    Does anyone here play any text-based Trek games? I personally spend a lot of my time on Where No One Has Gone Before, which is a MOO that's been around since 98. Since UFP is about Trek gaming, I was wondering if that includes the non-graphic kind Smile

    I would say the differences are the delivery and participation mechanisms. With a simm, you use email, forums, or in our case a special application (Nova) for web-based posting of RP. A simm is also not live in that you add to the story over time as you have free time. The beauty of this style is that you can play whenever you want or whenever you have freetime - a major reason I love PBeM/Simm roleplay.

    If I am correct, a MOO/MUD is a specialized application for "gaming" of sorts (text-based) with rooms and interactivity. Picture Second Life or a normal game, but all in text. If you want to see if anyone else is in the room, you don't look around like in STO/EF, or you don't do a joint post like in simming, but you run a command "look" and it tells you what's in that room. As opposed to a simm/pbem-type game, a MOO/MUD would be "live" in that you login and play, akin to MMORPGs and such.

    If anyone has ever simmed on IRC (a lot of Trek text RP happened on IRC channels) - that would be very similar. Each channel would be setup for live events in which characters would participate. The channel would then have "bots" that could mimic the surroundings, the ship's computer, and NPCs.

    Those are my understandings of the differences.

    And yes, as Admiral Sharpkiller stated, we've started our own simm game in UFP, which has so far opened up with a bang.

    I wasn't trying to supplant the Simm here on UFP, but was rather wondering about the inclusion of it as an activity. As we seem to acknowledge non-Trek games as well.

    I don't think anyone is saying 'No', Kyuusaku. I for one would be interested in hearing more about it, as I have never heard of a MOO or MUSH before. It was more of offering you a current avenue to text-based Star Trek RP which has just been implemented.

    So this MOO/MUSH is kind of a like a text based real-time MMO?

    It is Star Trek related game by the sounds of it. I might suggest opening a Proposal on it -Here-

    This will allow you to lay out your idea in detail (its an easy to fill out form) and then the community here can all weigh in on it. A proposal is taken more seriously as the person initiating/championing it has put more than just a quick thought about it. That is my understanding and belief anyway.

    It's a real-time MMO, basically. We have a lot of visually-impaired players, they claim it's like STO for them, since STO itself is inaccessible for the most part.

    I'll check into a proposal, and see what happens. Thanks for the suggestion. Smile
