Project Severance is a highly classified Starfleet Intelligence operation conceived as a last effort counter-measure to a seemingly unstoppable armada of Borg vessels.
The idea behind the project is to disrupt and sever the subspace link which connects every drone to the hive mind. Starfleet agrees that the only true way to stop the Borg if all else has failed, is to develop a method of disrupting that communications ability either temporarily, or permanently.

PROJECT SEVERANCE SPECIFIC DETAILS: CLASSIFIED

After exhaustive efforts, and over 20 years in development, Starfleet has all but abandoned the project. Having analysed readings collected from vessels engaged with the Borg in the Typhon sector in 2373, as well as readings from both the Enterprise-D and Voyager during their encounters with the Borg; our engineers and scientists were unable to find certain key components which would allow an effective block of the hive link. It was also determined that this would work only work within a relatively small range due to the complexity of the Borg's interlink frequency.
At this time, Project Severance is considered mothballed until further notice.

A report has come in of a transmission to a Starfleet vessel containing high ranking members of Starfleet Command, believed to originate directly from the Borg Queen. Readings have been transmitted and analysed, and its origin confirmed.
Whereas previous readings of the collective's interlink frequency have been scattered and non viable for full analysis, the interlink frequency direct from the Queen herself contains key elements missing from all previous scans.
Project Severance is once again active.

Project Severance has successfully been deployed and modifications conveyed to several vessels and installations within communication range. However unconfirmed reports reveal Borg vessels have self-destructed shortly after coming into contact with the disruption signal, resulting in the loss of all life aboard. At this time we are unsure as to the cause of this, and whether the Borg Queen has had any direct impact on these ship destructions.

Early indications reveal a tactical retreat from most major Starfleet outposts and planetary colonies. We anticipate that the Borg are currently working on a counter-measure and will at some stage, return in force. At this time, only a scattering of Borg signals remain on sensors in and around Federation sectors, and we advise Starfleet Captains to remain at Red Alert.
Further use of Project Severance is to be strictly regulated to minimise the collective's speed and ability to analyse and adapt, and is only to be used as a last resort measure in the gravest of circumstances to Federation security.

Starfleet Command, this is Fleet Admiral Hathaway, your transmission has been received in good order. We can confirm that project Severance was a success aboard our vessel and our immediate surroundings. All Borg drones have been disconnected from the hive mind and are currently undergoing procedures to remove their Borg components. All members of Starfleet Command assigned here are accounted for.
We are in the process of removing the Borg components from our ship, and believe that the incomplete assimilation spared us from the same destructive results experienced by Borg vessels.

We will continue to patrol and deploy vessels to this and surrounding sectors for Borg contacts and report back on our findings.

It was truly a pleasure to see our community jump head first into the unique festivities that were taking place here on the website and forums. We were extremely pleased to see the level of community enthusiasm and involvement in the activities that were offered.

The response to the Borg theme and events has been absolutely phenomenal. We hope you all enjoyed it as much as we enjoyed making it possible. We look forward to continuing to push the envelop when it comes to the Star Trek community and gaming experience.
