Hey guys,
Here's one for you in the IT Crowd. What's the easiest and cheapest solution to keep documents syncronised across machines and platforms. Would prefer it to be automatic.
At home I have a windows desktop, netbook, and ipad, then access to severly firewalled desktop at work.
I have used office live previously, although work is generation behind in software so don't benefit fully from some office 2010 features. Obviously ipad can't use windows software. I have tried dropbox but it's firewalled at work so can't use that.
If possible I would like to have documents syncronised in their file location rather then having to move them to seperate one like dropbox.
I do have a NAS drive that I use for backup, however the Western Digital Software appears bust. Tried unistall-reinstall but doesn't seem to solve the problem. I can access the drive via my computer. I know it's possible to access the NAS via internet but not sure how to set up securely. Mionet supplied with it is also firewalled.
Any solutions?

Dropbox is probably the best for cross-platform support (especially mobile devices). However, if you have a strict firewall at work you may not get many/any of the packages working very well.
I use Live Mesh myself, but it is not cross-platform (which I do not need). It would, presumably, have the same firewall issues you have.
This probably doesn't help much, but just some thoughts.

Can’t use live mesh at work because of Win XP.
Guess looking for the best compromise, rather then having to constantly having to email myself documents.

What kind of documents? Is it a wide array, like Word docs, spreadsheets, PDFs, presentations, images, etc? If it is a certain kind (e.g.: text and images), you could use something like http://www.evernote.com. If you need all the other crap, you may be in between a rock and a hard place.

Might be worth using a VPN connection. You can get free software for it, so long as you have internet at both locations.

Dropbox is the easiest, but it's also the least secure. Check SpiderOak. It supports XP (I use it on my work laptop, which is running SP3), OS X, and iOS. The biggest selling point, for me, is the blind security. Dropbox can see your data, which led to a major security bug earlier this year that allows some users to see other users' data in their dropbox account and in some cases, they were password-free (the no-auth bug).
SpiderOak supports two-factor auth, and the blocks are encrypted, so even they can't see what you're storing.
