved by it, preventing chain-immunity.) |
Boff | Suppression Barrage | Space | Enhance your weapons to pass a debilitating effect on to any foe you fire upon. Enemies that are Suppressed will have their Movement and Damage reduced, while also becoming incapable of targeting any Torpedoes, Mines or Fighters that are allied with the user of Suppression Barrage. |
