As the USS Moncton prepares to depart for battle exercises, it's crew prepares. Her crew is the longest tenured in the fleet & they all felt uneasy about this mission. What if they were attacked? What if the ship suffered a catastrophic failure of its warp core? What if......Nothing happens? That question there is the most unusual that is asked. the Moncton is one of the oldest ships in the fleet, a 121 year old reliant class vessel that has went through more refit time than any other older ship in its time. This was finally her last voyage. She showed her scars & age quite well, Her steel gray skin blemished by the impact marks of phaser fire. They were like badges of honor.
She pulled out of spacedock for the last time. Her crew, after this mission, would prepare her to be sent to the federation Naval Shipyard Museum. A sacred place where the most honored of ships, after their time has passed, would be interned to the caretakers of the yard & preserved for all to see. She was a relic of the past & lived to see peace with the Klingons take hold, a sort of peace with the Romulans, the genesis Disaster & controversy, the crew of the old Enterprise save earth as she ferried VIP's to & from earth.
If a ship had feelings, the Moncton would feel proud of her life, but sad that her usefulness has come to an end. After the mission, her captain made a replica of the plaque with the quote:
"Of all the souls that I have met, his was the most......human."
James T. Kirk Eulogy for Capt. Spock.
