An area where Star Trek (and Star Trek Online for that matter) could have been a little more authentic would have been in registry numbers.
Take U.S. Naval warships for example, which I believe is what Star Trek took their basic fleet ideas from. Each type of ship has a different prefix. CV= aircraft carrier, LCC= Amphibious Communications and Command, DD= Destroyer.
Therefore, LPH-1 would be Amphibious Helicopter Carrier One.
The mistake Star Trek made was confusing ship names and registry numbers. While all U.S. Navy ships have the prefix USS, they do not have the same registry prefix.
I doubt you'd ever see a change, but it would have been a nice way to identify a ship.

I kind of like this idea. It would make identifying ships much easier.
In just looking through some Star Trek wikipedia pages on ships, all ships have some basic classification of some type. "Heavy Exploration Cruiser", "Heavy Cruiser", "Light Cruiser", "Heavy Escort", etc.
BTW, does anyone know what "NCC" stands for?

From what I have found NCC doens't actually stand for anything. According to Wiki and a couple other links: "NCC doesn't stand for anything. It was devised by Matt Jefferies, art director of the first Star Trek series. Jefferies, who is a pilot, based NCC on 20th century aircraft registration codes. In such 20th century usage, an "N" first letter refers to an aircraft registered in the USA. A "C" second letter refers to a civil aircraft. Jefferies added a second "C", just because he thought it looked better. Think of it as being like the arbitrary three-letter code that's part of automobile license plate numbers in many states." (Quoted from Wiki).
"According to non-canon print sources, "NCC" is short for "Naval Construction Code", "Navigational Contact Code" or "Naval Construction ", also according to Wiki.
Couldn't find any other reliable info on what it really means, if anything in particular.

The Star Fleet Battles game, Starfleet Command video game series and some of the Star Trek technical manual books do refer to these sorts of prefix designations to denote ship types however they aren't canon despite being licensed. That said Federation ships have been referred to by type rather than class in canon, the U.S.S. Enterprise was referred to more than once as a Federation Heavy Cruiser by both the Federation and the Klingons.
As for NCC there is no canon explanation as Ryuken stated it was simply made up. It is not the only canon prefix code for a Federation ship registry though, aside from NX the following have also been seen on screen NAR, NCV, NDT, NFT, NGL and NSP.
