With the Aquisition of Cryptic Studios by Perfect World a company whos titles consist solely of free to play games and Cryptics own attempt at a free to play MMO Champions Online speculation has been rife over at the STO forums as to when Star Trek Online will go free to play and what that means for subscribers and lifetimers. Well we now have a rough time for when this change is going to occur. Thanks to a leaked transcript from a recent meeting in which Perfect World Entertainment's CEO, Kelvin Lau, said in a recent earnings call for Q2 2011.
"This is going to be launched by the end of this year as well. So I think free-to-play model we have a bigger potential in US market and also in China market."
There has been lots of discussion of this over on the Star Trek online forums with Dan Stahl answering several questions and making his own thoughts known, speculation is that Star Trek Online will follow the same Free to Play model as Champions online fortunatley for Lifetimers that will mean most new content is free to them and that they will enjoy a healthy stipend of Cryptic points to spend in the C-store so anything that is not free will be easily purchasable. YAHOOOOOOOOOH!!!!! I am a veryt happy man now! All that's keeping me from playing is the subscription fee. I've played since the closed beta until 6 months ago but then RL dealt me a blow in the heart, soul and wallet.
I can't wait to get RA deuZige back out there... If i wasn't allready 100 euro's a month short i still would've been playing!
