Star Trek Voyager, left a lot to be desired for some. However it opened up a new frontier for Star Trek. It also pushed the envelope for the Starfleet crew it showed. How far were they willing to go to get home. Well a new Star Trek fan film, set 10 years after the events of Voyager, is pushing that envelope a bit further.
After a 10 year drought of any notable prime universe love, the brilliant minds at Star Trek Renegades LLC have finally collated all of their hard work into the finished product - Star Trek: Renegades! The LA premier of the most recently released fan-made Star Trek film will happen on August 1 at the Crest Theatre. Tickets are still on sale for a $20 donation on their website through PayPal.
Renegades throws viewers into the deep and dark looming fears of the end of the Federation. Dilithium supplies (the resource that controls antimatter-matter reactions and in turn, faster than light travel) are wearing thin, while temporal and spatial anomalies are cropping up, swallowing whole worlds - and they do not appear to be natural phenomena.
The movie itself was almost entirely financed by loyal Star Trek fans on the crowdfunding website website IndieGoGo - over $130,000 USD was donated by almost 1,500 people in just a month! With the original goal of $20,000, fans were expecting great things for the project, and from the trailer released.
Unfortunately not everyone is a fan of the trailer or the music video that was released for A new face for the Star Trek universe. Star Trek Renegades. Reddit user Donners22 said "I'm glad they finally got to that point. Things seemed to have gone very quiet for a while. I'm far from won over by the quality of what I've seen so far, but it's an achievement to get to release."
From what has been shown in the production posts over on their website, and from the trailer above, the movie is set to follow very closely to established canon in terms of previous events, however, just like Star Trek: Enterprise, the production team have a huge scope of leeway as it is not being written in between two set canonical events, rather, afterwards. This has enabled the film to become more 'freestyle' than a normal Star Trek movie would - for example, both the uniforms and the Starfleet ship are quite different to what one may expect.
Renegades is a Tim Russ film, and from what we can see in the preview, it does appear that Tuvok may be making an appearance. We'll also see Walter Koenig as Admiral Pavel Chekov. As well as a few other notable actors from the franchise.
If you're in the LA area you can watch the premier, for a $20 donation, at the Crest Theater on August 1. The show is at 4:30, with doors opening at 3:30. You can follow the Renegades on their website, Facebook, and on Twitter.
